Hi Greengeek,
Re
Just in case this setting is contributing to that problem I recommend you do the following:
click menu, desktop, 'pupx set properties of x', screensaver, and then untick the 'enable screensaver' box. At least that will eliminate one potential cause.
Unticted "Blank the screen rather than display a pattern"
"Allow exposures" ticked
Delay and cycle "600 seconds"

Mouse Wizard
Changed "Enable touchpad tapping for mouse button cliclks" from Unticked to Ticked

Changed properties of "pup X set properties of X"
"Screensaver"
Unticked " Enable screen saver"
"allow Exposures" still ticked

Somehow the screen froze . When I regained control I was given 3 choices about leaving x.
I selected the option for activating x.
System working again

Hi Frerom...

Thank you but I really need what I posted about in my last post. The information you gave doesn't display the chipsets, for some reason. If you would, please follow the instructions word for word (like just typing in "lspci" without the "-v") from my last post and provide the results. Thanks! :)

@mikeb: I thought if we had information about Frerom's hardware, it might help us determine why he is not able to get Puppy to shut down.

Regards...

machine that age might be wanting apm rather than acpi and the former may not be loading if its needed. (or acpi is and acpi=off might help.)

Hi Ardvark,
I thought that there is no difference between the 2 expressions. If I don't use the -v,. I get one output per tab. If I use the -v I get the whole string of outputs in one shot. I'll check it out and if it's different I'll repost.
Good night

Hi...

No, there are differences. The "-v" suffix refers to "verbose," which tells the program to add more detail (about the hardware devices) to the results than just the plain command. Not sure why there would be differences in how the output is shown, though. :?:

Hi frerom...

Thanks for trying but I really need the chipset information. I have no clue as to why yours is displaying the information in that manner.

This is an example of what the results should look like. This is from my system...

Hi Frerom and others helping out here...

I just found this thread...a user (SilvioTO) has an almost identical set of hardware....

Ok, the first entry...00:00.0 Class 0600: 1106:0501 (rev 04) is the "("VT8501 [Apollo MVP4]"), class: 06 ("Bridge"), subclass: 00 ("Host bridge"), prog-if: 00" according to here.

So it looks like everything starting with "1106" is from VIA Technologies. I'll post back when I can track down some more...

Frerom, by any chance is the "make and model" number of your laptop "Pavilion N3330"? Please see here. It looks like the specs are almost the same, if not identical.

Here is your readout...

"00:00.0 Class 0600: 1106:0501 (rev 04)

02:00.0 Class 0200: 1186:1340 (rev 10)"

And here is Guy's (from the page I just linked to...)

Hi Ardvark,
I backed up and went thru the posts.
I believe the problem started afterI I loaded pup-394 and tried pup-431.
Refer to my post Tue 14 Jan 2014, 11:37 on p3.
I also created some partitions at that time.
My Idea is that although Win ME still works OK there may be some change that is affecting shutdown. Both 394 and 431 work OK on my desktop With win XP.
So I will be doing a full install of pup-431 and see what happens.
From what I read. I should change the SDA1 (1GiB)to a ext 2 or 3 with a boot flag ( Should I go with EXT 3?) SDA2 Remains Fat32. SDA3 (Should I keep a Swap partition?) SDA4 (Fat32)
Regards

Hi Frerom...

I think mikeb also has a good idea, it would be worth checking into first...
mikeb wrote:machine that age might be wanting apm rather than acpi and the former may not be loading if its needed. (or acpi is and acpi=off might help.)
I was able to find these programs in the Puppy Package Manager. Also, was I correct on your laptop's model name and number?

@mikeb: will apm start working right away or do you think Frerom will need to make some configuration changes? If so, how would he do this?

well modprobe apm takes immedeate effect.... tis only a possibility but checking dmesg will show if acpi is being used.

On one of these compaqs for example I need apm=force for slax for happy shutdown...and some older pups did not get apm loaded when they needed to.

Hi Ardvark,
Laptop is "Pavilion N3478 in lieu of N3330"?
They both use the same user guides.
Should I try changing ACPI in BIOS?
I read the latest notes for both.
N3330 - talks about Power Management (speeding up processor)
N3478 - Doesn't talk about that but talks about dual monitors)

Hi Mikeb,
Re
for example I need apm=force for slax for happy shutdown
When I check the system devices with Win ME thru control panel
the settings for APM Version 2 are unticked.
1.-Selected force APM 1 mode. Have to restart to take effect.
But the APM is disabled when restarted.
Tried puppy pfix=ram before and after restart with win ME
2.-Disabled power status polling.
Tried puppy pfix=ram before and after restart with win ME
Power Now setting changed from Automatic to high performance.
Tried puppy pfix=ram before and after restart with win ME
Always ends with
Session not saved
System halted.

