My report on Quirky 6.0
Quirky Tahr first impressions. I get the wanted 1360x768 resolution, which Quirky 6.0 - 6.1.X didnt give and neither Slacko64. HDMI output to LCD TV works. Both audio and video using intel graphics. I had to remove nouveau.ko because it is still broken in 3.12.6 kernel. Suspending and waking up freezes totally. That is same problem with all 3.12.X kernels with my nvida optimus - intel dual graphics laptop.
After removing nouveau.ko my dual graphics uses only intel and all is good.
Gimp, Qbittorrent, Google-chrome, Thunderbird, Smplayer ( with Mplayer2 ) all works fine.
Thanks...

Any font sizes set withing Qupzilla preferences seem to get ignored by web pages. I therefore installed Firefox 25 build3 via the package manager without issue.
I also installed the latest Libreoffice 4.2 (issued today) using the DEBS from the main Libreoffice site.
To install this use dpkg -i --force-depends *.deb
You will get errors relating to a missing dpkg folder under /var. Similar for the file status and the directory info. Simply create these manually when you see the error messages in the terminal. You can access the binaries under /opt in order to run Libreoffice.
This would be easier if supplied as a PET or DEB package. if I can find the time I'll get this organised.

It's a lot of work for Barry to make a repository since all the apps3. The "pet-tahr" repo in the Quirky Package Manager is not yet working
in the Ubuntu Tahr repository have to be carefully copied to a new
database.

Yes, of course, Don. So why is there a tahr repo prominently listed and shown as default?! There is/was not enough explanation, maybe, as BK himself admits. Yes, it's a lot of work. The biggest problem I am facing is that a large cache of putative users and recruits are frightened witless by confronting a CLI installation of an .img file. This is a fast ,compact GUI-based offering, it deserves an .iso whether or not BK is inclined to provide it or not, despite the technical objections. We all have to work with folk the way they are not the way we would like. The devil's OS has expended $tn on providing pretty pictures, clickety-clicking, & co. to get a receptive market. IT education alone is unlikely to offer an answer either now or in the longer term because it remains the fastest moving technology. Goodness knows where next. A couple of years ago it would've been a cause for intense mirth to suggest that these machines could be operated by shouting, winking or even thinking commands - now everyone is doing it. What next?!It's a lot of work for Barry to make a repository since all the apps
in the Ubuntu Tahr repository have to be carefully copied to a new
database.

On DW BK talks about a live cd ??

This is a small and experimental live CD which, unlike the the original Quirky 6.0 released last month, is binary compatible with "Trusty Tahr", Ubuntu's current development tree. From the
But on ibiblio I do not see it.
Could anyone give me the link to this LIVECD ?
(which might make installing much easier for noobs like me).

I added xfce4 with PPM, it's not working 100% yet but it's useable, fun playing with it anyways

Quirky Tahr feedback
1. needs "rfkill unblock wlan" just like Precise5.7.1 to activate my Broadcom wifi
2. was able to compile the Broadcom STA wl.ko driver - however loading the kernel sources caused some problems - I downloaded the sfs mentioned on BK's blog and converted it to a pet - however this took a long, long, long time to install
3. running the First-run settings manually from the menu caused my selected background to revert to the default
Cheers

For those looking to take advantage of the pets available on Tahr, I downloaded and successfully ran PDF Shuffler in Tahr with no problems. I personally have been waiting forever to successfully run PDF Shuffler in Puppy, so I have to send a hoorah!! There are issues with some of the built-in items like FFConvert but it was nice to see the package manager doing such a nice job on the Ubuntu packages. Thanks Barry!
P.S. - For those that haven't seen, the new Quirky (Non-Tahr) has an upgrade to 6.1.4 in the Version Upgrade Manager. I haven't seen an official posting from Barry on this so it might still be in the testing stages before an official announcement. To play it safe, I made a new install of 6.1.3 on a different USB and then upgraded. No serious issues with 6.1.4 so far that I can see.
Best,
Slavvo67

No, "pet-tahr" is just a collection of PET packages that have been compiled in Quirky Tahr, or that we want for Quirky Tahr and not available elsewhere.don570 wrote:Acccording to Barry's BlogSage wrote: Had some problems with PPM. Quirky Tahr is empty, only Ubuntu ones seem to load?

You can see online what is in there:

Not much. Evince is a multiprotocol chat client, already included in the Quirky Tahr build.
EDIT:
Sorry, I got them mixed up, Evince is a PDF viewer.
The multiprotocol chat client is qutIM.
