Slacko 5.7 cannot connect to WLAN

Hi,
I just started up my laptop with Slacko 5.7 No Pae. When looking for a connection with the WLAN, which normally worked with Precise Puppy before, there was no connection possible.
I tried the three wizards in this case.

Hope somebody can help me.

It's possible the non-PAE version does not have the driver for your wireless adapter. Please open a terminal and post the output for...

Thank you for your reply to my question.

I have checked the PAE version, however the reply I received is that the kernel the required feature like pae is not present.

Regarding your first suggestion by using the command lspci -nnk on the terminal I must confess that I do not know how I get the result onto this message. There is no copy/print possible.
Please tell me what to do with that info.

Showing the screenshot is fine but I need you to enter the command exactly as it is shown, including the dash, and post the results....

lspci -nnk

I displayed it normally instead of using the code tag so it might be easier to read. There is a terminal emulator called "Sakura" that makes copying and pasting a whole lot easier. It's available in the package manager. :)

Also, did you mean you couldn't use the PAE version because there was hardware required that your system doesn't have. Could you show the exact error message?

To output the results to a text file in /root called output.txt, try this:
lspci -nnk > /root/output.txt

Regarding the PAE-version I tried to install I like to note that that version was not possible for my laptop to be installed so I installed the non-PAE version.

Regarding the lspci -nnk command, I like to note that I have put the outcome in the attachment.

Hi...

Well, your readout is showing that your wireless adapter is recognized and a driver (rt61pci) loaded for it. Whether that driver is working correctly, I don't know. It could be that or something else. Image

It appears the firmware for your adapter is either missing or the OS is unable to access it for some reason. That is why you are unable to establish a connection. Could you look in the /lib/firmware folder to ascertain whether the file(s) are there?

Also, do you have a USB wireless adapter plugged in as well?

Whoa. Don't make the issue of missing firmware so overcomplicated.
Puppy has an extensive collection of firmware for the drivers (kernel modules) which require it, but this firmware is stored in a deliberately non-standard location.
If you look in /lib/modules/all-firmware/rt2x00/lib/firmware
you will almost certainly see the correct firmware file(s). It's just a question of whether Puppy has an appropriate symbolic link to this firmware from the correct location - /lib/firmware

So you need to have symbolic link - /lib/firmware/rt2561.bin

Yes I have the WLAN adapter connected, hoping it would solve the problem, but I will disconnect it now.
I have found the folder /lib/firmware in my system.
Does it mean that I have to install your suggested firmwarefiles and how do I have to install these ???

I will assume that you see nothing in /lib/firmware which looks like the correct firmware.
To fix the problem, I suggest not to create a symbolic link - because this is simply imitating Puppy's existing method of firmware location/handling - but IMO it was never a good idea in the first place, as your current problem demonstrates.

I suggest you open a ROX window and navigate to /lib/modules/all-firmware/rt2x00/lib/firmware/
Next open a second ROX window and navigate to /lib/firmware/

Now just move (by dragging) all of the firmware files into the second ROX window.
Then reboot.

I was having trouble connecting to a windows share .
I had turned off samba (I'm not sure how??? fooling about I guess)
I had used samba tng successfully in past.

I re-read the instructions for Samba-tng and noticed that there was a
tip to type 'ps' in terminal to check if samba was running.

I noticed that it wasn't running, so I typed 'samba-start' in terminal.

Then I ran the pnethood app. I noticed the network was connected
and the Share folder was listed and it was easy to connect again.

don570, just so we're all on the same page, here;
petine's Ralink wifi adapter is failing to establish a connection to the wifi router, which is the very first link in a network chain.
Connectivity with other network peers is not at stake, not at this stage anyway.

But why is that? In this case, it caused the OP's adapter not to work, so wouldn't this be considered a mistake which needs to be corrected in all affected Puppies? :!:

FWIW, I set up a machine with Slacko 5.7-NO-PAE with a PCI WiFi card that uses the rt2800pci driver and the firmware file rt2860.bin.

It failed to setup WiFi with the same firmware load error as above. So I deleted the symlink /lib/firmware/rt2860.bin and copied in the actual file. Then it worked.

I then looked at Slacko 5.6-4G. It appears to handle firmware by copying the actual files from /lib/modules/all-firmware instead of using symlinks. It installed the rt2800pci driver correctly.

I then checked Slacko 593. It works like Slacko56.
