How to run Apertium translation package after installation?
Hello,
I installed the apertium package with all dependencies, but there is no menu entry, even after restarting puppy. I have puppy precise 5.7.1 retro. IBM PC with 750 mb RAM saving to hard drive.
I tried entering "apertium" in the command line and I get a usage format. I tried many combinations trying to follow the format and nothing was successful. Is there a way to more easily use this package? Is there a graphical interface or an icon I can install on the desktop? I searched through folders and couldn`t find an executable file for running the software.
I like puppy, Really works great compared to Ubuntu on an older PC, but I have limited experience of using command prompt to perform various functions.

Re: Apertium language translator
Where did you get that package from? A link would be helpful.
Posting the output here (just copy and paste) might be helpful to help you.rbrehton wrote:I tried entering "apertium" in the command line and I get a usage format.
Re: Apertium language translator
I found it by searching "apertium" in Puppy Package Manager, installing with all dependencies and then I installed apertium-en-es the linguistic database for English/Spanish translation.L18L wrote:Where did you get that package from? The consoles I found in Puppy don´t allow copy and paste, but I entered it here manually:
(using a Spanish keyboard and no hash mark available for command prompt, so substituting "%" here) (right bracket unavailable, so I´m substituting common parenthesis "()" and "......" for spacing that I can´t duplicate here.)
% apertium
USAGE: apertium (-d datadir) (-f format) (-u) <translation> (in (out))
-d datadir..............directory of linguistic data
-f format................one of: txt (default), html, rtf, odt, docx, wxml, xlsx, pptx
-a..........................display ambiguity
-u..........................don´t display marks `*` for unknown words
-m memory, tmx.....using a translation memory to recycle translations
-o translation........translation direction using the translation memory,
..............................by default ¨translation¨ is used instead
translation............typically, LANG1-LANG2, but see modes.xml in language data
in..........................input file (stdin by default)
out.......................output file (stdout by default)

You can use a java app gui for apertium, is ugly but works.

I installed the apertium package and dependencies ("libapertium..." and "liblttoolbox..."). "Default-jre-headless_1.6" was already installed in Puppy Precise and after installing apertium it said an additional dependency was necessary, "default-jre jre". I couldn't find this in PPM or online but I found and installed "default-jre_1.6" which requires the "headless" version as a dependency. I installed the PET's for apertium-viewer and apertium-en-es modes. I tried the viewer before and after installing the addition Jre package.nilsonmorales wrote:You can use a java app gui for apertium, is ugly but works.

(There are also "openjdk-6-jre..." "openjdk-6-jre-headless..." and "openjdk-6-jre-lib..." that came installed in Puppy Precise)
The viewer showed in the Personal menu after restarting puppy, but nothing happens when I select it. Nothing shows in processes that I recognize. Do I need to start the apertium application somehow before opening the viewer?

Mark (Hightlight) text in console using mouse
Go to input field in browser
Click middle button of mouse (or left and right together)

I've never seen a translator work perfectly, but some seem better than others. If I get it working, I'll let you know how good it is.musher0 wrote:Hello, rbrehton.
My question is about the quality of the software itself:
does it do a decent job of translating into your language?
You probably have to refine a lot the resulting translation, yes?
Thanks in advance.

I haven't got it working yet. Read my recent posts. I'm hoping NILSONMORALES can give me a little more advice. Maybe I need a more recent version of java. There are several java packages in Puppy Precise, plus one or two additional that are needed for apertium. I think I'll try java 7, but I'm not sure if I need to remove any java packages before installing another version of java. I'll try removing the default-jre-1.6 package which is java 6. But the headless version is also installed, if it doesn't work, guess I'll remove that too. I'm flying blind, don't know much about this.
Java 6 didn't do it, so I re-installed puppy precise 5.7.1 retro and started over. This time I installed openjdk-7-jre_7u21-2.3.9 with dependencies and the other software packages you linked to. I select the apertium viewer in the "Personal" menu but nothing happens. Can you recommend anything else? thanksnilsonmorales wrote:You can use a java app gui for apertium, is ugly but works.
Just to let you know, I finally got it to work. Installing Java 8 did the trick, along with the other packages you also recommended. I downloaded the file "jre1.8.0_11_5.7.0.sfs" at http://puppylinux.org/wikka/JavaRuntimeEnvironment. (in case anyone doesn't know it, jre 1.8 is "java 8")rbrehton wrote:nilsonmorales wrote:You can use a java app gui for apertium, is ugly but works.
To help others trying to install,
I did a fresh install of Puppy Precise 5.7.1 retro. I installed the java file mentioned above from usb. I opened Puppy Package Manager (Setup menu) and configured (updated), clicked ok and then closed and re-opened PPM. I searched in PPM for "apertium" in all repositories and chose the first selection "apertium. . ." which is the machine translation package (the word "shallow" is in the description line). In the dialogue I chose to view and install all dependencies. Then from the same search list in PPM I selected and installed "apertium-en-es" which is the database for english/spanish translation. Then from usb I installed the apertium viewer PET and the apertium modes en-es PET. The links for both are in the earlier post above by NILSONMORALES. To run the viewer, go to the "Personal" menu from the bottom left hand corner of the screen and find Apertium Viewer. The viewer has the text box to enter words and paragraphs at the top and the translation at the bottom. There are intermediate steps that show in the middle. These don't make a lot of sense to me, but you can hide them by clicking a button at the top several times. It translates very fast and does a fair job, while not recognizing certain words.
I got it to work and I think it does alright, not as good as Google Translate but pretty good overall if you don't expect too much from it. Like you said, you have to do some refining as with any machine translator and it doesn't recognize certain words. In my test, it didn't recognize "licensed", "regarded" or "lifetime". It recognized "towards" but not "toward" which seem to be the same in usage.musher0 wrote:Hello, rbrehton.

Thanks. rbrehton, for the feedback.
Should I still install it on my machine, do you think? Or save myself the trouble and
use one of the online services (reverso or google, for example) when I need a
quick translation?
BFN.

If google translate is readily available, I would rather use that. It's definitely better. But a person still needs some knowledge of the language your translating to in order to know what the mistakes are because all the automated translators are imperfect. When translating into Spanish, google translate has a problem with no or negatives because in Spanish they use double negatives and so because English has only a single negative in a phrase, the spanish translation will often be positive, like "I don't have money" might translate as "I have money" when in spanish it should be "No have none money" or "no tengo ningun dinero". Generally though, google translate is better and has a larger vocabulary.
