How to update libavcodec on slacko 5.5 ?

#1 Post by Kicalaf »

Hi guys,

please, is there anyone who can help me, because I couldn't find any detailed instruction how to update libavcodec to 56 , because my firefox is showing me that libavcodec may be vunerable and can't play videos?

I have changed media.libavcodec.allow-obsolete to true , but that doesn't help anything.

I know that firefox have changed since the version 50, but how now to make my firefox play such videos?

My PPM can't find libavcodec that I can update it through package manager.

Thanks in advance very much

The libavcodec library is part of the ffmpeg package.
Not sure if the package manager will offer an upgrade of this, but it may do.
It is a core multimedia library and a number of programs are likely to depend on it.
Upgrading to a different number carries the risk of breaking some of these programs.
You can compile any version you want fairly easily.
http://ffmpeg.org
Make sure to configure building of the shared libraries.
You can install different versions in the same Puppy if you take steps (eg environment variables) to make sure everything has the correct libs available. I did this with VLC in StretchPup. VLC actually needed an older ffmpeg as it would not compile against the newer system libraries.

On way is to symlink the new version to the old one.
One by one. There is a topic about that.. I give you where if i found it.. fast.
Last firefox 50 ? use and older version, told us French Ubuntu users.

Thanks so much OscarTalks for your answer, but honestly, among all of these you have been writing, I have understood only that the libavcodec library is part of the ffmpeg package.

My knowledge is so poor definitely, that I am only know what I am missing at puppy linux , generally speaking, (and waiting for the prepared pets, etc), but don't know by my self to create anything, lol

Pelo

If you can't upgrade the libavcodec library and it has been stated there are other programs that depend on it. Do the following in Firefox about:config
In case you can not upgrade your libav, you can force firefox to use the old version by changing this setting (-> about:config) :

media.libavcodec.allow-obsolete

Thanks guys,

I am using the latest Firefox. And have already went on about:config and toggled obsolete on true. No changes.

I can watch youtube, but can't pivotshare videos, because of I am asking this specifically.

I think that slacko have some two versions after 5.5. I think 5.7 is the last one Pelo ;)

I have installed Slacko 6.32 on USB, to try, but still the same situation with firefox 38.8.0 ESR.

Is there any command in terminal with which I can check which libavcodec is installed?

Also how to update 38.8.0 firefox ESR, no new updates is available.

Thanks in advance ;)

Today I have tried tahrpup 6.0.6 on USB and it is ok now with libavcodec. PPM is recognizing immediately libavcodec.
