My report on Quirky 6.0

I tried libre office pet in quirky 6.1.4 (upgraded several times with services packs) but do not start. Perhaps quirky tahr has more libraries...

try restarting the JWM window manager from the shutdown menu item.

All the necessary Libreoffice libraries are there under the /opt folder. This is in effect a portable version of this suite and should run in any Linux.

If it still won't start, wait for the next Quirky Tahr service pack and we'll take it from there.

JFYI - Quirky Tahr works very well on my EeePc 701SD netbook, using it now.

Just took the usb stick that was previously used with the E732 laptop and booted it on the 701SD, had to use xorgwizard to reset the screen and then setup the wifi with frisbee.

Working very well.

Acpi suspend / resume would be handy - but Quirky boots so fast - so not a major issue.

But... NOT using Menu > Multimedia > VLC media player

I re-booted and still the same error message.

It is also necessary to edit line 217 in /root/.jwmrc
<Program label="VLC media player" icon="vlc.png">/usr/bin/vlc</Program>
Then re-boot and the menu method works.

Is there another way to sync the two?

Does Quirky not have fixmenus?
Normally you would have to run that, followed by jwm -reload (or restart jwm or restart X) after editing the *.desktop file

I am no expert on this, but I believe it has to run when programs are installed or removed so it will be called by the likes of petget and the sfs loader scripts. If you were to run one of those after your manual edit the menu would then include your changes, but rebooting does not run fixmenus. It has caught me out a few times that I have made changes and then for a few moments I wondered why my menu didn't work as expected.

I installed opera from qpm (pet common) in quirky 6.1.4 and it appeared a list of some libraries missing and the message that there are no dependencies missing. Opera works fine. Is it a conflict?

tahr 6.0.1 working very well. feels about as fast on an old usb stick as precise does on a HD...

When installing a printer in Tahr 6.0 and 6.0.1, CUPS does not work.
The http://localhost:631 is shown in the browser, but the submenus Administration, Classes, Jobs, Printers,...
result in 'not found' when clicked.

My impression is that cups in Tahr is not complete. In fact, I have compiled cups-1.7.1 from source with the option:
./configure --disable-gssapi
and installed my HP printers (previous installation of hpliplite and its libnetsnmp-15 dependency).
Still the printer did not work, lacking filters.

Finally, I installed from PPM cups-filters_1.0.43-1, which complained about missing libfontembed1 and fonts-freefont-ttf libraries,
which I could obtain thanks to the "more info" button offered by PPM.

All in all, my printers finally work flawlessly in Tahr.

Before releasing Tahr 6.0, I tested my printer, scanner and camera, all worked.

However, what seemed like a harmless "improvement" to the cups template in the Quirky build system has broken printing in 6.0.1.

Printing is fixed again in 6.0.2.

- Is it normal when opening VLC media player to have an error box:
File reading failed:
VLC could not open the file "/root/%U" (No such file or directory).
Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'file:///root/%25U'. Check the log for details.

That is a bug in /usr/share/applications/vlc.desktop
The fix will be in 6.0.2

Manually, you can fix it now by changing the line in vlc.desktop to just this:

Exec=vlc

Yes, run 'fixmenus' in a terminal.

There is a bug in the Service Pack, the pinstall.sh (post-install script) is supposed to have
rm -rf /home
instead it only has:
rm -f /home
I found the cause of the bug, and the next Service Pack will delete /home. Or you can do it manually now.
Luckily for me I actually had perused the tahr-6.0.1-README so had removed it manually

Don't usually bother with manual code adjustments but had a few mo s free today. Used Pfind and then Search but could not find the offending line in either occurrence in /usr/share...etc when opened as text.
Irksome it might be but full path citation is always more rigorous; all sorts of old f*rts visit this Forum as well as BK's blog!

Start ROX-Filer by clicking "file" icon at top-left of screen.
Click the "up arrow" icon.
You will see the "home" folder, right-click on it, choose "Rename...",
rename it to "file".

No, it just means that Opera will not be able to play HTML5 video. SeaMonkey and Firefox have the same fall-back.

If they can't play HTML5 video, at youtube.com for example, they will fallback to using the Adobe Flash player, if it is installed.

Note, the gstreamer libs are in Quirky Tahr.

When I installed the 6.0.1 Service Pack, to upgrade my Tahr 6.0 HD installation, I found that the wallpaper was no longer reshaped to suit my widescreen.

Fixed for 6.0.2.

I booted it and tested that printing works.

There are more changes in the pipeline, so 6.0.3 is not far away.

I have SeaMonkey download to /root/Downloads
but 'Open Containing Folder' has never worked.

Will report any gremlins if they present themselves.

Just a heads up for tinkerers.
Service pack 6.1.3 to 6.1.4 will change your /boot/vmlinuz.
So if you have changed your kernel the installation may crash for good and should be repaired in another machine (audit is handy in this case )
BTW, it looks like is the same kernel. Why the update then?