Note: 2 drivers are listed but 1 (VMM32.VXD (VPOWERD.vxd)
The other is POWER.DRV microsoft version 4.90.3000
Both are supposed to be located in Windows\System\

If ME is shutting down and not using APM that suggests APM is not needed.

There may still be other kernel parameter possibilities for failing to poweroff though, or the linux acpi support does not get on with that machine.

I'm trying to install puppy Frugal) (to hard drivre).
1.-Do I have to install a Grub Pet or is it in puppy 4.3.1?
2.-If saving to a .ext3, does the save file have to be a .ext3?

All I see on the System menu is
Grub Bootloader configure and
Bootmanager configure bootup

Selected Menu/setup/Puppy Universal installer/internal IDE/SDA1(this is a.ext3)
That installs the files in a folder puppy431 in the SDA1 partition.
I'm lost on what to do next.
Thanks

frerom wrote:1.-Do I have to install a Grub Pet or is it in puppy 4.3.1?
One version of Grub is already present in 431. That is the version I always use. There are other versions too. Grub4Dos is often used when you want puppy to co-exist with Windows (I don't feel competent to offer advice on how best to get Windows and Puppy to co-exist - I generally use the whole drive for puppy frugal only)
2.-If saving to a .ext3, does the save file have to be a .ext3?
No. The version of savefile is determined by the actual puppy itself, not by the filesystem format.
All I see on the System menu is Grub Bootloader configure and Bootmanager configure bootup
Grub bootloader is the one you want. Bootmanager is used later for different purposes.

At the risk of exposing your Windows install to potential damage (just because I use a totally different method for getting them to coexist) I think this is what you want to do:
1) Install the files in a folder puppy431 in the SDAx partition.(where x is the partition you have chosen for puppy)

EDIT : I think you mentioned sda1, but that seems wrong to me. Your partition pic suggests that sda1 is full of the stuff your laptop uses to boot (and probably maintain the integrity of) Windows. If your partitions are still as shown in that pic I would probably suggest loading 431 to sda4 - unless you have made a decision to scrub windows and allocate the whole drive to puppy - (which doesn't sound like what you are aiming for yet...)

2) After loading the puppy files to the frugal folder you will be wanting to run the grub routine which will add the bootloader to the drive. Then check that the 431 boot stanza in menu.lst points to the correct partition where the 431 folder is.
- what I'm not clear on is how to make the grub recognise the windows too.... (use caution here and be clear about what you want the final outcome to be, as there is a risk of losing access to windows if you change boot flags and bootloaders etc)

If there are any doubts about how to make grub correctly recognise Windows too then I would recommend using Grub4dos as I know that is great at finding windows installs and linking to them - I just am not sure how to get grub4dos onto 431 - I'm pretty sure its not on the CD.

Also - I don't think you can have more than one partition with the Boot flag set - so you need some clear advice about how / where to get the grub bootloader to sit.

Hi frerom - sorry if my posts are not helping much - it's just that setting up boot loaders and dualboot / multiboot parameters can range from being very easy to quite complex (it is all so much easier if the whole drive is dedicated to puppy - not that this is necessary...) and I am trying to help prevent you losing access to your windows install. It is hard for someone sitting at a distance (and not in front of your machine) to be clear about the easiest way for you to preserve your Windows installation alongside your new puppy frugal - however, I have been doing a bit of searching through the forum and have found some posts that I think confirm that using Grub4Dos may be the best way to go (bearing in mind that grub4dos is actually a bad name for it as it is really nothing to do with Dos...)

This will take a bit of reading (and there is a lot of info that can just be discarded as irrelevant to your situation) but I just wanted to make sure you had an idea of the fact that there are multiple methods available to set up dual boot, and taking a wrong step could cost you your Windows setup.

Anyway, here are some links that I think offer some confidence in grub4dos as a good way forward (although there is quite a bit of reading in the rest of the threads linked to):
(there are lots of comments about Grub2 but I think they are irrelevant for you - I think it is the chainloading ability of grub4dos that you most need for your system)

Hope I'm not just adding confusion here - I'm just trying to help provide the big picture so you can choose the desired outcome...

Anyway, for me the question is how to get grub4dos active on your machine? I think it would be necessary to use a Live CD of a newer puppy and run grub4dos from the menu of that Live CD. (menu, system, grub4dos)
