Xenialpup64 7.0.8.6
Frugal
Save folder.

Desktop calc icon.
Click on and Gnumeric spreadsheet opens.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

On 7.0.8.6 pmcputemp still gives a constant and erroneous 40 degrees C
report in the tray. I always delete it from Startup.

No choice any more to use SNS instead of Frisbee for my wireless, though
Frisbee is working ok for me.

Hi all,

Hey bigpup or artown, are either of you seeing this if you do a 'frugal' install of 7.0.8.6?

1) Brand spanking new install, frugal.

2) Boot it up

3) Do the welcoming screen and set a few required things. Hit reboot.

4) Up pops the creation of a savefile. Go through the process and do it.

5) Then, reboot happens, arrive back at the desktop----and here's the problem, just like I noted back with 7.0.8--xenialpup64 boots up, heads to the desktop, and immediately you are faced with no "savefile" icon despite having just went thru the process to create & confirm it (notice it in the pic below!). Worse, with the reboot you cannot even set anything in pupeventmanager choosing your preferred save-session mode (again, notice in the pic the selection box is greyed out as if a savefile doesn't exist, but it does, and 7.0.8.6 will save to that savefile at that greyed-out, locked 30 min mark---I watched it do so just a few minutes ago).

It seems this bug was never addressed. Just to make sure, I did not 1, not 2, but 3 different 'frugal' installs of 7.0.8.6, and it did this same error on all three. Then, to quadruple check, I re-downloaded the ISO, did a 4th 'frugal' install, and bingo, still the exact same error.

This is sort of a major PITA, and Phil needs to get it corrected (I did work arounds in 7.0.8 & corrected it, but this shouldn't still be happening in a new, updated ISO).

Surely, I can not have received 2 bad ISO downloads of 7.0.8.6 for this to be happening again  . Remember, this happened across 3 different machines tested with the new 7.0.8.6, two attempts on amd64 machines and one attempt on an intel core i3---machines where most all my numerous 'frugal' puppies run wild & mostly-error free.

Am I the only one seeing this...if so, it must be Halloween voodoo beads rubbing time

[UPDATE: Solved. Moral of story: when you're hopping between machines, and using different devices to test frugal booting, make darn sure you pay attention is you use "pmedia=....." in your grub4dos menu.lst entry. Pmedia=atahd when in fact you are on a USB (and thus should say "pmedia=usbflash") will give you the behavior described above. Now this makes me wonder if I did the same thing many months ago with 7.0.8...ugh  )

Fresh manual frugal install. Display, sound and internet working on initial boot. installed a few things,no problem.
No problem with the correct temp showing in the tray and no problem with a save folder.

More testing later.......

Dang, ok, am going to download the ISO (and md5sum check it again) and see if the third time is a charm.

I've never had any problems with save files or save folders, though I only
use save folders nowdays. I only use frugals to hard drive.

Since a manual frugal install takes about a minute I did another and went with a Ext4 savefile this time.No problem, rebooted with a working savefile.

PUP_LAYER='/pup_ro2'
#The partition that has the xenialpup64save file is mounted here...

I think the "calc" icon on Desktop has always opened Gnumeric, at least on all the puppies I've tried since I started using puppy. The first time I clicked it I thought it was a bit strange, but not really I guess. One of the icons probably should open Gnumeric, I suppose, and back then the icon looked like a graph and spreadsheet (and I believe still in Slacko) so it was a bit more obvious what calc did. I guess the "S icon" in Xenialpup stands for Spreadsheet, or "something" or "secret" or "surprise" ? I think S is one of the english letters with the most words so it could almost anything you want to fit I guess... if it even is an S (or maybe 5?) :)

From The Free On-line Dictionary of Computing (18 March 2015) [foldoc]:
Calc

<tool, mathematics> An extensible, advanced desk calculator
and mathematical tool written in {Emacs Lisp} by Dave
Gillespie <daveg@synaptics.com>. Calc runs as part of {GNU
Emacs}. You can use Calc as only a simple four-function
calculator, but it also provides additional features including
choice of algebraic or {RPN} ({stack}-based) entry,
logarithms, trigonometric and financial functions, {arbitrary
precision}, complex numbers, vectors, matrices, dates, times,
infinities, sets, algebraic simplification, differentiation,
and integration.
That is what the icon looks like.
A desk calculator.
Well, I guess with some of the icon theme sets, it does.
Some icon sets use a desk calculator looking icon and some use a spreadsheet looking one.

If it is going to open Gnumeric. To me the icon should be named Gnumeric or spreadsheet and have an icon like a spreadsheet.
Here is example from different icon theme sets.

Yet another puppy beta, and this one works fine too.

For those with Broadcom hardware, here is the wl wifi driver, and here is the 1570 webcam driver for XenialPup (or kernel 4.9.58 amd64)
The wl wifi driver was compiled from the ubuntu zesty sources (Xenial sources are for k4.4 and will fail on XenialPup) and the bcwc webcam driver from this github source.

Save folder.

I can live with this and have been for some time.
Just wonder why it is required in Xenialpup.

Video card Nvidia GeForce GTX 970.

Initial first boot, have to use nouveau.modeset=0 to get to visible desktop.

In testing Zestypup and Artfulpup this is not needed.
They initially boot to a working desktop. No added options needed.

Something you may want to look into.
hi bigpup,

i've no idea why this is required with xenialpup64. do you need to use the same option with xenialpup32 bit as well? if so can you try the 32bit xenialpup with artfuls kernel. just copy the vmlinux & zdrv.sfs over renaming the zdrv.sfs

i've also sent you a PM

hi mavrothal,

7.0.8.5 was good apart from the rox pinboard bug when changing wallpapers. but after being away for so long and the build now requiring new .deps i thought it better to post 7.0.8.6 as a beta first. prior to that there were some really bed issues with the system freezing

i'll be updating the 32bit xenialpup this coming week and if nothing major is discovered it'll be a 32&64bit 7.0.9 release..... finally

thanks for the drivers

the calc icon has always opened gnumeric
Well, in Linux it has always been called a directory, but it seems a folder is now just as usable a name.

Just because it always was, does not make it always so, for ever more!

calc
There are other Puppy versions that use spreadsheet as the icon label.
There is a calc in the menu.
menu>Business>Ycalc
That is no spreadsheet program.

I understand using the word calc.
That is a very technical term for the software code for the type of calculation it does.
The name has a history in Linux software naming.
But it is still using a icon that is named spread for spreadsheet.

If I told anybody at work to go work it up in a calc program. I would get a blank stare.

If I told them to give me a spreadsheet on it. It would be understood!

OK I fixed it for me.

As far as I know there is no "puppy 7" ever released.
Puppy 7.0.9 or any other point release as "official" after puppy 6.3 would be confusing and may go unnoticed.

You might want to discuss it with Mick and probably PB regarding release schedule and versioning.

Hello! On my PC, I have used Puppy Linux as my only operating system since version 5.2.8.
I am currently using QuirkyXerus64-8.3 and XenialPup64 7.0.8.6. and both systems work
perfectly. About XenialPup64 7.0.8.6, for me it serves as a final release.
