1.3 non-PAE?

#1601 Post by step »

@Geoffrey, is a 1.3 non-PAE build in your plan? I have one of those Centrino CPUs that don't support PAE. As a work-around I tried the PAE build and added keyword "forcepae" to the grub4dos menu.lst kernel line options - this trick works with some puppies - to no avail. No pressure. TIA

Seems that @Shinobar outlined a step that developers needed for that option to work for users with that Intel processor.

Yes soon, give me a few day's.

Firefox spat the dummy with flashplayer, there is a new flashplayer-11.2.202.425 update in the PPM.

My Acer Iconia W500P tablet has arrived & I have it charged and ready to play.

I formatted a USB stick to ext4, made it bootable, & tried it on my Netbook where it works fine.

I plugged it into the USB port of the tablet & rebooted & it was not recognized.

I don't see a BIOS screen ...

Found it ...
Press and hold down the Windows button and the Power button, when the machine starts, press F2. This will display the BIOS setup.
Carolina is trying to boot ...

Oooooh ... looks promising ...

It works!

Connected to router & internet & Firefox works ... neat!

It does seem to have some trouble handling hulu.com streaming video - even set to lowest quality it paints the screen visibly & there is no audio - I tried turning up Speaker & Headphone as well Master in the audio mixer.

Now when I mouse-over the taskbar sound control there's a pop-up message "No valid device and/or element"

Not sure how to proceed ... hmmm .... seems it's a Realtek chipset?

Never mind - found the card setting in audio mixer.

Firefox said Shockwave Flash was too old as well - updated but no impact on solving the slow screen painting problem ... suggestions, please?

Acer Iconia W500P Video Chipset is: AMD Radeon HD 6290

Our son suggested I try a smaller browser to help with the streaming video/screen-painting delay problem.

Will a privacy-protecting browser like Iron or Chromium work in Carolina 1.3?

Is there one that best features small/efficient, fast, & privacy-respecting?

Just tried QupZilla - it seems to handle streaming video better than Firefox but still jittery ...

Does Carolina 1.3 require both adrv and zdrv be in the directory with the sfs, initrd, & linuz files?

Yes, else you won't have any applications or drivers, though you can leave adrive out and add apps from the repo like any other pup if you wish.

I haven't had much luck with drivers for AMD.

No, well not anything new, there is an old Google-chrome in the repo sfs pacakages but it's really to old to be of much use.

battleshooter will be releasing a souped-up version soon, that may play better with your hardware and support newer applications.

Thanks mate :) You're certainly right about Xorg/Mesa though, been wrestling with that for a month compiling and recompiling, thinking there was something wrong with the build, only to find there was no issue - I was just missing a firmware bin file for my test computer!

Ah yes, my sister has a laptop like yours, the processor isn't all that great, so the GPU is relied upon heavily. Without the proper drivers though, Carollina will not use it and instead will use the processor for graphics, slowing the system down.

I don't recall it being tricky to install AMD drivers, I think your graphics card uses this installer, but check the release notes to be sure.

If not that, Geoff, does Carolina come with the free Radeon driver? It works on my kernel builds with an Ubuntu firmware bin file, but I don't know how it's setup with the original Carolina.

By the way Edoc. for the old Flash error, Geoffrey uploaded an upgrade to the repo, or is Shockwave separate from normal flash?

I might release today, see how it goes. I'm a bit undecided though. Not going to include Xorg I think, though I might release it as an upgrade pet after I figure out why Xorg keeps reverting to the depreciated keyboard and mouse drivers instead of evdev. I wonder if I need to upgrade XorgWizard?

The ssl certificates PET solved the problem on my Samsung NB30 Netbook, thanks!

I just realized that I had installed adrv & zdrv on my wife's laptop but had forgotten adrv on my Netbook. Lots more goodies to play with there now!

I need to sort out the boot on my Acer Iconia W500P Tablet so that I can save stuff - right now it won't let me save the PET for some reason - I'm booting from a USB stick.

I'm still waiting for the guy who triple-booted (MS version of windows, Linux, & Android) via BERG using a SD card - I need to know the code he used so I'm not thrashing around aimlessly guessing.

I can see the 12Dec2014 Flash update flashplayer-11.2.202.425 in the list but nowhere in the system to be downloaded:

Not via PPM (I even tried ALL).

Not in the smokey01.com directories.

What am I missing, please?

According to the Product Details here:
http://www.amazon.com/Acer-Iconia-W500P ... B00B10C4VG
My Acer Iconia W500P uses a ATI Radeon HD6250 Graphics Controller

I looked at the AMD driver site but remain uncertain how to proceed.

According to this thread:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions ... 175415441/

Some setting called "-current" may be needed.

WDYT?

It's in the repo via the PPM, just search for "flash"

AutoUpdate was on ... had I noticed it I likely would have instinctively toggled it off.

Odd that a search for "flash" finds it but it was not showing up under Internet or in the "All" listing.

Anyhow, being loaded now ...

Thanks! :)

Hah, I like that. You were impressed with Carolina without even seeing the full version with all the apps!

You seem to be getting some weird errors, did the md5sum checkout? Or have I been away from the Puplet scene for such a long time that Carolina works completely different from the usual?
edoc wrote:I looked at the AMD driver site but remain uncertain how to proceed.
I'm not sure what "-current" is either. I think it may be a Slackware downloading option? I'm just shooting arrows in the dark.

I can describe the usual way I install drivers from AMD.

1. Download and load devx and kernel headers.

2. Download, extract, and run the AMD drivers for the HD 6250:

3. When it's finished, exit to prompt and run:

Code: Select all

aticonfig --initial
4. Get back to the desktop:

Code: Select all

xwin
Hopefully you're back in and

Code: Select all

glxinfo | grep direct
tells you "yes"

Let me know if it doesn't work, as it can also be installed a different way, but this is the easier method.

What's the window manager you're trying?

Carolina uses a simpler /root/.xintrc that doesn't take in to account other WMs besides XFCE, so you may have to edit that accordingly.

There is no pinboard for a desktop, there is a jwm in the repo but that's a remnant from when Saluki was active, it never made it into the build, jemimah was adamant that Saluki was to be XFCE and likewise Carolina is XFCE only.
