OK, now we know your usb-id is 1582:6003 I can say that your device definitely has the "B" version of the zd1211 chipset. I checked the source code of the zd1211b driver, and it does define your usb-id, so the zd1211b driver SHOULD work -
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 8214#88214

... and I also suspect that the usb-storage module may be interfering. So maybe try again, diagnosing along the way -

rmmod usb-storage
modprobe zd1211b
lsmod ## to see if zd1211b module is listed, and usb-storage NOT listed
ifconfig ## to see if a network interface has been created
iwconfig ## to see if a wifi network interface has been created
dmesg ## to look for information about how the module loaded

Thanks friends
I did post a reply next day but it didnt reflect I dont know why I repeat it
After installing dotpup did get wlan0 got to wireless wizard clicked wire less botton another wizard wireless detection whatever, clicked scan finds access point ok fills all the fields automatically and rightly excet 2

1. access key (we have secure network) I fill it correct
2. network ID I dont know I leave it blank

Saved these settings. When I click use this profile shows progress bar and tries to connect to wireless hub comes back with failure notice. Whats wrong?do I need to give network id, I looked in settings in windows xp no such thing as network id, what to fill? or is it something else alltogether, its strange that it fetches all the details from access point and later fails to connect to it.

What version of the wizard are you using? the most recent versions hide NetworkID as it is a filed that is barely ever used.

You should also make sure to install the latest version of rc.network.

wow cool got it working

Disabled WEP and started working obviously does not support WEP, every boot you have to do modprobe zd1211b how to make permanent so its working right after reboot. When type of security is supported in puppy 2.13, obviously cant leave our network open to everyboy.

The zd1211b driver should support WEP. The problem might be that associated encryption modules are not loaded (or available).
Do this -

modprobe ieee80211_crypt
modprobe ieee80211_crypt_wep

... and you might as well load the WPA modules for future use -

modprobe ieee80211_crypt_tkip
modprobe ieee80211_crypt_ccmp

Of course, the zdrv file must be accessable for these modules to load.

To have the driver load at boot, add this to the end of /etc/rc.d/rc.local -

rmmod usb-storage
modprobe zd1211b

Use the Network Wizard to load the module. After it loads, it will show you a button to save the module configuration.

sorry no success

ok wlan0 botton is persistant on reboot by adding modprobe 1211b, modprobe ieeee80211_crypt and modprobe ieee80211_crypt_wep to rc.local

but still it fails to connect
lsmod shows that wep modules are loaded
rmmod usb-storage says command not found

2.13 supports Wep & as I understand, some are using wpa with a supplicant.

md_jamil,
Are you entering your WEP key as hex characters, or ASCII string (passphrase)? I think it needs to be hex characters.

Otherwise, there are some extra modules you could try to load first -

modprobe aes
modprobe arc4
modprobe crc32c

It works well with ASCII, that's how I was using it before switching to WPA, unless...

Is your ASCII key alphanumeric or does it have "funny" characters?

I haven't tested with all combinations of non alphabetic and special characters.

The key is defined in the access point, you can only connect using the key defined in the access point.

If you change the key in the access point you will have to change it in every device that connects to the access point.

We use decimal number as key, isnt the decimal number a valid hex number?

Yes, (above)

Not sure what this part is about?

md_jamil,
I suspect that all you need to do is enter "0507785131" as your WEP key.

well redid wireless security, entered pass phrase and winxp generated 10 bit hex number automatically, ok I am happy with it

rebooted with puppy entered same hex key and click use this profile, first three tries it didnt connect, on forth try it did connect and twin computer flashy did appear in the bottom right corner, not flashing though.

I then click DHCP failed to fetch anything many tries nothing.

Started anew wlan0 configuration back to sqaur one finds access point when you enter key, save and say use this profile comes back to say connection was unsuccessful. What to call it intermittant? I did modprobe aes,arc4,and crc32c no error but didnt improve anything. Stuck in same position
