Variant and Package descriptions
Variant and Package descriptions
I discovered Puppy about 8 months ago, got it working, and was impressed. Back then, there was only about a dozen 'variants' (eg: barebones, chubby, etc).
I have not been able to find a list anywhere of the currently available variants (and there are quite a few now) and how they distinguish themselves from each other. I could certainly google for each one individually, but what would be really nice is if the main page had a list (or link to a list) that outlines the major differences.
Not only that, but all the variants come with different installed packages. For example, Puppy Unleashed comes (well, the CD does) with 319 packages! But what do they do?
Most people know "word" is a fully featured word processor (windows) but only a 'few' would know "virtualdub" is a linear video editing and processing utility (windows again).
It is certainly appreciated that some variants list the packages (such as done with Unleashed), but what do they do?
Some are obvious, such as "wavplay", and even "xcdroast", but what the * is "amaya"?
I could google, but with 319 packages, that is a tall order. Surely at least the person that put the variant together knows what they all are!
Cheers to all, and Puppy - brilliant!
MM
PS: Still searching... Found "distrowatch.com" very useful indeed. Haven't found a variants list, but the packages list seems reasonable, and the links to what the packages are is very comprehensive.
There is also a little bit of stuff in the 'puppy linux repository'.
I guess having used puppy in the past I got hooked, so I am trying to stick with it. I am what people would call a newbie, hence I am struggling. I think a real newbie would look at the page a bit, and perhaps move on?

I've made a table of the major Puppy derivatives (Puplets) at
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/Puplets
I felt it was a neater organisation for beginners than "VersionsPuppy", which lists some derivatives according to which version of puppy they're based on. I organised by bootable puplets first, then alphabetically. I tried to make it easy to find locations to download puplets. I tried to make links within the table too but it kinda messed up. It could still do with information to be added but its a start.

Thanks, darrelljon. A lot of the information you are missing is actually on the VersionsPuppy page referenced by Lobster - stuff like iso sizes and some links to further info for your descriptions. When finished your table will be definitive, IMHO, so please keep up the good work!darrelljon wrote:I've made a table of the major Puppy derivatives (Puplets)

Nope on both counts.
Muppy is by MU, rather large, Mean Puppy is by JohnM, restricted to about 50 MB.
As for Emptycrust vs. Barebones, Emptycrust is a "barebones" version, but there is also at least one version of Puppy actually called "Barebones". Plus there are Litepup, Picopup, Barelypup, and probably more I'm not remembering.

darrelljon,
good work on making that page. I've updated it to include some links and a link to the official versions page.
I've also made a link to it on the main wiki page
Maybe we could further divide the puplets page into actively developed puplets and those that are not. We should also include the official version they are based on. But i dont' know if that needs its own table cell.

I'm still not 100% clear on the pedigree of various Puppies and Puplets so I knocked up this family tree. I'm sure there are mistakes, please let me know what needs changing and I will produce a better one shortly.

Thanks for your hard work on this Darrell, I'm interested in getting a larger Puppy. I'm Puppyless at the moment after messing up my 2.15CE hard drive installation (about which, more later on a separate thread), but my two faves so far are Puppy 2.14, which does install to hard drive, and PizzaPuppy 3.
Nice work darrelljon
Nice work darrelljon. scsijon made a suggestion for a sticky at Advanced Topics » Puppy Derivatives and I think a link to the page you created would be very helpful there.

Someone could do that and use this http://puppylinux.org/wikka/Puplets as at least a starting point? [/url]This page doesn't exist yet. Maybe you want to create it?
