Probably I should've said the old savefile was actually a save directory; I had used mavrothal's (?) Luci_SaveDir-6.pet
EDIT: I deleted everything, extracted anew from the iso, and rebooted (making a fresh savedir).
It works.
That's the good news. But the old savedir should have worked, as well. "Frugal" just means that the layered file system is involved, regardless of whether the save entity is a 2fs/3fs/4fs file or a directory.
Changed to jwm.
Does not work; ie, xwin doesn't load a GUI.
xorgwizard does not help.
Editing /etc/windowmanager to openbox restores the ability to load a GUI
Now,
that is a very important issue to report. Thank you.
One of the new packages is an updated version of JWM, which is probably related to what you are seeing. Give me a little while to check that out in my test PC, so I can look for clues.

An hour later:
I found the solution! A library file is newly needed. But that has been addressed long ago by Barry, who has provided the file for precise and slacko here:
http://distro.ibiblio.org/quirky/pet_pa ... ckware.pet
For reference, his blog entry is here:

For now, users of JWM can install that pet in any of the lupu variants. I will include it next time I rebuild the ISO files. I have verified that it works in lupumini and lupusuper2.
