kernel compiling in woof-ce
Been searching all night for somthing like this, i can report that it works like a charm on X-TharDR.TUX wrote:This is my first post:
Using stemsee's "2016 SUKK i've compiled 64 bit 4.4.6 quirky/puppy linux kernel with x32abi support
kernel is compiled for and tested in Bary Kauler's 'prototype" aprilneo-7.1.93 x32abi system (everything seems works fine)
in others 64 bit puppies xorgwizard doesn't work
Here is link to 4.4.6-x86_64_x32abi kernel package and sources:

And this one is a LTS if im not wrong?
Is it yet possible to build a puppy that has no X and uses the framebuffer device (/dev/fb0) out of the box?
I would like a console only/headless puppy (no X, no Xorg, no xvesa), that can play videos etc on the console ....
The most recent puppy that has high-res framebuffer support out of the box is still Akita :/ and that is well old ...

How ya doing Scott!!
I've just exited to the console on TahrPup and have been running an mp4 video via mplayer. Needs the video driver set as fbdev2 eg: "mplayer -vo fbdev2 somevideo.mp4".
Can't get full screen (yet), but plays well enough.
It's been quite a while since I've played around with framebuffer stuff, but I fancy a dabble again now.

Hmmm .. Will have to try that again ... Last I checked, I couldn't make anything work in framebuffer on tahr... but that was ages ago .. will have to try it out again...
Still seems strange to me that puppy doesnt have a 'headless' flavour/puplet with each release, being a lightweight distro n all .. maybe cos ppm still doesn't work as cli tool?
after discovering the 'ranger' file manager, i find i rarely "need" X at all ..
but cheers, i will check it out

@scottman - what do you need framebuffer for? As far as I know, all recent puppies come with framebuffer support nowadays (comes for free with KMS-enabled kernel, and with fbcon built-in already).

yes i realised that after i fixed a few thing on my netbooks xfce tahr puplet ... .. just me being dumb!jamesbond wrote:@scottman - what do you need framebuffer for? (dont wanna derail the thread with my ignorance, but on a side note, IMVHO puppy would be so much more awesome if it had a cli package manager .. or am i gonna find out that it does now? lol ... )

It may happen, but it's not implemented yet, that requires a rewrite...sc0ttman wrote:yes i realised that after i fixed a few thing on my netbooks xfce tahr puplet ... .. just me being dumb!jamesbond wrote:@scottman - what do you need framebuffer for? Using SUKK-June-2016 and the DOTconfig file from Fatdog64-710 (k 4.4.35) I compiled only the x86_64 of 4.9.4 kernel .
As seen in the picture , the /sys folder icon has a tag which belongs to " Extended attributes " ( 'Extended attributes' is in the right-click menu ) . Those two attributes - system.posix_acl_access and system.posix_acl_default - just stand there and I could do nothing about them : one can not remove any of them as the button would suggest . Everything inside /sys behaves the same way .
I did not choose the POSIX extended attributes ACL for any filesystems from menuconfig (no modules or built in) - I left the DOTconfig file the way it was initially . Should this be an evolution of linux kernel or something went wrong ?
Edit 1 : I think ACL is already in Fatdog64 710 with k 4.4.35 as seen in /etc/mke2fs.conf file . Only that this tag on /sys folder - and its content - was not present . Access Control List is about rights and permissions of files , folders - objects in general .
Edit 2 : I found that one could give up using 'Extended attributes ' . By checking the box in Rox (right-click in any free space inside a folder) -Optins-Compatibility-Don't use extended attributes .
However I don't know all the consequences of this action .By default that box is unchecked .

It's a good thing to start learning. Do you know where to find the devx file for your distro? You will need to click on that sfs and probably the kernel sources to load them, then it's usually just ./configure then make ba da boom ba da bing... or however "sukk" does itmistfire wrote:@stemsee can you please provide a precompiled zram for that version? I have no experience on compiling from source.
I would like to add another option to sukk, namely the ability to compile broadcom modules. I have not successfully done this yet. Help needed.
Currently my laptop has the broadcom chip and only the fatdog kernel 4.7.1 has the module and the fd system has the bc service to load the module. I wonder if James or Kirk would provide a how to with the required environment for building the brcm modules!
Cheers

framebuffer console for lucid 5.2.8.7
Lucid 5.2.8.7 (Dec 2016) with kernel 2.6 has fbcon and other required framebuffer modules.
Super Lucid 2 (kernel from Precise 5.7.1) also does, but halfway through boot, booted with vga=791 and with modprobe fbcon in /etc/rc.d/rc.local, the framebuffer console switches to plain 640x480.
I tried on two different laptops (both intel integrated graphics, 915GM, Xorg).
On one laptop I need kernel 3.2 or later for Xorg (and Xorg for mplayer).
Super Lucid 2 has 3.2 kernel. Super Lucid 3 and 4 have no console framebuffer support.
I use lynx in a terminal with fbi (framebuffer image viewer) as well as mplayer (to play DVDs).
Also much more text is visible at higher resolutions with framebuffer console.

I noticed this warning (attached) when I was compiling with the latest woof-CE kernel-kit. I started over, making the "linux_kernel-3.14.79-slacko64" folder manually before pressing the Enter to continue this time, and did not get the message any more... though not sure if that's what I was supposed to do.
edit: Drats, I guess not, now I got this warning instead (attached). Back to square one...

Thanks stemsee. The issue has now been fixed at the woof-CE level. I uploaded the finished kernel here.
kernel compiling in woof-ce
3 kernel updates came out today, 4.10.9,4.9.21,and 4.4.60.Sailor Enceladus wrote:Thanks stemsee. The issue has now been fixed at the woof-CE level. I uploaded the finished kernel here.
Seems like they are updated once or twice a week.
