I followed the instructions on Barry's blog and installed Quirky 5.99
to an 8gb SDHC card.
VIDEO REPORT: Quirky Puppy, version 5.99

Chip description:
VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI RS880M [Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series]

Requested by /etc/X11/xorg.conf:
Resolution (widthxheight, in pixels): 1024x600

I installed the devx and compiled a few programs, made a pet of
Emelfm2 file manager.

My wireless doesn't work, using the wired connection.

EDIT:
I did another SDHC card install for my lenovo ThinkCentre,
I added a few more programs, geeqie because viewnoir doesn't work,mc,and lxterminal.
Switched to icewm.

hold the phone... did BK just release this? I do not recall v5.99 of quirky. where did you get it?

It's not easy to install if you don't have bootable USB ports.

lol yep true to form, he did take much longer to unretire this time!

notice I never said my good byes he has retired many times before. I wait for his "vacation" notices, That is a sign of creative new ideas.

I trust that Barry knew himself well enough
that if he tell everybody that he had retired
then we would know we should carry on his job

That would free him to only do what comes
spontaneously instead of feeling our demands on him.

Sure I can be wrong but I find that to be very logical.

I agree he has such creative tendencies that must get bogged down by legacy puppylinux. He tried to fix the puppylinux time problem with automatic scripts and using other distros bases I.e. Woof. Then that project took most of his time. Soon as WolfCE came about he made room for play with quirky, and here we are new Quirky. I feel quirky was most like the wild creative stuff from early puppylinux, small, home grown and different take on how linux can be used. I always looked forward to quirky releases.
I'm currently avoiding flash based methods, until my packrat data hording issue is resolved, I hate to delete things and did not know I had a problem until I stopped using dvd multisession with my new laptop that has issues booting ( UEFI ). But using plop as awork around is being investigated.

I am curious. So he has made it as an 8GB image.
Suppose I have a 4GB usb flash mem only
could I not use some extract and do a normal frugal
instal? or on the HD I want to do a normal fruga install
there too.

So it is impossible to get the initrd.gz and vmlinuz
and the sfs file out of the image for 8GB? it is made another way?

Damn I am so confused about OS making. Love that you guys
can make OS it is not easy at all.

It is the Nobel Price Cermony today.
Next year I hope that they give it to

I installed seamonkey-2.22.1-i486-quirky6.pet +
seamonkey_DEV-2.22.1-i486-quirky6.pet from the Quirky 6 directory on
ibiblio.org.
Seamonkey works well although not exactly speedy on this pc, it's
missing a few icons on the opening screen too.

Links 2.8 works well.

I was able to make the nightly build of audacity work in Quirky 6
by adding a link named libjpeg.so.8 to Slacko libraries.

The two pet packages that must be installed are HERE

Warning !!! do not use any version of gparted before version 0.14.0
to manipulate your USB stick. I found that early versions
of gparted will remove boot flag.

To check your version of gparted here's what to do...

Launch gparted and try to change the flags on your device.
If you DO NOT see a 'Legacy boot' option then this version
of gparted should be avoided!!

Quirky 6.0 is coming very soon. Zillions of improvements. I can't say exactly how many more days to fix the final bugs and do more testing -- maybe just a few more.

apart from the Image to USB version
so one can make a frugal install
and not have to use only USB?

I was able to get viewnior to work by looking at
terminal complaints. Two libraries were missing.

libxcb-xlib.so.0
libpcre.so.0

I went to internet to track down these RPMs and installed
and to my surprise I could get Viewnior to work.

RPMs can't be attached so I put fake gz extension on the end.

There is probably a reason why no one has done this before, but, I will ask.

Puppy has a mechanism for pushing updates to the base system out to the community. If this system works, why has few (and I mean a very very few) ever use this approach for system's update?
Why was some other method devise about a year ago for updating a base system?

Help if you can why it appears that "auto system update" announcement and operation(s) is avoided by everyone (excepting one or 2 developers who have ever used this)..

It is one of the goals for Quirky6, easy upgrade, and downgrade. That won't be in the 6.0 release though.

All of those problems (Viewnior, etc.) have been fixed in 6.0.

Quirky6 is not really designed for frugal install. But, install to a hard drive partition, a conventional full installation, is easily doable.

...I just have to write a script for it. The script currently available, 'write-quirky-image-to-drive', writes to the entire drive, with syslinux boot manager. To install to a partition in a hard drive is easy, I just need to write the script -- will do that soon.

By the way, 6.0 will be uploaded in less than 24 hours from now.

When trying to use FFConvert, I received a "Somewhat fault with the ffmpeg... Ensure the ffmpeg is properly installed" error.

The Ogle DVD Player didn't work from menu. - Not sure about terminal.

I'm sure you're way ahead of me on this but I thought it might be good to throw it out there... just in case.

I'm not a huge fan of Opera but it works well, here.

Barry, welcome back!! Overall, I really like this Quirky.
