Trying to set up my laptop's Smartlink dial-up modem...

#1 Post by ardvark »

And it's not working to well.

I wrote a thread asking for help over at the LinuxQuestions.org site, I didn't here because this has nothing to do with Puppy (Precise 5.6.1 recognizes and sets it up right off the bat,) but with Lubuntu 14.04. However, if any can help me solve this problem, either here or over at LinuxQuestions, I would certainly appreciate it. :)

Thanks!

Unlike Puppy I couldn't get winmodems to work with Ubuntu or deriatives.

Had to use an external windmodem.

Hi...

Yes, I'm finding this out. If I ever did need to use dial-up again for any reason, then getting an external modem modem might be needed (if there is a hardware usb modem, I don't have a serial port.)

So I've not used a dialup modem on Linux myself, and it's been years since I encountered one. But I'm curious about this.
* I presume that slamr is the right driver, and that it and ungrab_winmodem are being loaded in the correct order (dmesg might allow you to confirm that...)
* I'm seeing references to slmodemd online, which I presume is the command installed by sl-modem-daemon package.
Have you checked how it's being started on both Puppy and Lubuntu (via ps -ef)?
Also, I see a reference to using slmodemd thus:
slmodemd --alsa hw:1
(which presumably would be the card index, as found in /proc/asound/cards).

EDIT: for details, see:

There are indeed USB dialup modems... I attempted to use one, once, for a very silly project of mine that didn't get off the ground... I cannot in good faith recommend it, however, because I doubt it would work even for its intended purpose. I'll say it was a Rosewill but that's all...

Yeah, I didn't think there were too many USB modems that worked in Linux. But of all the distributions, I think Puppy is one of the few that supports dial up modems as good as it does. :)

Thank you guys for your thoughts... :)

Hi...

Thank you, yes, I did visit the page you linked to but didn't find anything there that dealt with my issue. I will post the readouts for dmesg and ps -ef, in case they are of help to you or others...

Cripes all this makes you realise how spoilt we are with Puppy with regards to things like Dial up had to use serial with the Buntu.

The only other distro that runs close is probably Vector which has the chestnut dialer.

FWIW - I've been using one of these little Trendnet TFM-561U USB dialup modems daily for a few years now, across at least a dozen different Linux distros (including Lubuntu... and many Puppies, too) - works flawlessly, set up and dialing out using wvdial...

I see no occurances of slmodemd, which is the service provided by sl-modem-daemon.

Code: Select all

#make sure it's in the right country:
dpkg-reconfigure -plow sl-modem-daemon
#do snd_*_modem /snd_intel8x0m get loaded?
#if so, you could use slmodemd --alsa
lsmod |grep snd

Hi Ibidem...

This is the result of "dpkg-reconfigure -plow sl-modem-daemon"...

Code: Select all

aaron@aaron:~$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure -plow sl-modem-daemon
[sudo] password for aaron:
Shutting down SmartLink Modem driver normally ... no slmodemd daemon running.
Unloading modem driver from kernel ... slamr.
The system user `Slmodemd' already exists. Exiting.
Starting SmartLink Modem driver for: slamr0.
Creating /dev/modem symlink, pointing to: /dev/ttySL0.
A window did pop up and ask me to choose a country, which I chose USA. It doesn't look like " snd_*_modem /snd_intel8x0m" gets loaded, if it's supposed to...

Code: Select all

aaron@aaron:~$ lsmod

Thanks again for your help! :)

@Moat: Thanks for the tip, I'll keep that in mind if I can't get the one I have working. :)

Regards...

You bet, Ardvark. :) Yeah, sure - it's more money spent (around $25, IIRC), another required device, another USB port taken up, etc... but for me, has been more than worth it just for it's ease of getting me quickly online.

But then again, some such challenges - like yours in this thread here - tend to be a bit more than I can chew on, anyways. I.e. - Newb-ish copout...?! :)
