new version 4.8

- discovered a way to speed up launching when windows share is not
available. I use the command option -l that is

Code: Select all

df -l
This lists the mounted partitions without checking for the windows share
folder. Huge speed up when my windows computer is down!

Newbie question on audio sources

#127 Post by luc0zade »

Hi, I see people talking about using BaconRecorder to capture the audio from radio shows - I want to record the sound coming out the speakers on my PC. However at the moment all my recordings are silent. Is there a basic troubleshooting guide?

Bacon recorder newest version installed In Puli,

#128 Post by Pelo »

Bacon recorder newest version installed In Puli, the high secured Puppy;
About how to record in a particular point of the computer, I had success for tape recorder (Transform songs to MP3) using Alsamixer PF6 and select audio card listed.
For speaker, i never tried but it's of most interest. Searching the how-to, right now.
A try by selection of pcsp, music on, i spoke during recording... my words were recorded too.

Have you tried 'retrovol' utility to set the sound source. Type 'retrovol' in terminal.

Baconrecorder uses arecord utility to record.

arecord uses alsamixer to select the sound card.

So I also suggest that you type 'alsamixer' in terminal and set your sound source.

Sometimes brand new laptops are tricky to get the sound to work properly
because the kernel is not new enough.

Bacon problems

#130 Post by Ehud »

I'd like to begin by saying, I'm a truck driver. I understand a good bit about computers but usually when I leave this forum (lurking, but I had another handle a few years ago, just can't remember it and have a different email) my brain is melted.

I downloaded your Bacon .pet, I believe it was 3.1. It records beautifully off the mic, but that way it also records my horrid allergies!

I record my wife's uncle's broadcast and then share it as a podcast for people of our faith on our facebook account and I need to find another way of recording it clean.

I was using ubuntu but when my mother liked my computer when I was fixing hers I gave her my ubuntu computer and took her limping along Dell Latitude D620. (Who can resist their mother? Especially a 78 year old mother!) With Ubuntu I was using pulse and recording from audacity.

I remember using bacon a few years ago on puppy and it worked fine. Any guess as to my problems now? I thank you in advance and if I don't answer right away, I'm home every night but I put in a lot of hours.

Puppy linux uses ALSA whereas Ubuntu uses PULSE

I rarely have problems with setting up the audio of Puppy linux.
It almost always works out of the box.

Ubuntu is a different matter

The only suggestion I can give is to install audacity and then
go to audacity's preferences or the top menubar

View > Toolbars > Device Toolbar.
http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/tuto ... evice.html

Try each input source that you are given on the list. Try your microphone .
If it's working correctly audacity will show the waveform when you
click record button.

I think that we don't use enough audio recording. For instance, for quick translation in french of english topics. My colleagues are not yet used to audio information. However that will be better than no translation..
That is my project.

I appreciate you getting back to me. I was thinking Bacon recorded off the sound card. I just thought maybe I had something wrong on my end. I didn't mess with any of the settings, but I could hear background noise. Granted I could be wrong, it's been known to happen. :-)

puppy_X-Upup_17.05 Bacon Recorder version it

italian bacon recorder available in multimedia menu puppy_X-Upup_17.05
I seldom use Bacon Recorder, i never use Bacon recorder. Precord can "pause", Bacon recorder cannot pause.
But i will go furter with, first by translating this topic, checking how users use it.
"A stop button to stop the scheduled recording from starting to
record or if it is already recording it will stop the recording safely.
"
About audacity, it can be used for recording audio tapes, i mean transfer them to mp3 files by changing where to record with alsamixer. See my information above.

Version 4.9a

I am now using /tmp rather than /root as suggested by mcewanw
rxvt -e arecord -vv /tmp/vu_tmp & { sleep 1; rm -f /tmp/vu_tmp; }

Looked into a pause button and it seems to much work for app
that simply records radio programs for further editing.

At the moment it does not record here, Don (like more recorders on Xenial).
Do you have an idea? Maybe something with Alsa?
Pulse does not work; it does not connect server.

I can record at the moment with streamripper and with right mousebutton on the pilon of VLC on the panel -> red button.
But that's it. The meter of Bacon does indicate a loop or something alike (half a second full, half a second low).

I hope this is not the reason for the problems with Puppy recorders:

Just saw your post. Interesting that streamripper works.

Bacon recorder uses 'arecord' which is part of alsa project which includes
utilities such as aplay and alsamixer.

I would see if 'aplay' 2barks.wav will work.

Alsamixer may have a setting for a sound card.

I was able to get a USB sound card to work thanks to alsamixer.

To test if recording is possible, I first use mhwaveeedit.
This allows me to test sound levels.

MhWavedit does not do anything here. Audacity the same.
It looks some internal linking does not work right in Xenial.
I can also for instance not tick a link in an email and read it in another
Workspace etc. Donf't know if there is a relation.
I did choose the right soundcard in Alsamixer.
Don't worry, be happy..
