My report on Quirky 6.0

I installed 6.1.2. I found a small bug. There is a dead button (Desktop background) in JWM Configuration Manager screen. /usr/local/jwmconfig2/jwmConfigMgr calls an action "wallpaper" but "wallpaper" does not exist. I symlinked /usr/sbin/qwallpaper to /usr/sbin/wallpaper to fix it. I suppose it can also be fixed by modifying the jwmConfigMgr script to change "wallpaper" to "qwallpaper".

As a matter of fact, in keeping with the keep-it-simple design principle of puppy, I think we can even get rid of the entire desktop tab in the JWM Configuration Manager screen because both GTK theme and Desktop Background are already found in the main menu under Desktop. Having that in 2 places is not necessary and only creates more codes to maintain and may confuse the user. Just a suggestion.

I installed openbox + lxpanel.
Installed the proprietary drive for my Nvidia card.
Now XBMC runs under wine

Testing 6.1.1

I noticed something unusual - perhaps an unintended mistake
when Barry created the theme

The folder icon is upright when it should be horizontal.
The switcher app shows the correct orientation.
When the folder icon is small in Rox it looks too much like a document
icon. It would be better if the folder icon is lying horizontally
which is common.

How true! I complained above about the be-latin1 keyboard not being recognized and now, several reboots later, it suddenly is activated!

I posted above Firefox from Mozilla is not useable in Quirky 6+. Then I tried several FF-pets from the forum, nothing would run. Then I made two pets myself, based on FF-26.0. No, no running Firefox.
So Quirky definitely is not Puppy

Will we have to learn how to compile the software ourselves? Maybe a good idea...

Meanwhile Seamonkey is not that terrible... I found an add-on that makes the tabs much more acceptable (remember the site tom-cat.com has retired its great Seamonkey stuff..):

I could not see images in Google Search dedicated tab. Only blank rectangles. I download Opera with Quirky Package Manager and now I can see...

But I've deleted everything Google from about:config and replaced the search engine with Startpage.com...

Amazing how Google has crept into every corner of every browser. Until they come up with a very clear statement about their intentions, I trust them as much as I trust the NSA.

I've seen how every automatic browser-update re-installed the same spy-ware again and again, disregarding my choices.

Mozilla should be crowd-funded and never again fall for a big pile of google/nsa dollars.

Thank you, I used your suggestion to edit jwmConfigMgr and it works.

Yes, I compiled it myself, but I don't think it's going to make it into the repo.

Actually, jwm has a better menu system but I still prefer lxpanel + openbox.

612: used the .pet from 611. Default res. too high, drive icons displaced towards centre. Modesetting didn't work on any settings, had to revert to VESA. Sound and connection down, Opera disappeared. Can't see my bog std. NIC/wired connection. No 'go-back' in menu. Had something similar previously when updating. Will wipe entire disc inc. Slacko and re-install. Also screwed GRUB.
Later: Complete wipe + re-install working OK, so far.

This is more about Seamonkey than Quirky6. Does anyone know why this video podcast, one of my favourites, is so laggy under Seamonkey?

I have Chrome browser on my other puppies and it plays fine under Chrome.

The network doesn't autoconnect when booting (I have lan). I must connect manually. Upgraded from 6.1.1 to 6.1.2. and the system survived. I like this way to keep personal data. My system is on cf card in ide adapter to avoid boot problems but I need an usb stick to take portable data because the file system cannot be seen from others operating systems. Maybe a new partition will solve the problem...
