I did not try pentoo - so can not comment.

I look at other distros for ideas, software etc. For example Chat being set up to go straight to Puppy IRC came after I started the Puppy IRC channel, seeing it well implemented in Kanotix and DSL was an idea I promoted.

However it takes Barry and the developers to implement an idea.

The dreaded West Australians have struck again. A crowd called go.pc (http://www.gopc.com.au/) have an offering that looks to be an Ulteo pre-cursor.
Their server gives you access to a function-limited SUSE from within Windows. They use NoMachine NX to compress screen image data for transmission. You can just put the code to access the server onto a USB stick and cart it to the local internet cafe or wherever. You get a basic version for free or pay to have access to more storage and function.
I quite like the idea of someone else doing all the hard work of maintenance, installation, backup, virus/spyware prevention etc.. As a value proposition, it could be a great alternative for folks contemplating buying a new machine to run Vista.
But then running Puppy on old machines is much more fun than either.
BTW I don't have any association with go.pc apart from using their service sometimes.

I'm trying DSL as well as looking at some Puppy derivatives. Tried, knoppix, Kubuntu, but currently on an old laptop, so focusing on the small versions.

that want a multimedia based distro that just works,
try MINT linux it's a spin off of Ubuntu, and thay are also coming out with a KDE version that's in testing right now..

BTW Puppy multimedia is faster to boot, but I would like to have a better "newbee"
friendly screen with Icons to the most commonly used Multimedia apps..

Lob is right. If you just cannot manage Puppy, go for Austrumi or TrueBSD. In either case it will be absolutely vital to read the instructions and carry them out to the letter. Neither has serious options like Puppy, so you get what you get, but what you do get is rock solid and fairly universal. Laptop users kindly leave the stage....

Are you in the UK? I could copy my DVD for you as reports suggest that there are rather a lot of tunes to play on the general release, including language selection. Mine was a cover disc from Linux Magazine.

Plenty of Spanish speakers in Europe and the USA. Maybe not so many in GB - yet! Hence my comments and offer, which remains open.

Its supposed to be really simple for newbies, but looks fairly awkward actually.
Based on Ubuntu so pretty large, you pay a fee to save your data to an online repository (even though you can buy usb sticks with the os on) and if you don't register and pay, 'it is possible you may not be able to connect to the internet'.

Maybe i'm being harsh? seems as locked in as windows.

Here is a new one - I think you pronounce it clean. They must be l33t (meaning elite) - ahem . . . Also comes from Oz - only gives you an auto connecting browser - for many that is sufficient.

I tried this, slower than Puppy but for schools, Internet cafes etc it would probably be a Goer. Don't tell me all the internet cafes have an MS licence. A perfect low cost propositon for many.
And a defence against inspections by MS.
I wish you would use Scroogle as the homepage though, for privacy reasons.

Re speed: thanks for that info, Puppy really sets an impressive benchmark in speed & size IMHO. I am looking into cl33n's ISO size and boot speed now.

Re scroogle: that's a super-interesting idea. I've received some other suggestions about privacy too. I'm keen to keep using as many familiar "brands" as possible (google and firefox) to help reduce the fear and confusion factor for occaisional computer users. But I also agree that more privacy is better. Perhaps I need to produce a few different cl33n versions...some versions could have familiar brands & features and others could have more privacy.

IMHO its the best slax's based distro,its awesome specially wolvix control panel which puppy has and lots more and its way smaller than what they claim to be

Cub is a small(ish) version of Wolvix

but for slax's fan its great work.

don't you guys notice that most if not all distros trying to attrack windows users and turning linux into a click&go OS(everything GUI)

I wonder what Linus feels about that ?!
