There's a serious Catch-22 with the full install. The installation files on the CD are not available to the user in the Live-CD environment.
Details:
I booted from the LiveCD of Slacko64 6.0.3. I ran Puppy Universal Installer and chose Full Install to the HDD. Then the installer asks me where the files are. (How could it not know?) The choices: CD or Folder.
If I choose CD, it says, "Puppy is not on the CD. Please mount the CD ..."
pMount shows only the HDD available for mounting. And we're running from the Live-CD, so surely it is mounted, isn't it?
If I choose Folder, I can't find the CD files. /mnt/cdrom and all of the other mount points under /mnt are empty.
I can't see how full install could ever work!
Do I have to copy the installation files onto some other media to have them available during install? What am I doing wrong?
Can't find distro files for full install
I know it doesn't answer your question but use the frugal install
from your cd, create a folder of your choice, download the iso you want, click the iso file to expand it
copy the contents to your folder
click iso again to close it
run grub4dos
job done, takes a couple of minutes and you can have multiple pups

Thanks, I was going to try frugal install, but couldn't find the Frugal Installer program that's referred to in various places. The Puppy install supports only Full install to an HDD.ally wrote:I know it doesn't answer your question but use the frugal install

I think you answered my question when you said, "download the iso you want."
Isn't that the Live-CD iso? Those files aren't available when we've booted from that Live-CD.
The alternative to downloading the iso again would be a second copy of the Live-CD in a second drive! Awkward and confusing.
I'll give your method a try.
Re: Can't find distro files for full install
Click on the CD icon on the desktop to mount it, then run installer.jcoles wrote:There's a serious Catch-22 with the full install. The installation files on the CD are not available to the user in the Live-CD environment.
But frugal install is best option, not full.
Try this:
Boot with the live CD.
Run Pmount.
menu->Filesystem->Pmount
Mount the CD drive using this program.
This will be a full mount.
The CD drive icon on the desktop should change, showing the drive is mounted. A small X will show on the top right corner of the icon.
Now run the Universal Installer.
When Puppy boots from a live CD, the CD drive is mounted, but it is not a normal mount.
You can remove the CD and Puppy still works.
All of the files are loaded into memory, so nothing on the CD is needed.
This allows you to remove the CD and use the drive for other things.
The Universal Installer is suppose to know this, but sometimes it does not see the drive as mounted.
Slacko may need some tweaking to make the Universal Installer see the drive better.
Universal Installer should offer frugal or full install option.
Does depend on the device you ask it to install to.
A hard drive it should offer both.
However, you will get more of the Puppy features if you do install as a frugal install.
Do not think a full install is better than a frugal.
Puppies are specifically made for frugal installs.
The live Puppy CD is basically a frugal install.
If you do a frugal install to a device formatted in a Linux format (ext2, 3, or 4). You can use a save folder, which works better for saves.
But, a save file also works OK.

The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

After you do the frugal install to the hard drive.
You will need to install a boot loader.
Grub4dos Bootloader Config will do that.
Run it from the live CD.
