ohhhh crap.
so this is why they warned us not to host code on github. they did though, they said if you host code on github, sooner or later youll be sorry...
*microsoft acquires github* oh, there it is!
"its a new microsoft"
*then buys linked in, nokia, github and red hat*
looks a lot like the "old microsoft" to me!
im not saying companies shouldnt buy other companies. im just saying i dont like when microsoft does it, because they dont just buy stuff-- they buy it and then often screw it up (skype) or kill it after a couple years.
i dont like google or facebook any more than microsoft though. i do not run them on an arm, containered on a server farm, i do not like them on pcs, just keep them all away from me. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_Eggs_and_Ham
googling alternatives to github... (j/k, using duckduckgo.) couldnt they have done this on april 1st instead?
"microsoft <3 linux"
hey, dont touch me!
"microsoft <3 linux"
get off!
"microsoft <3 linux"
eww, eww!
"you know you want microsoft, linux"
no, no, no!

All that work the users put in that was open-sourced... has just vanished. No doubt no one got paid a nickel for all that WORK. See ya, wouldn't wanna be ya!
I think REN (Ren&Stimpy) sums it up nicely.
Slackware just posted June 1st... Git 2.14.4 "The stupid content tracker"
patches/packages/git-2.14.4-i486-1_slack14.0.txz: Upgraded.
This update fixes security issues:
Submodule "names" come from the untrusted .gitmodules file, but we
blindly append them to $GIT_DIR/modules to create our on-disk repo
paths. This means you can do bad things by putting "../" into the
name. We now enforce some rules for submodule names which will cause
Git to ignore these malicious names (CVE-2018-11235).
Credit for finding this vulnerability and the proof of concept from
which the test script was adapted goes to Etienne Stalmans.
It was possible to trick the code that sanity-checks paths on NTFS
into reading random piece of memory (CVE-2018-11233).
Credit for fixing for these bugs goes to Jeff King, Johannes
Schindelin and others.

i dont think its that bad yet. the acquisition isnt complete, i dont think it would look good for microsoft at all if they actually pulled the plug right away.8Geee wrote:All that work the users put in that was open-sourced... has just vanished. but a lot of people are going to be moving from there. notabug.org is the best alternative ive found so far. i hope to find more options this week. you can still download your stuff as a zip and use github-- REAL github users (not me) can probably git clone whatever command like usual. but im not staying with microsoft. giving them root access to my operating system? thats why i switched! funny pic though, thats hilarious for dark humour.
Hahaha.
You're surprised? Seriously?
The infiltration runs deeper than you think.
Here is more surprise for you: "git" (the key software that is being used by "github") key developers are MS employees.
Yes, that "git" which is used to manage Linux kernel sources, that "git" that was originally created by Linus Torvalds. That one. Is now maintained by MS, more or less.
Don't believe me? Check it for yourself: https://github.com/Microsoft/git.
And if you need to hear directly from the horse's mouth, here is the full banter (note that they didn't bother to hide the fact anymore):

http://www.openwall.com/lists/musl/2016/10/05/5
http://www.openwall.com/lists/musl/2016/10/05/12
Notice the dates.
And do you think their infiltration stops at git? Hahaha
______________
As for github founders (not "developers" - the developers are as f**d up as anyone else), they just want to cash in and get out. There is no hypocrisy - is there anyone here who don't like loads and loads of cash? Github is a business. People treat it a like a public service. And then be surprised when they sell out.
Here's some refresher: In the beginning there was sourceforge.net. When sourceforge sold out, people scurried to google code. But the fun didn't last long; google code was shutdown (hazard a guess!) and people scurried over to the new king of hill, github. But now the king is ownzd ... rinse and repeat.
People readily hand down $millions to buy products that don't exist in kickstarter. But nobody is willing to share a few dimes to pay for an agnostic open-source code sharing platform. Ahh, the joy of humanity
Here is my advice. Ride it like the wind. Enjoy it while you can. But realise it is for what it is and don't lose your vigilance. Lest you fall off the cliff without even knowing. For everything is ephemeral.

