You mean I should have kept Windows 10 as a fallback because it works better ?

In any case XenialPup is now booting direct from the eMMC drive on my ACER.

"Works better" --- well, I don't want to get into that on this thread but possibly more stable. Possibly not. Just had Windows10 crash on me, yesterday. Still, I personally don't believe in wiping the original operating system off a computer unless you have multiple computers.

A lot of Puppies are works in progress so I wouldn't recommend installing one as the only operating system at least until running it via usb or CD for a while to be sure it's what you want and continuously works without significant flaws.

Battery Condition Indicator not updating

#266 Post by Robin2 »

On my new ACER Cloudbook the battery condition indicator does not update. It only shows the position as it was when Xenial booted.

If I click the indicator it opens the detailed window which correctly shows the data relating to the battery.

OOPs - I have just realized I posted this in the Quirky Thread rather than the Xenial Thread.
Apologies for being stupid

Actually I had the exact same problem with Quirky8

Quirky Xerus 8.0 final

#267 Post by Billtoo »

I did a new install to the hard drive of my emachines laptop:

video-info-glx 1.5.3 Sun 29 May 2016 on Quirky Xerus64 8.0 Linux 4.4.7 x86_64
5.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] RS690M [Radeon Xpress 1200/1250/1270]
oem: ATI ATOMBIOS
product: RS690 01.00

X Server: Xorg Driver: radeon
X.Org version: 1.18.3
dimensions: 1280x800 pixels (338x211 millimeters)
depth of root window: 24 planes

direct rendering: Yes
server glx vendor string: SGI
server glx version string: 1.4
OpenGL vendor string: X.Org R300 Project
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on ATI RS690
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 11.2.0

AMD Athlon(tm) Processor 2650e
Core 0: @800 MHz

I added some applications with QPM, was able to update Gogglesmm to the
latest version.
Also installed Vlc-2.2.2.5 from QPM.

Working great.

EDIT: I downloaded the source for the Gtktetris from the Fatdog64 repo on
ibiblio and made a pet for Quirky Xerus 8.0.

It will create an icon in the Fun section of the Quirky menu but to get
the proper icon download the tetris.xpm.gz and rename it to tetris.xpm,
then put the file into the /usr/local/lib/X11/mini-icons directory.

I enjoy this game so maybe others will too.

Quirky8.0 Xerus bug w/ Broadcom "b43" wireless driver module

#268 Post by Belham »

Hi all (and Barry),

Has anyone had any success getting Quirky 8.0 Xerus to work wirelessly? Especially if you have the ubiquitous (b43) broadcom wireless? I have a 2009 HP Mini 210-1010NR laptop, and it needs the "b43" wireless driver. How do I know this?

Well, I also currently have run Tahr64, Slacko64 and Fatdog64 on this laptop, and each time each one of those OSes loads, it properly loads the Boradcom "b43" driver this laptop needs. But Quirky does not. Even when it says it has loaded, it tells me I have no wireless hardware, which I know is wrong, lol. What's the kicker here is that even Barry's old 32-bit Precise Puppy 5.7 effortlessly loads the correct "b43" driver and away I go on this laptop.

So, what is up with Quirky Zerus 8.0 64-bit? I have been using Xerus on this laptop via a ethernet connection for about 5 weeks now, love it, as it is always stable, fast and reminds me of my love for Precise Puppy 32-bit. But today, I wanted to take the laptop off my desktop and move it upstairs, which meant moving to wireless, and then I ran into a brick wall. It became a no go, despite Xerus telling me the b43 driver is loaded and ready to go. What's worse, there is not even a recognition from Quirky Xerus that I have any wireless ability on this HP laptop (his had nothing to do with setting up the wireless network as I cannot even get to that stage since Quirky Xerus says there is NO wireless hardware anywhere).

Is this possibly a bug somewhere either in the Xerus drivers and/or the driver not loading despite Quirky saying it has loaded it?? (...please know that also let Quirky do the "autoload" test, to rotate thru and try all the wireless drivers, and it always immediately returns to the "b43" driver...and, yes, the Quirky firewall is disabled).

Could there, Barry, be a mistake when the "b43" wireless module was compiled and put in Quirky 8.0 Xerus?

Anyone else using the "b43" driver and having success? I even had a friend try to get Quirky 8.0 Xerus working on his laptop, which also needs the "b43" wireless. He downloaded Quirky8.0 Xerus, burned it to a CD (I had did both, USB and CD, downloading Quirky two different times thinking I had a corrupted download)...anyhow my friend got the same result as I did: Quirky says there is no wireless hardware in his laptop. So we know now that this is not our laptops, not when two different mftr latops are running into the same problem. It just boils down to Quirky Xerus runs great using a LAN connection but seems blind to any laptop that needs/requires the "b43" wireless driver.

Anyone have any tips on getting around this? Is there a way for me to pull the b43 driver from either Tahr64, Slacko64, or even Fatdog64 (which all currently work on this laptop, as I checked again today) and transfer it into Quirky 8.0?

Thank you for any help.

