Just to say...
The original Acer Aspire One netbook came with a really easy to use version of Linux that I thought would be ideal for my mum as she is not at all computer literate.
However, frustration had grown because it could not handle a modern browser - and browsing is her main activity. Even Gmail would no longer work properly because the browser was so out of date. It had a really ancient version of Firefox on it and came with a warning that the underlying system relied upon the library components of Firefox and hence it could not be readily upgraded without risking the integrity of the system. Despite many attempts I finally gave up trying to install Chrome.
So yesterday I did a search for an entire replacement o/s and chose Puppy.
So far I'm very impressed with Puppy and how friendly it is to set up and to use. I particularly like the way in which advice is given about every configuration option.
However, Gmail still says that Firefox and Chrome installed through the Puppy PET installation mechanisms are out of date and no longer supported.
I can install the latest Chrome but it doesn't run. I've found the advice about how Chrome doesn't want to be run as Administrator and how to get around that but it doesn't work. Anyway, I have more detail about that and will possibly mention that in another thread.
The purpose of this thread is to say how well Puppy works on the Acer Aspire One and I'm very happy to have found it.

SteveM
How do I run Chrome as root?
lol good news. I had one XP version Acer One I was going to trade in for a 100 off new laptop ( Best Buy didn't say it had to be Microsoft, so people where getting a chromebook to run puppylinux on..) But battery life was about 3 minutes with harddrive active. 5mins without. So I used puppylinux quirky from series 4 that had the best suspend mode ( weeks ) had it ready to open lid and show it worked, had to still run from battery to qualify. The harddrive was wiped I figured it would just be thrown out or recycled any way.
If you want my customized long battery version let me know via PM. It comes with my remaster scripts so you can update.

Re: Acer Aspire One - Puppy
Install the most recent version of FireFox pet you can find, (#12?,#16? , #23?) , then update that version of FireFox to the most recent (#33?) via the help menu in FireFox : "Help" Menu, "about Firefox" , "check for updates".SteveM wrote:...
