Which Puppy to run on the Asus Chromebox?
Hi.
Do we have a Puppy that runs or will run on the Asus Chromebox?
http://promos.asus.com/us/chrome-os/chromebox
Apparenly, you can run other OS's than ChromeOS on this box, such as Ubuntu?
What was your experience? Some commentators have said that this computer was
"wimpy", as compared to Intel's NUC.
http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ ... rview.html
I'm considering a purchase, but I'm unsure yet. Are these boxes throw-away, like
the BIC pen of computing, with no possibility of expansion, meaning: if you need to
upgrade, you have to dump it and buy the next one?
Thanks in advance and best regards.

Hello, people.
I initially thought that the ASUS Chromebox ran on an ARM processor. Further
reading reveals that it relies rather on an Intel celeron processor
https://ixquick.com/do/search?q=asus+ch ... +processor,
so pretty much any Puppy will do, if you wipe the ChromeOS first, if I
understand correctly.
Or you can try to find a Puppy with a Linux kernel similar to the ChromeOS and
use the "crouton" utility. (Or must it be an identical kernel? )

To be cont'd. BFN.

An article I read a while ago about dual booting chromebox with ubuntu, may be of some assistance to you:

ebox
A ha ha ha, it looks like the ebox circa 2006 has a second life.
See http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?mode=attach&id=5735
ebox came from Taiwan, which is also the home of Asus.
There are threads in the forum that discussed the original ebox (x86, 32-bit), start here:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=13722
The old 2.02R ISO is still there:
http://www.eminima.org/pup/minipup2.02R-Mar08_2007.iso
Anyway, the new forms are the more powerful but energy-efficient designs of x86 PCs. But the small form-factor enables its attachment to the back of a flat monitor.

kernel
Am afraid you will need the pups with the new kernel, even Quirky6+. (I posted the URL of the old ISO only for old times sake. )

I just bought an ASUS Chromebox (Celeron model) at a discount at canadacomputers.com for CDN $179. I would like to be able run puppy from USB/SDcard without wiping the factory installed ChromeOS. I found this link: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=194362 and will try it and report back. I think I'll just need it to set it to legacy boot. If it can boot Ubuntu, it should also be able to boot puppy with the correct grub.cfg or syslinux.cfg settings.

I have successfully booted puppylinux on Asus Chromebox (Celeron model) via USB stick or SD card:
1. Put Chromebox in developer mode
http://dak1n1.com/blog/20-asus-chromebo ... 20-install
2. In ChromeOS, press Ctrl-Alt-F2 to open terminal, login as chronos (no password required)
4. Apply SeaBIOS legacy boot fix. See http://johnlewis.ie/asus-chromebox-owners-rejoice/
5. Execute commands to allow usb and legacy boot:
sudo crossystem dev_boot_usb=1
sudo crossystem dev_boot_legacy=1
6. Next time you boot, press Ctrl-L, then Esc to see boot menu
I was using Puppy Precise 5.7.1. The sound does not work. It will need some work to figure that out.
Update Jun 30, 2014: Sound does work. You'll will need to set the sound card to Intel HDA and use alsamixer to control volume. I think the default goes to HDMI audio. I was also able to boot Quirky Tahr 6.0.5 on the Chromebox. Puppy runs equally well on the Chromebox as ChromeOS.

Hello, puppyists!
I finally set aside the idea of getting myself a ChromeBox, because it seemed that a
portable computer would suit my needs better.
The ChromeBooks having gone up in price since the opening of this thread, I finally
decided to buy a 2nd-hand compaq 6715b, and installed pemasu's raringPup-3.992 on it :
it leaves everything else in the dust!

Well there are ChromeBooks for US$200 in the USA if you go shopping.
Screen size is 11.6" 1280x720/768
Notes here that Exynos 5 chips (ARM Cortex A15 or octo-cores) are in some of these (not 4 puppy), but other notable chips are Intel 64-bit ULP such as Celeron N2830/2955U, and even a few Atom N2830's. I did not see the newer E-series Atoms in a Chromebook yet.
Editted: wrong ARM series