My emachines laptop has b43 wireless and it wasn't working in Quirky 8.0 Xerus either.
I booted my Quirky April64 flash drive install on the laptop and the broadcom wireless works fine on April64 so I copied the /lib/firmware/b43 folder to /lib/firmware in my Xerus 64 install and now the broadcom wireless works.
Also copied b43legacy and brcm folders but I think b43 did the trick.

Billtoo,

Can I ask which april64 version you took the b43 drivers from?

april-6.89/
april-6.92/
april-6.96/
april-7.0/
april-7.0.1/
april-7.0.2/
april-7.0.3/
april-7.0.4/
april-7.2/
aprilneo-7.1.93/

I am going to do like you, but rather than download all of these trying to find which version is best, I'd like to just grab the one you used. Somewhere along the way, the b43 and b43legacy wireless drivers got screwed up (my bet is the compiling) from Wary to Werewolf and to now, most especially, to Xerus. Surprised Barry never corrected this. The Broadcom B43 wireless is still one of the most used in all laptops over past decade. Lots of people with old laptops still have the B43. Someone besides us two has to have also experienced problems.

Anyhow, thanks in advance for letting me know which april version you pulled & copied the b43 driver from.

If I may interject to avoid any confusion: Billtoo got a FIRMWARE file, not a DRIVER. The firmware files should be the same across all the versions.

Dang, didn't work for me, Billtoo :( From April64-7.2, copied over the b43 and b43 legacy folders & put them in the /lib/firmware of my Xerus 8.0, and nada, nothing. Xerus still is saying my laptop doesn't even have wireless hardware---which I know is crap since Tahr64, Slacko64 and Fatdog64 all bootup on this laptop & quickly load the broadcom b43 firmware (sorry, rscn51). Something is screwy in Quirky Xerus, especially since I booted up the April64-7.2 off a USB, and bang, immiedately my laptop had wireless and April64 shows it loaded the b43 firmware.

This is over my head in attempting to fix. Regarding puppies, I can copy directories, make small changes here and there, know my way around them and can play with remastering, vmlinuz, etc., etc. I even know how to do the simple stuff like completely disable and/or remove a firewall (which I did in Quirky, preventing it from loading any firewall on startup). Heck i even downloaded Quirky 8.0 Xerus 3 different times, to make sure I did have a corrupted download. So, anyhow, finding why the b43 wireless won't work in Quirky Xerus while it somehow works in April64-7.2 on this laptop (along with s many other puppy variations mentioned earlier), I am going to have to say goodbye to Xerus. I don't have the brains for the solution. I hate the thought now of leaving Xerus because it quickly became one of my, if not thee, favorite after I got it setup like I like with ffox, chrome, and other stuff :(

Thanks again, Billtoo, for responding so quickly.

Update: Success! It never occurred to me to just completely delete the firmware folder in Quirky 8.0 Xerus and replace it with the complete firmware folder from April64-7.2. I did this, and sure enough, Quirky 8.0 Xerus booted up, immediately loaded the b43 firmware, and told me I had both lan and wireless cpapability. Woohooo. It is now running off wireless smoothly. Thanks again Billtoo!! I'd never went down this road if you hadn't posted :D

Belham:

I am trying to address your wireless issue via an RUXerus build by adding the b43 firmware to the next version. It will be posted in the I am creating it now so if you have an extra usb stick hanging around, I would appreciate it if you could do test on this.

I did not delete the entire firmware folder and recreate the April. I'm curious if the WoofQ will handle it properly.

Thanks,

Barry posted this on his blog about firmware that was left out of
Quirky 8.0.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have created a PET with lots of firmware for the 4.4.x Linux kernel (34.4MB):

http://distro.ibiblio.org/quirky/quirky ... 160423.pet

This will be in the next release.

Some Quirky 8.0 and earlier users reported needing Broadcom b43 and brcm network firmware -- this PET has what you need, I think.

Good reminder. If I recall, that pet didn't help me but still it's good to add it into my WoofQ for future releases. It will help someone....

Thanks,

Burned the .iso to to a DVD... no problem, runs just fine.

Next installed a few personal programs...etc..
Rebooted the computer with the new remastered DVD and got this...

Failed to load ldlinux.c32
Boot failed:press a key to retry...
Hi,
one possible solution: once xerus runs from livecd
1. before erasing the DVD, copy ldlinux.c32 from iso to /boot/iso;
2. edit /usr/sbin/remasterpup2, line 448 as follow, and save:

Code: Select all

   for F in vmlinuz initrd.gz ${ZDRVSFS} grldr menu.lst '*.xpm' isolinux.bin isolinux.cfg '*.msg' '*.16' ldlinux.c32 '*.HTM*' '*.ICO' '*.INF'
Afterwards, click on the save ico, then REMASTER, step2, step3.

Have fun, Charlie

We are getting trio's SVG Wallpaper Maker working in Quirky, see this thread:

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 430#915430

Put in that new /usr/sbin/qwallpaper, then await trio updating of Wallmaker PET to use the new qwallpaper.
