Is there a different location for the flash-player lib in Gentoo?

Actually, I believe that Pale Moon uses a different directory than Firefox. See https://linux.palemoon.org/help/faq/#noplugins

My plugins do not show up in Pale Moon.

Pale Moon checks for plugins in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins. Some distros place the plugins in /usr/lib/nsbrowser/plugins. If this is the case and Pale Moon is unable to find your plugins, you can do the following to symlink to the actual plugin directory:

cd /usr/lib
mkdir mozilla
cd mozilla
ln -s ../nsbrowser/plugins plugins

If instead you need to put your plugins in a custom location, you can export MOZ_PLUGIN_PATH=:...

You can also put these export statements in /etc/profile, should you need them to work for all users.

Do you have to use an ebuild to install it? If you download and unpack the flash_player_npapi_linux.i386.tar.gz, the contents can be just moved or copied into their respective folders.

The reason I mentioned the ebiuld is that it implies ">=sys-libs/glibc-2.4" is a dependancy for the latest Flash. The glibc bundled with Lucid Puppy may not be enough.

I have switched back to my former PaleMoon 27.4.2 setup, because I have a problem in 27.5.1 with some websites with no response to mouseclicks, and no functional login window. I also had a funny problem with Youtube; no functional back and forward arrows! Impossible to replay a movie!
I am trying to find out if there are some 'self-made' modifications related to the latest version which make things go bad.

The quick-n-dirty way to find out is to install 27.5.1 and run...

My Palemoons are official out-of-the-box versions, but I have made a lot of modifications in prefs.js and xulstore.json, usually by modifications in about:config.

The only file you need to play flash is libflashplayer.so itself in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins.
The rest is decoration or docs.

I have been able to download files from Youtube with the 'best' downloader and then play with mplayer full-screen, same
result as with smtube (360p is the max my 2004 laptop can handle with any method) but far more youtube videos are
available than with smtube. I use mplayer without X, saving memory and CPU, but 720p is still too fast for the cpu.
Google seems not to offer 480p resolution at Youtube. It never works with smtube (goes to 240p).

I do not know if movgrab can still download 480p.

Just type in the URL from lynx or links, or use splitvt to copy between terminal screens. I can play videos on a 233MHz
laptop with 96MB RAM, in low resolution.

Vidmate on an android phone has 480p.

You need an mplayer with svga support
mplayer -vo help

The 2010 version (probably comes with lupu 2016) has it.

fbdev may also work (you need a kernel that supports it - lupu2016 but not sulu, tahr)

On my laptop mplayer is automatically fullscreen but I think it varies depending on the video chip.

PS: I recommend to start with a new profile. The old profile made palemoon 27.6.0 crashing on my PC. You can copy the extensions from old profile in the new profile and you'll be asked to install again them.

Thanks for the heads up on this. I have updated my sse 32bit version. I believe this to be the best browser when using limited hardware and older style pups and it can be updated to use the latest version. Great.

Walter Dnes just quickly fixed the problem of Youtube playing at only 360p in Palemoon with Lupu and Tahr Puppy.
We have an older libavcodec. Change the libavcodec with the string obsolete in it from false to true.
Youtube was only allowing auto (480p) on my 1GHz 2001 Pentium III.
I now see 144p (ideal for the PIII), 240p, 360p, 480p, 720p, and sometimes higher.
Smtube no longer plays many of the Youtube videos (and never at 480p - a bug?).

Seamonkey and Firefox ESR apparently do not use libavcodec and work without this setting change.

I asked if Walter could make TRUE the default setting in his SSE version (which works with puppy linux -
the official version is using or will use incompatible later libraries).

I don't think the developers would like having the source tweaked. But there is an official way of doing about:config overrides on a profile-by-profile basis. In your profile directory create a file called "user.js", and insert the lines...

As of yesterday mid evening, youtube was no longer working with smtube.
It worked with palemoon but only at 360p even with the 'obsolete' line set to true not false.

Today I can't even get it to work with palemoon (nothing happens when I click on a video), or with youtube-dl (wrong parameter). It does work with Firefox 45.8 ESR, and with vidmate on an Android 4 phone.

Can someone confirm?

I just tested in Win7 andeven if I accept all javascript I just get the endless circle chasing its tail instead of a video playing in youtube. Chrome 41 works in Win7 with youtube. Firefox 45.8 ESR in lupu. Pale Moon is identifying as Firefox (by default).

This trick by nic007 usually works for me but you have to use Firefox 28 to do it (in Palemoon it only half works - showing the menu but doesn't save the video when clicking on that option, and in Firefox 52ESR it doesn't work at all, at least for me)

edit: Just tested again, this trick still works in Firefox 28 and not in Palemoon

In Lupu 2016 and Tahr 6.0.5 (at least on this laptop from 2004) I can play Youtube videos with Pale Moon 27.6.2 but only at 360p. In Xenial, with PM 27.6.1, they play at all resolutions.

I changed the line in about:config with 'obsolete' in it from False to True in order to get all the resolutions.

Has anyone else had this problem? I think it started recently.

I think Pale Moon 27.6 plays h264/mp4 video with the help of libavcodec existing in the OS.
When libavcodec is "obsolete," Pale Moon does not use it but plays the video with VP8 codec, unless "allow obsolete" is true. It seems that not all the resolutions are available when the video is played with vp8 codec.

Walter Dnes said to change the line to TRUE to get the other resolutions and it worked until a few days ago. Now I get only 360p with it TRUE, same as FALSE. Please confirm. I have ImageBlock, Adblock Plus (to try to stop Youtube ads), Noscript and a Youtube video downloader.

Another add-on disabled Youtube entirely (something about cinema mode).

New Moon 27.7 for XP (PaleMoon unofficial for XP and Win2K) with three extra DLLs needed for H64 plays all the resolutions. MSFN site.

Maybe libavcodec needs updating?

This is in Lucid Puppy 2016. Firefox 45.8 ESR displays all the resolutions.
Some sites are jerky at 360p and I want the 240p option. On faster computers I would like 480p (not available with smtube).

Disabling adblock and imageblock and a youtube downloader makes no difference.

Total cpu usage for 360p is just about 100%, which makes for jerky video.
240p would fix things.

This is a 1.6GHz 2004 HP zv5000 laptop. Most of my laptops are slower but worked fine with smtube 15 or 17 and lucid puppy 2016 until Youtube changed.

Smtube 18 works with Tahr puppy and mplayer 2015 or VLC (smoothly, on this 2004 laptop) but Tahr video does not work on at least two of my laptops (or Slacko or Xenial on the one I tested on).

Temporary solutions: Palemoon with Tahr puppy or Windows (Maybe smplayer still works with XP?).