whats the expiry on blaming people for buying out sellouts and patent fraud? i mean if you get people (under threat of legal action) to sign confessions that yes, they took your "property" (its not microsofts property, the patent system is just broken) when actually it was written by non-microsoft authors all over the world--tallboy wrote:You cannot blame Microsoft, they just do what they have always done.
we can totally blame microsoft and suse and github and everybody responsible. hard to say who i dislike more here, github or suse-- its probably suse though. (ongoing, i still blame them.)
i even wrote github a nice letter when i deleted my account and they asked for feedback. "youre going to get a lot of mean letters, i just thought id say thank you for the great service you provided until now... thats a lot of money, i hope you put some of it to good causes (hint: not the bill and melinda gates foundation!)"
they replied that theyre still committed to the open source, "developer-first" ethos. im guessing "developer-first" means "giant company first" though. im technically a developer, they certainly didnt put me first. can you imagine how pissed i would be right now if id ever sent them money? (i have funded some floss-related stuff and commercial hosting, even the fsf-- my github use was pretty sparse.)
"hey i just closed my github, cause
a money maker thats all it was (ha)
if you make money i wont fuss (but)
without freedom youre just a cuss (hey)
you can buy diamonds and gold with your super-sized
enterprise
compromise
but dont try to sell me any of your lies, lies, lies
cause you deny
what i hold high"
this sort of infiltration people should watch out for-- theres not much you can do about it except this:"git" (the key software that is being used by "github") key developers are MS employees.
* when they start adding lots of goofy obfuscation, stop approving the commits (you can tell how little i know about git when i say "approving the commits" like some floss developers grandparents)
"you kids and your gitbuckets! i bet youve never even used a floppy drive!"
* fork if necessary, because microsoft devs probably wont join multiple forks (though nothing actually stops them from doing so.)
when a company has an actual playbook on how to fight free software, letting them in is a very silly thing to do. that said-- a zero-tolerance policy on someone who formerly worked from microsoft is probably unnecessary. and i say that as someone who doesnt trust microsoft even a little. theyve never earned it and they really couldnt, without actually thinking theyve changed. (which is also a very silly thing to do.)
@nosystemd - it's not that easy.
That whole banter I referred above actually triggered me to think and write four-parter articles here: http://lightofdawn.org/blog/?viewDetailed=00182. I've a fifth part which I haven't uploaded yet.

This is scary and worrying of course. I do use google services a lot, email and google apps business site, so in that sense if any big corporation took over github I wish it had been Google. However, Google has a bad habit of suddenly closing down services... I have never seen Microsoft doing that - old hotmail is still going strong (my original email account there still active). I just hoping the end result of the takeover will change nothing, in any bad way, about github hosting and operation - nerve wracking though. It is such a huge open-source resource nowadays. Fact is, Microsoft has the clout to takeover most things (maybe even Apple one day?...).
No point complaining further about them - just have to hope thy respect the open-source community though or of course alternative breakaway git type repositories will become more prevalent (but git is becoming a Microsoft product anyway). When, I wonder, will Microsoft own the Linux kernel...
We see the future, and it looks bleak. We live in a commercialised world and the past few decades may just have been an open-source free-as-in-beer bubble. I blame Hamadoudou for his free passenger-style customer attitude - soon he and all of us may have to pay... Plus side would be if anyone doing useful development actually earned some non-Pelo-style reward for their countless hours of work - but that is unlikely aside from click-through advertising models...

Good to see you posting, I was wondering were you went. Being busy with life is good though.jamesbond wrote:@nosystemd - it's not that easy.

I read those four posts when you posted, I also tried to comment but I don't know where my comments went.
I totally agree with what you said.
I was a user and fan of Cyanogen, Microsoft joined then and boom.
That's why I was also worried when I read Microsoft became platinum member of Linux foundation.
Waiting for your fifth post.
They shut down the MSN Messenger service in favor of Skype's messaging services (I preferred the former, of course)... and then proceeded to 'improve' Skype so much I can't even use it because I'm not running a 64-bit version of Linux.wiak wrote:I have never seen Microsoft doing that - old hotmail is still going strong (my original email account there still active).
I don't think Skype's as suited to conference IMing or brainstorming with a group, but that could be just me.

If Pidgin at least had native Skype text-message support, I wouldn't mind.

I don't even use skype on my windows 8.1 machine because it is always crashing. Microsoft added too much bloat to skype and got rid of msn messenger which was much lighter weight.Makoto wrote:They shut down the MSN Messenger service in favor of Skype's messaging services (I preferred the former, of course)... and then proceeded to 'improve' Skype so much I can't even use it because I'm not running a 64-bit version of Linux.wiak wrote:I have never seen Microsoft doing that - old hotmail is still going strong (my original email account there still active).

Microsoft has to get the free code from someplace.
Do you expect them to pay for it?
Affect on Woof-CE?
Windows will get more like Puppy Linux.
Soon to come.
WinPuppy 1.0 for phones, tablets, etc........
Maybe some Windows coders will start doing code for Puppy

The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
