palemoon browser
Have been testing Palemoon 27.4.0 recently with some mixed results. It seems to be a vast improvement, on the other hand, It doesn't play videos on Fox News: http://video.foxnews.com However, version 26.5.0 (Atom) (my preferred version) does.

This is what I've been saying for weeks on murga (in different threads) that something is terribly wrong with Palemoon. On many---and I mean "many" diff sites since I have tested & tried them, Palemoon just ups and crashes for no reason when trying to play videos from a wide range of sites. On other Linux forums, people are complaining about this a lot, but the developer(s) of Palemoon have seemed deaf about it even though people have been reporting it for some time now. The last most-stable Palemoon was 27.2, from then on, something has happened to Palemoon. This website video problem needs sorted out, as it happens with none of the other browsers I run. And I'm not the only one who has currently sh!t-canned Palemoon in favor of other browsers---until this problem can get sorted out.
Tested 27.3 on thinkpad T42 on Devuan One - no problems with the site Anikin posted

. . . Fox News videos are now playing in my Palemoon 27.4.0.
Here's the trick, that corrected the issue: go to Preferences/Content/Video and Uncheck Enable Media Source Extensions (MSE) !!! See the attached image ... Life is good again. On the face of it, this release seems to be a bit lighter and snappier than the previous versions.

the main developer is not responsible for the linux version. And if people have problems on linux, they should report it on the pale moon forums and the developer of the linux version will know how to deal with it.belham2 wrote:anikin wrote:Have been testing Palemoon 27.4.0 recently with some mixed results. Thanks, anikin - this indeed did the trick for me with 27.4.0 (32 bit) on XenialDog. Agree, also, that this version is otherwise running very well overall. Seems to be the case with Palemoon over the years - some releases tend to be buggy/unstable, followed by some that are quite bug-free and truly excellent.anikin wrote:. . . Here's the trick...
Many thanks and great appreciation to Walter Dnes for his continuing efforts with the Linux versions!

You're welcome, but I don't really do a lot of additional work. I'm not a C/C++ programmer. I have a few machines at home and I had already done the work to write a "robo-builder" script that runs off the same source code, but builds an optimized version for each machine, based on config files. The SSE version is just one more version, in its own directory, with its own config files. It's as if I had one more machine at home to build Pale Moon for.Moat wrote:Many thanks and great appreciation to Walter Dnes for his continuing efforts with the Linux versions!

The SSE Version of 27.4.1 is available for downloading. This is a small update to address some media and web compatibility issues. The release notes for this version are at https://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=16299
The download URL is ftp://contrib:get@ftp.palemoon.org/SSE- ... 86.tar.bz2
Since this is not a mainstream build, it has to be installed manually. See the first post in the SSE-linux Pale Moon thread at https://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.php?t=13530 for manual install instructions.

Hi Walter, that download URL is for the SSE version intended for Linuxboxes with old-old CPUs. I downloaded palemoon-27.4.1.en-US.linux-i686.tar.bz2 from http://linux.palemoon.org/download/mainline/, and install it manually.
Question: Does Palemoon support the key shortcuts from Firefox?

Sorry about that. I've editted the post to clarify. I had originally copy+pasted from the announcncement in the Pale Moon forum SSE-version thread, where it was implicit.tallboy wrote:Hi Walter, that download URL is for the SSE version intended for Linuxboxes with old-old CPUs.
Yes; I checked https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/ke ... ks-quickly and the same keys seem to work in Pale Moon. I had to check and test them right now, because I don't use them all. I personally use a small subset of them...tallboy wrote:Question: Does Palemoon support the key shortcuts from Firefox?

- {CTRL}+ to zoom in; {CTRL}- to zoom out; and {CTRL}0 to restore original size
- {CTRL}R to refresh
- {CTRL}F to find/search text
- {CTRL}W to cloase a tab
Thank you, Walter. I use them mostly to navigate between tabs, and they seem to function as they did in FF.
I run off a live CD and often switch location, so my Puppy is frequently started. Programs that are frequently updated, like browsers, are not stored on the CD, but in a dedicated folder on a USB memory stick or a HDD. I have unpacked the Palemoon tarball there, and made a short installation script based upon the suggestions on the page dealing with manual installation of Palemoon. It takes just 3-4 seconds to install everything, including a copy of the .moonchild productions config file, and a setup with the browser related commands for Puppy.
BTW: I run Lucid 5.2.8.7. I removed the 27.2.1 version from /opt/palemoon/ and copied in the latest 27.4.1, but I kept all the settings in /root/.moonchild productions from the old version. I have not had any trouble with that so far.
And .moonchild productions should be .moonchild_productions in Linux...

Pale Moon has been updated to 27.4.2. This is a small update to address some security and stability issues. The release notes are at https://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=16457 Install instructions for the mainline build are at http://linux.palemoon.org/
The SSE build tarball can be downloaded from URL ftp://contrib:get@ftp.palemoon.org/SSE- ... 86.tar.bz2 Because it is not the mainline build, it has to be installed manually. Manual install instructions are given in the first post of thread https://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=13530

I am in puppy 4.31 (zigbert's Stardust 013) and my palemoon 27.4.2 glibc219 tweaked. I am experimenting the first crash of palemoon on a particular italian site:
http://www.mercatoliberonews.com/
Perhaps the site has bad html code but it correctly displays with a chrooted firefox 45.9.0 esr. I report this for Walter Dnes to fix the mainline sse2 palemoon.
EDIT: further trials prove the crashing of the mainline sse2 palemoon 27.4.2 on that site even installed without glibc tweak in modern puppies. There is a segmentation fault. Current firefox correctly displays the site.

I'm also doing a "contributed build" for the mainline (SSE2) linux 32-bit "unstable" version. This is the latest code, which will be part of the next version. It'll be posted in the Pale Moon forum thread https://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.ph ... 2&start=20 The tarball can be found in the ftp directory listing ftp://contrib:get@ftp.palemoon.org/32bi ... ble-Linux/ Try that on a Pentium 4 or higher machine to see if it helps.watchdog wrote:EDIT: further trials prove the crashing of the mainline sse2 palemoon 27.4.2 on that site even installed without glibc tweak in modern puppies. I hope to get a new version uploaded today. I'm going away for a vacation on the 18th to the 22nd, so I won't be around to answer questions.
Tried this myself in 4.31 on my T42 and it was fine on that site.watchdog wrote:I am in puppy 4.31 (zigbert's Stardust 013) and my palemoon 27.4.2 glibc219 tweaked. I am experimenting the first crash of palemoon on a particular italian site:

Yes, it is working also for me now. It was out for palemoon for one or a couple of days. Bad html code, I think.Robert123 wrote: http://www.mercatoliberonews.com/

Thanks Walter, I'll try your build. But the problem I reported is now solved: I think bad html code was responsible for making crash palemoon.Walter Dnes wrote: I'm also doing a "contributed build" for the mainline (SSE2) linux 32-bit "unstable" version.
