I have been obsessed with the issue of reconnection by the 8188eu driver after a reboot. From wboz's pdiag file I see that the driver registers itself not as 8188eu, but r8188eu and that SNS expects a module to register its true name, so does not detect it! I am assuming this is done during bootup, so could be a factor in the issue.

There appear to be at least 2 ways to correct the problem:
- Add a check in the sns script to correct the name when needed -- this has been done for one other module, so is not out of the question.
- Modify the source code to edit in two places the text, r8188eu, to remove the "r" and rebuild.

I have done both but am providing only one at a time in the order of my preferred solutions. The modified/patched "lupu" (and lupusuper2) version of the driver can be downloaded from here:

Since I do not have the hardware for testing, I need those of you with the TP-Link hardware to try it as an experiment. I expect that the /var/log/messages log should contain a line about a module being registered as 8188eu and not r8188eu. Maybe then the reconnection will occur upon reboot. At least that would be one obstacle removed from the mix.

BTW, Although the source code for the tahrpup version of that driver is identical to that used for lupu, the module gets built as r8188eu, getting things back in sync. I tried going that route, but could not compile it due to a makefile issue that I cannot resolve. So I synchronized the naming by going the other way, keeping the 8188eu name.

Please report whether it works, so I can add the solution to 5.2.8.7. And someone please send me a pdiag file taken when running with the patch, so I can see what happens. Thanks.

Oh, yes, I have been meaning to request that someone try the driver with the network wizard and with frisbee, because they handle bootups differently from SNS, which is what wboz used for the pdiag he sent me.

So, if I am currently running lupu 5.2.8.7 with the successfully operating driver but not persistence across reboots, I can help you test right? Is all I need to do download the pet, do I need to run it and if so how (unless it autoruns upon click), and do I need to do anything else on top of that before the "fix" is in place?

Happy to help. It does not seem like this will break anything. Which of the two approaches did you take, btw?

Thanks for your offer to help. I took the option to rebuild the module so that it registers with the actual name of the module. All you need do is download the pet, click on it and allow it to be installed (when prompted). Then reboot to see if there is any improvement in getting it connected automatically. The pet will replace the module itself. Uninstalling the pet will restore the original version of the module, if it comes to that. Whatever happens. please get a pdiag file for me.

Success! This worked.

I installed the patch and restarted the computer. The nonfunctioning profile was still listed and it had not connected, but the wlan0 option with module 8188eu had some additional information listed that was not present before. I had the idea that I might need to select it again before the patch would take (keeping in mind that when the patch was applied, the computer had already been connected to the network).

That worked. Next reboot after selecting wlan0, connected automatically! So thank you, now my problem has been solved so I get a little benefit. I took a pdiag both after the first restart, and after the successful second; I have PMed you the second because it seems more useful.

I'll try restarting once more but I don't expect issues. Thanks!

All riight! Thanks for your help, your contribution to the improvement of Lucid and possibly Precise. This solves that problem for everyone who has the TP-Link and similar dongles. I will make a version for lupusuper2 and, probably, for Precise retro, which does not now even have that driver. (Not sure about the standard Precise, but I can check on it.)

That takes care of the last of my list of things to add to 5.2.8.7. The other newest fix is the addition of the "download only" button to the PPM, but not the selection of location. Does anyone have a further suggestion for a safe addition to 5.2.8.7? I do not expect to update 5.2.8.7 for at least 6 months, maybe a year. So, please speak up now.

What is the difference Lupusuper and regular Lupu? I must admit I had trouble following it in the first post, beyond "super is more likely to run on a range of newer hardware" which seemed a desirable characteristic when I need to boot another computer in a pinch.

Beyond that, all of the lupusupers support "xz" compression, which is used for SFS files built for recent puppies. Those are the only two benefits, but important if you need them. (BTW, I have not received the pdiag file you sent me after your success.)

I considered the save folders but decided that I do not want to add that new capability to lupu, especially considering that it was upgraded repeatedly recently. I want to avoid last-minute fixes in case it still needs work to be sure there are no unintended consequences.

Remember, the main reason to maintain lupu is so that those of us who need nothing more can keep up with current versions of things without competing with newer pups.

After improving the 8188eu driver (thanks to the reporting and testing by wboz) and seeing no other reports of any problems, I have begun the uploads of the many variants of Lucid Pup 5.2.8.7. Initially, only the lupu and lupusuper2 groups are in place. I will add 3HD and supers 1,3 & 4 soon, at which point I will update the main posting.

I'm sorry I failed to send the pdiag. I sometimes select a file to attach and think it's done, but really I need to additionally click 'confirm' or something ... often confuses me. I do still have the pdiag output and will send when I boot the machine (i'm not on it now or I would do it now). Looks like you don't really need it probably but still I will send

Really interesting to see the counts ... pretty well distributed actually, isn't it? What's the mini? Oh well the basic lupu is small enough though!

I have tried the new 3HD version and Lupusuper4 version.
Both boot to desktop with sound and internet working properly. I installed/updated several pets that I use on regular basis and have found no problems.

So, the choice depends on your needs for your installation. If you have only 256MB of RAM, choose the "mini" for best performance. If you want use/access "modern" SFS or archive files that use xz compression, use any of the "supers" -- super2 if you care about analog dialup modems.

If you want LibreOffice and have at least 900 MB of RAM, use either of the "lupulibre" ISOs unless you want to keep up with the latest by updating every month or two or have less than 900 MB RAM, in which case the "lupuplus" ISOs are appropriate. The "libres" have the final version of the latest series (4.2.7, right now; 4.3.7 next May).

Also, the choice of "super" depends on which one supports all of your hardware on a particular PC. I recommend super2 or the lowest-numbered one that works for you. HTH.

Thanks, ally, for mirroring/archiving the 5.2.8.7 set.

I discovered that libreoffice.org issued an unexpected further bugfix release, 4.2.8. I rebuilt the lupulibre and lupusuper2libre ISOs with that new version of LibreOffice 4.2 and updated the main message containing links to the files.

Those who have already downloaded a 4.2.7 version should consider getting the replacement, to have all of the 4.2 fixes.
