Barry, I noticed XVkbd virtual keyboard in your blog, specifically about adopting the dejavu fonts patch. If xvkbd 3.7 is the plan for Quirky here's an updated font patch file that I derived from Fatdog64's when I compiled 3.7 for it.
Could you please attach to this thread the script that you wrote to start xvkbd in the local keyboard layout? I waant to adapt it for Fatdog64's xvkbd-3.7-x86_64 package. Thanks.

Attached is the template packages-templates/xvkbd folder.

This will process any xvkbd binary package, DEB or whatever, applies dejuvu font, creates menu entry as well as JWM tray entry.

Quirky Linux 7.2.3

#124 Post by L18L »

Installed 7.2.3 on a partition. (why not just DISTRO_TARGETARCH=$(uname -m) ) ?

loading kernel modules....
after about 10 sec: black screen for ever...
But Alt-CTRL-Del is working.

All Puppies, Quirkies and Fat dogs are working OOTB with driver modesetting.
Motherboard AD2550-ITX
http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/AD2550-ITX/index.us.asp

Why is there no fallback to driver modesetting?
(boot with qfix=nox was useless)

Sorry, cannot test more than this.

Thanks @James C and Thanks @L18L. This helps to see the issue. I have had the same issue in use on Just-Lighthouse, Slacko64 as well.

I wonder: Is there a "standard" way to expose a 64bit PC? Isn't both "AMD64" and "x86_64" included in that? If so, maybe a future version of the script might be universally independent of the distro in determining if the PC's Linux is 64bit.

Just a thought.

Testing Quirky Werewolf64 7.2.3 k 4.2.5

#127 Post by ETP »

Testing Quirky Werewolf64 7.2.3 k 4.2.5

8GB image was installed to a 16GB USB2 stick using Win8.1/Portable Apps 7-Zip & Win32diskimager.
Nice to see the 2nd partition is f2fs once again and the inclusion of dbus/vlc.

The following pets were installed some of which were created for Werewolf:
  • firmware_linux_network-4.2-20151102|linux kernel firmware for network
firmware_linux_display-4.2-20151102|linux kernel firmware for display, gpu
    ListDD-1.1|List dynamic dependencies
    JWMDesk-1.1|JWM desk manager
    Right-click-april64-6.9.6|Right click menu utility
    ChromeAppLauncherWolf64-V1|Chrome App Launcher
    xdotool_3.20130111.1-3.1_amd64|no description provided
wbar_2.3.0.1_enhanced_Wolf64-V1|A light and fast launch bar.
    PupControl-2.6|Control panel
    GetLatest64bitChromeVersionWolf-V1|Get Latest Chrome Version
    google-chrome-stable_current_amd64|Access the Internet
    PupClockset-2.4|PupClockset manager
    UrxvtControl-1.1|Urxvt configuration
    htop_1.0.3-1|interactive processes viewer
    PupSnap-2.5_Scrot-0.8_64Bit|PupSnap screen capture
Google Chrome expects to find machine-id in /etc so a symlink was created in that
location pointing at /var/lib/dbus/machine-id. Other apps may also need that and I
included it in the GetLatest64bitChromeVersionWolf-V1.pet

Firmware for BT & wireless cards also seems a bit light/outdated.
e.g.

Code: Select all

10.402457] rtlwifi: rtlwifi: wireless switch is on

That is the only issue I have ever had with Quirky. And I have had the same problems as you have described with it. I am giving Quirky Werewolf64 a shot. Thank you!

Booted the USB flash to desktop. The 2 primary issues reported (of which the LAN-WAN is critical on this PC, a UEFI Dell AIO touch), still remain. Any info needed to further explain the problem from the system's view, just ask.

Where's the installation instruction for Quirky Werewolf? Or is it the same as all the other Quirkies?

Review Werewolf 7.2.3

#135 Post by don570 »

Review Werewolf 7.2.3
Computer: IBM desktop with Intel graphics

I installed http://ftp.nluug.nl/ibiblio/distributio ... .3.usfs.xz

to a USB stick using the script, however the screen would become scrambled after a couple of minutes.

Also I still have the problem with pschedule not recognizing my type of
clock correctly. I use 'local' time because this is a Windows XP machine.
Alarms are several hours out of wack.

pschedule thinks I have set it to 'UTC' machine. The time in my tray is correct though.

Or maybe "six of one, half a dozen of the other"

SeaMonkey is crashing randomly.

Did a full USB install.

Touchpad worked without having to configure.

Broadcom wifi connected without difficulty.

Having had some difficulty with the previous release I'm delighted with the way this is working.

Thanks Barry for this excellent OS.

Filing an SNS bug here, as requested by BarryK in another (unrelated) thread.

This affects basically every Pup I've used SNS with. I don't think it affects the 4.x series Pups or older -- but I haven't used those (including ClassicPup) long enough for the bug to crop up. It is definitely present in later 5.x.x Pups and in TahrPup. This bug only seems to show in a laptop with a PCI Express Mini Card based wireless card, and I cannot vouch for whether or not it shows in wired connections -- I as a general rule do not use wired anything for Internet connections -- or MiniPCI wireless cards, which use a different protocol and connector. I can also not rule in or out small form factor desktops with PCI Express Mini Card wireless cards... although I'd tend to rule them as affected, if I had to choose. (A computer does not know its own form factor.)

As I only use SNS for connecting to networks, I cannot also state whether other network connection utilities within Puppy are affected. I suspect not, under the "I would have heard it if they did" guideline, but that is by no means a formal rule!

After several sessions, with either savefile or savefolder, the computer will begin to, at random, disconnect from the network without notifying the user. The icon in the bottom tray reflects a status of 'connected' but browsers (eg Chromium) will report that they are no longer attached to the Internet.

Sometimes issuing "ifconfig wlan0 up" is enough to fix the problem and reconnect. Sometimes "disconnecting"/reconnecting through the tray icon works. Sometimes the profile in SNS must be deleted and re-made, and sometimes it will refuse to delete and must be overwritten by creating an identical new profile.

Further, the period of reliable connection is random. Sometimes it will disconnect twice in the same minute. Sometimes it will go days between disconnections. There is no indication of when it is about to disconnect, although on days when it's bad, I do notice that the signal strength as reported by SNS has changed when I reconnect by rebuilding the profile. Sometimes it's up, sometimes it's down. It does seem to be affected by distance from the access point, and therefore may be a defect in how SNS deals with a weak signal dropping out... if I am in a room ~20ft from the router (access point), I have almost no trouble from this bug. If I am in my Out house, substantially farther away (more like ~50ft) I can expect the bug to crop up and frequently.

I will note that this could be a driver issue or an issue with some underlying application/utility/etc that SNS relies on -- I have done no testing on this, as I lack the knowledge to even predict what to test or examine. I am simply reporting symptoms and the parameters within which they are experienced, in hope that someone can come along and patch it up.
