?? Black Rectangle Bottom right System Tray

#1 Post by philpup1 »

This question is mostly curiosity...but I am kind of new
to Puppy, and like to learn..(I am running Tahr 6.0.5 )

In the bottom right of the system tray, just to the left of
the time display, there is a black rectangle, with a faint
gray line vertically centered across the entire width.

All the other items in the tray have fly-over hints to tell you what
they are/do, and respond to right or left-clicks for functionality.

This one has none of those. I ran across it because I wanted
to display the date next to the time, and thought there might be space
if I got rid of this rectangle...( BTW, How *do* you display the date? )

Thanks...this is a very responsive forum!

Hi and welcome to the kennels.
Sorry not using puppy at the moment so can't tell you how to set the date permanently but if you hover over the time I'm sure the date appears.
As for the little black rectangle I am pretty sure that it is a sort of CPU meter. Try doing something pretty intensive and watch it.

That little rectangle, or rather the program that's showing it, has a name, but I forget what it is. I think it shows more than just your CPU activity. It's been discussed in the forum, but quite a while ago. If I remember right, it's more of a whole-body scan and shows the aggregate activity in your computer.

I don't know how to add the date to the time shown in the system tray. Forum member Zigbert has made a nifty program called Pwidgets that shows a clock and calendar on the desktop with today's date highlighted in the calendar.

Date in the tray and the little black rectangle

#4 Post by philpup1 »

alphadog and Flash,

Well, I can live with the little black rectangle, since
I just now found how to display the date in the tray!

Surprising I didn't notice it. In the pupclockset applet,
there is an option to display dow dd mmm hh:mm Am/Pm..
once I chose that, voila...it moved the other tray icons to the left
to accomodate the increased width..

Thank you both for responding. as I have seen before, this is a
remarkably responsive and helpful forum for a newbie!

Well, I can live with the little black rectangle,
It is a Puppy feature.
The program is xload.

xload is a program that shows CPU load, i.e. number of threads, from 0 to infinity.

You know you want to know that all the time

Well, it is useful if you think the CPU may be getting heavy usage. Quick reference to see what the CPU is doing.
This was more of an issue in the very early days of Puppy and slow limited hardware.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
When I was a kid I wanted to be older.... This is not what I expected

Philpup, if you want to set the time/date with even more detail, open the PupClockset applet again.

Hit the 'Options' tab.

In the 'Custom Format' box, you can enter any combination of the entries shown on this page:-

https://sites.google.com/site/easylinux ... ject/clock

Enter them in any order you like; just remember to make sure you leave a space between each one! You can also change the font, font size, colour, whether regular or italic, normal or bold, etc., etc.

Anything you add to the tray, JWM will automatically shunt things along to make room for it. No need to move XLoad.

Mike.

Not in Precise or the oldenpups either.
Tahr and Xenial have pupclockset in the JWM Desktop sub-menu

You can always just modify the .jwmrc-tray file in /root/ to add that stuff too.
Should be a line near the bottom of .jwmrc-tray that has something similar to

Code: Select all

<Clock format="%H:%M:%S">minixcal</Clock>
Change or add the letters between the quotation marks
Keep the same syntax (using H as example) %H: for each argument you add or change.
