How do I share files between two Puppy Linux computers?

#1 Post by Guest »

Is there an easy way for a beginner to share files between two Puppy Linux computers? My two computers are connected through a local network.

The easiest way for you would be to download the latest version 1.0.4 and use the BetaFTP server program that is included in the Network section in the Start menu.

Thanks for the quick reply. I used BetaFTPD and it worked flawlessly.
However, how can I share my files locally and not over the internet?

you can use a webserver like httpd (Quisp) or Monkey to serve files too

to transfer files locally, just use the local address of your machine (something like 192.168.0.2)

a firewall should block access to your ftp or http server from the internet ... the default Morizot firewall should block any incoming traffic to ports 21 and 80

When I entered the ip address of my other computer into the Mozilla browser, a message appears saying:
The connection was refused when connecting to {the IP address}
How can this problem be fixed?
(I am using Puppy 1.0.4 by the way)

If you set up BetaFTPserver on one Puppy machine you should be able to access it from the other Puppy machine, if they are on a lan, using Gftp.

You only need to enter the address of the server machine into Gftp in the machine you are using as a client and start Gftp and it should open a directory on the server.

If tou get a message saying that the connection is refused it usually means that you have not started the FTP server.

The server must be running before it will accept login requests otherwise you are talking to a brick wall.

Would a NFS (network file server) dotpup be of any help to you ?

So shares could be mounted rather than having to ftp files ?

I'd include the NFS HOWTO from The Linux Documantation Project as well for an easy setup

Yes, a NFS Dotpup would be helpful. I searched everywhere and couldn't find anything similar to that. If there is one in existence, how can I find it?

I wunder why you not using gtkftpd , what in Barry's Puppy .
The only strange thing is that if you assign a directory (in the window) it say that its "not a file" . You should enter the directory by adding a "/" to it .

Thankfully to rarsa, I am able to use the betaftpd server tool!!!
But I need an http server, if anyone can provide assistance it would be very useful, I cannot explain my errors, becuase the error lies in myself I am not at all knowledgeable about this subject as of yet.
Yes G2 or guest too has created a package as of today, if anyone is knowledgeable about any of the pup http servers it would be useful and if you
are knowledgeable about guest too's package that would be helpful.
anybody willing to help me would be very appreciated!!!
Unless you can get a website up on a ftp server???
I have no clue???

So what it all boils down 2 is showing me how to setup one of these darn things
once I am tought I am usually good to go!!

please and thank you!!!

There is an NFS dotpup in the works, ozbommer is doing some beta testing and will be putting together an non "Bladespeak" howto. So instead of running ftp you'll have a "windows type" file sharing setup

I have been searching and I came across TkApache it is written in perl and Tk
here is the address for TkApache

I really think someone should look into this as it seems interesting plus I have no knowledge of networking!!!

There is another page of interest: http://ultra.litpixel.com:82/Mohawk/mohawk_content.html

Been searching around for awhile trying to figure out how to share files between two Puppy computers. This seems to be a pretty good post, but rather old. Is it still up to date? And if not, how do you network two Puppy computers? I've got a router between then and have no problems in Windows, or the net in Puppy.

Thanks guys,

@battleshooter,

if you've got a working java environment, and wanted a graphical file sharing app, p300 is relatively painless to set up.
