Video editing for Puppy?

#1 Post by Lobster »

Puppy maybe be little but do not let that fool you . . .

Listen to this story of our mascot from Barry:

"The real Puppy, the mascot for Puppy Linux, was a very tiny dog, a Chihuahua, but totally fearless. he didn't seem to know that he was vulnerable because of his small size.
Once when my sister was visiting my country property, she brought her Blue Heeler, a very solid middle-sized dog named Muti. We were out walking, and suddenly there was a substantial rustling of branches of a large bush, something was in or behind the bush. Muti took fright and ran back behind the legs of my sister, whereas Puppy got into launch position in front of the bush and barked furiously. It turned out to be my dad playing a trick on the dogs.
Puppy used to chase kangaroos and other big wild animals."

Anyway, Puppy Linux is like that, reckless, unshackled, in memory of the mascot, even though we know there's some risk.
Anyways . . .

Some of my family in Africa holidaying and will bring back loads of video - they want to do video editing. Now it is doubtful if a program will ever be in Puppy ever but where to start with this?

For example this distro (with some tasty looking fish) mentions it . . .

Hi Lobster,

If there is enough interest I will try to compile (or help you compile) Avidemux in puppy. It is a fine tool with an easy interface.

From the website:
'Avidemux' is a graphical tool to edit video. It can open AVI, MPEG, Nuppelvideo and BMPs. Most common codecs are supported (M-JPEG, MPEG, DivX, Xvid, huffyuv, WMA, etc.) thanks to libavcodec. Video can be edited, cut, appended, filtered (resize/crop/denoise), and re-encoded to either AVI (DivX/Xvid) or MPEG 1/2.
I actually use it in Fedora, that's why I haven't tried under puppy.

There are other Free utilities http://directory.fsf.org/vid/manip/

I mention the need for broader interest because for my latest 'projects' (Mercury videoconferencing, CUPS printing, Opera 8.50, JWM themes ) I haven't received any feedback either good or bad. Only a couple of people were interested. For a couple of people it's easier for me to explain how to do it than to create a package with instructions.

The main issue with avidemux (and other video editing tools) is the long list of dependencies.

Here is the list for avidemux http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/doc/en ... l.xml.html

I understand. I (maybe) got xbasic running from a dot pup yesterday. For most people wxbasic will be sufficient. Barry created a gambas Basic pupget but nobody but me was interested - I thought it was an excellent environment. I needed some company for Gambas . . .
I was gonna create a dotpup for the Curl Language (different to GuestToos recent cUrl dotpup) but it is closed source and well just not really right for Puppy - though the language is great and the RTE is only 4 meg but much faster and more efficient than Java . . .

I will have a look at the suggested video links. For me it is too specialised - I do not have a video camera - just a webcam . . . Let us see if there is any interest. Many thanks :)
The Cups printing I have not used but Opera and the JWM themes I have downloaded. I tend to look at every new dotpup - off to find the new 6 meg Java from John Murga . . .

:)

Many thanks for all your efforts

rarsa,
what about Irfanview?
I'm not sure about the editing but it's a great all around
viewer/player/manager and maybe editor.
Seems like I was able to cut n paste video with it in WinXP Pro.
They haven't ported to Linux yet so...
Sorry to jump in...
I just had a thought!

I built Cinelerra 2.1 a while ago

I've got alien packages on this page:

Don't forget the dependancies.

You could try Chainsaw Linux

http://www.chainsawlinux.com/

To see what linux video editing is like (uses cinelerra and kino plus some other things)

You can also try LiVES (Linux Video Editing System)

http://lives.sourceforge.net/

Its got a lot of dependencies though, but there are rpm's available
Download a better Computer :)

I tried the grafpup version but it did not work properly in 2.12 (well it is designed for Grafpup . . .)
gonna give this a go - would be worth dotpupping ;)
Anyone up for it?
Cinelerra is a great program (from what I saw with Grafpup)

mpeg4ip-1.4.1 needs to be renamed mpeg4ip-1.4.1.tar.gz

I am interested Dougal - will give it a go

I got cinelerra running but not working
had to download this lib
http://switch.dl.sourceforge.net/source ... 0.1.tar.gz
as Johns links was not right :(
  • The process is to download all the files
install as alien packages with pupget
    restart x
and then type cinelerra at cli
let me know if you get it working
I had very low quality images loaded and running with Nathans grafpup version
but no more than that . . .
with Johns version I could load a movie but not play it (that might be my ignorance)

My favorite video editing app. is VirtualDub, it's very capable & free.
It handles codecs, does muxing, cutting & appending, & will capture from a card.

I think it's only for Win. & running it under Wine would really be hit & miss.
I don't know what it was written in, but I'd guess C, so maybe it could be ported?

If help is needed, I'll be glad to provide assistance in making it work.
There's also many tutorials on the many different types of video processing.

Sorry, I haven't updated that page in a while. I have the libs from that package that are needed here:

http://www.detroitmusicawards.com/puppy ... 4.1.tar.gz

You don't need the whole mpeg4ip-1.4.1 package.

I'm going to upgrade a few things there and put together a .sfs file soon. Just want to finish up the LUKS stuff first.

My students just produced some video for me at the end of their weather unit and I was looking to see how best to edit it. I've read up on kino, cinerella, and lives and don't know which of them to pick.

I'm going with Cinerella (because that was what was linked here) unless someone tells me not to.

I tried Cinelerra in Apodio and seems great... any chance of having it as a dotpup or sfs for Puppy 2.12 (or 13)?

It would be a nice xmas present :-)

Cheers, Marco

avidemux: i was going to recommend "virtualdub" or something- gpl... only tried the windows version not sure about puppy... but i think it became avidemux so great.

irfanview: thought it was windows-onlly. i can view some files with it in wine, but mostly cant do much in linux. if you know a secret about this please let me know. i would love to use irfanview in windows. i dont think it edits video tho, just images?
sadly, it is not possible to separate politics from free software. free software - politics = unfree software.

I actually uploaded it to MU's server on Dec 24th... I just never got around to writing the descriptions so didn't tell him to move the directory to it's correct place...

If you can log into dotpups.de via ftp, you can go into the "dougal" directory and you'll find in it the "kino" directory with everything.
If not, we'll need MU to move the files...

Grafpup-104 deluxe had Kino and Cinelerra both. I intend to do a repeat when I finally get the next one released, but don't expect that for some time still. I took a few months off from development but I'm back at it with a vengeance now.

Apart from just getting the base editor working you will also need a way to get the video into the computer. This usually means firewire and dvgrab. If anyone needs some help getting that going I might be able to help, like Rarsa said though it depends a little bit on the level of interest.

kino:

Seems to work at first sight, at least in Muppy007 it starts without errors.

i obtained both 104 deluxe and 104 standard - which is a shining jewel in the puppy crown by the way - and i cannot seem to figure out any way to get it running with the deluxe features. i also signed up for the grafpup forum, but i'm not sure i can post there. at one point i ran the image with 512mb ram available, that has to be enough. must i have a save file to use deluxe?
