SeaMonkey lost my emails

#1 Post by NETTKNUT »

I am running my emails on seamonkey but suddenly my inbox is empty. Everything else appears OK. I can't find what is wrong. Do I have to re-install?

.mozilla Profile changed?

#4 Post by davids45 »

G'day NETTKNUT,
Have you checked the seamonkey profile in /root/.mozilla?
The .default directory there should lead you to where the mails are stored (e.g. in a Mail directory).

If you changed seamonkey profiles recently (knowingly or unknowingly :) ), your mails could be stored in the old profile. Try the seamonkey profile manager (e.g. Tools>Switch profile) to check if there is another (older) profile that has your emails.

Have you switched from an email-address-named mail folder to a 'Local folder' or vice versa, so your emails are in the now unused (not displayed) Mail folder in your profile?

Try looking for a 'Mail' folder with pfind or similar file-searcher on your computer.

Good luck.

Thanks for all your very helpful emails. Unfortunately my computer is not behaving as it should and is not saving properly to the hard disc. I might have to start a using tablet I recently bought until I get things back to normal; so there will be some delay in chasing up my lost emails I am afraid.

Glad to say I have now resolved this problem. The authentication setting in 'Inbox/ Edit/ server settings /security settings was wrong. It should have been STARTTLS normal password. I must have tinkered with the setting to "None" I'll mark this as 'solved'. - - - SOLVED - - -

If you are using a pupsave file...
It would be a good idea to move the Seamonkey Profile out of the pupsave and into the /mnt/home partition.
You'd be doing this so that when/if you restore a backup copy of your pupsave, the emails etc remain up-to-date.

Thanks to Sylvander on modifying pupsave to include emails; a really useful tip.

I wonder if you've misunderstood?
I'm saying you should EXCLUDE emails etc from your pupsave, because...
If your profile->emails are included in the pupsave...
And you make a backup of the pupsave at some point in time...
And then later restore that pupsave backup...
Your emails would jump back to the way they were when the backup was made...
And you'd thus lose all emails after the backup.
