Imminent hard drive failure
There is some bios settings that are specific to a SSD.
They are not a will work or will not work setting, but do make it work best.

The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

If it has SATA interface it probably does have the setting option.
It will be something like this:
See image below.
However, this is a HP computer, so who knows for sure how much setting options it has. Some name brand computers have very few setting options.
This deals directly with the hard drive interface, so it should have options.
Only way to know is look in the bios setup.
From some quick Google searching. Your laptop may be set to AHCI by default and there may not be a way to change this.
So, it will be good the way it is.

No, but I gave my old drum kit away for free to a music store collecting instruments for refugees!

As a gift.
But he changed his mind.
If anyone wants it, they can have it for the price of postage.
It only needs a hard drive.
4 Gb RAM, CD/DVD writer and a high capacity battery that is less than a year old.
Everything works great, no issues.

Hey Andy, are you in the U.S.? If so - and the offer is still good - I'm thinkin' I'll take you up on that. My old Linux-dedicated HP DV5000 has just gone belly-up, so I'm needing a replacement. I think I can do Paypal (believe I have an old, un-used account). I'm in Michigan.scientist wrote:If anyone wants it, they can have it for the price of postage.
Unless Burn_IT would like it to "modernize" his rig.

Cleaned it up a bit and blew out the dust, swapped in my old, failed-screen laptop's HD with Mint 17.1 installed, and with just a few minor tweaks everything's up again and running smooth as silk.
Thanks again, Andy... it's a keeper beater!

All I can think is somebody glued it there to either help block that distracting blinking wifi light while watching movies (from a very low chair...?) or to prevent inadvertently switching wifi off. I may try to remove it, but doesn't seem to be hurting anything as is (clears screen well enough when lid is closed).scientist wrote:Did you figure out why the gasket is around the wifi switch ?
And that touch-sensitive, sliding-light volume control next to it - yeah, that'll be easy to get working in Linux... No matter - the in-OS volume control works just as it should.

I put it there because I frequently bumped it and turned off my wifi and then wondering why I could not get on the internet.Moat wrote:All I can think is somebody glued it there to either help block that distracting blinking wifi light while watching movies (from a very low chair...?) or to prevent inadvertently switching wifi off. Ahh... like, umm, that's never happened to me... I'll leave it right where it's at, then! Good thinkin'.scientist wrote:I put it there because I frequently bumped it and turned off my wifi and then wondering why I could not get on the internet.
@ musher0 - Feels almost as if I transplanted the brain of my favorite old, crippled and dyin' dog into a younger dog's body. If only...
