Rescue Dog

#1 Post by nubc »

New (proposed) Puppy derivative: Rescue Dog
icon: Saint Bernard with collar barrel/cask
alternative icon: chihuahua with collar barrel/cask
based on Wary 5.x (64-bit?)
apps: Hardinfo, GParted, PhotoRec,TestDisk, MemTest, NTFS password reset, ddrescue

Please suggest rescue/recovery apps!
Although in legend casks of liquor were strapped around the dogs' collars to warm up travelers, no historical records exist that document this practice. But another legend was very real: famous St. Bernard, Barry, who lived in the monastery from 1800-1812, saved the lives of more than 40 people. In 1815, Barry's body was put on exhibit at the Natural History Museum in Berne, Switzerland, where it remains today.

Many people began breeding the dogs indiscriminately, like with English Mastiffs, which resulted in their common appearance today. During this time, the dog breed was still without a name. Many called them Hospice Dogs, Alpine Mastiffs, Mountain Dogs, Swiss Alpine Dogs and St. Bernard Mastiffs. Many Swiss called them Barry Dogs as a tribute.

Resources to check:
Hiren's Boot Disk
System Rescue CD
Knoppix
Slax
Trinity Rescue Kit
Ultimate Boot CD
Avira Rescue CD (Avira Registry Editor)

My conception of Rescue Dog is that it provides the most commonly needed tools for rescue and recovery, preferably in a gui environment rather than CLI-based. Rescue Dog needn't be as replete as Hiren's BD or Knoppix, but it should have enough rescue tools to attract motivated users to download Puppy. What sets Rescue Dog apart from others is fundamentally the same as what sets Puppy apart: quick boot time, install to RAM, easy gui interface (JWM), full access and permissions as root, etc.

Over at the PC-Guide Forums...
I've recently been suggesting to people that they use with Puppy:
TestDisk
avast4workstation-1.0.8.pet [I have the file, cannot find a hosting site]
Registry Editor PE
Anyone know how to use this to set the Administrator password? It was blank and couldn't be set. set it in XP Safe Mode.

Please provide links to this derivative. Are these projects still active, or were they one-off? Is dpup5520 still active on the forum?

Only 3 pages so not a lot of interest it seems in a rescue dog it would seem.
A iso I keep for 1 click mbr (windoiws or Linux) repair
Works better than Hirens (I have that iso also)

also download a dedicated Boot Repair live CD.

There are programs specifically to deal with rootkits , e.g. ...

Here's another resource: 4MLinux 10.1 Rescue edition BETA
http://sourceforge.net/projects/linux4m/
The main features in this release are antivirus protection (Clam AntiVirus 0.98.4), system backup (4MLinux Backup Scripts 10.1), data recovery (GNU ddrescue 1.19, TestDisk 6.14 with QPhotoRec), data wiping (shred 8.23, nwipe 0.16), disk partitioning (cfdisk 2.25.1, cgdisk 0.8.10, GNU Parted 3.2), and partition imaging (Partimage 0.6.9, Partclone 0.2.70). Many archive formats can be managed via 7-Zip 9.22, FreeArc 0.67, and PeaZip 5.5.0. File managers (Midnight Commander 4.8.13, X File Explorer 1.37, muCommander 0.9.0), CD/DVD burners (cdw 0.8.0, InfraRecorder 0.53), and UNetbootin 608 are also included.

Now get avast4workstation-1.0.8.pet at...

md5sum = 46c21dc2fad103a70697ba6dc2015fbb avast4workstation-1.0.8.pet
Thanks to perdido for hosting this PET file.
This is an on-demand virus scanner that works in Puppy Linux.
I like the way this works.

Register here for your FREE Avast 1-year license.

To eliminate the problem that happens when you attempt to update the Avast database [failure to update].
Add the following line of code: /sbin/sysctl -w kernel/shmmax=130000000
...To the file: /etc/rc.d/rc.local

Hey there guys, sorry I haven't been active in a long time but i've been busy with work and my wife and daughter.
nubc as you can see from the apps lists that you yourself showed from PupRescue 2.5 and Precise both of those derivatives can do what you are looking for and far far more.
As for ClamAV a lot was improved since 2008, I've had very good results with it and rarely run into false positives, but yes it is very slow. The reason I didn't use Avast on the newer versions of PupRescue like the older versions is because Avast's licensing restrictions suck and because of the single user license every time you boot from ram you'd have to reenter the license, and then restart X to run the Avast fix after the license is put in, a huge pain.
Chkrootkit and RKhunter were not included specifically because they both ALWAYS show false positives in Puppy otherwise yes they are very good RK programs.
I am starting to gather updated source codes to start working on an updated PupRescue again but I still use PupRescue Precise daily in my side business and it hasn't failed me yet.

Just a thought, but perhaps if you gave your project a consistent, understandable (to the tech community) name, eg RescueDog, with variations based on the same name, this Puppy derivative might generate a bit of interest on DistroWatch, and bring some computer technicians (potiential new LXers) to this site. At least, it might be announced on DistroWatch. At present, it's not a distro recognized by DW.

There is a possible confusion in a name containing the word Rescue. Rescue can refer to a canine which has been saved from certain death at the local Dog Pound. In that context, I would say that RescueDog is somewhat more likely to be interpreted as the famous St Bernard helper, as opposed to RescuePup which tends to be the helpless Dog Pound refugee. If you use RescueDog along with the well-known Saint Bernard icon, this title would be more readily understandable to people who are not entirely familiar with Puppy Linux.
