Thanks for testing, gcmartin.

I will indeed "check my language" in the next issue! :D

For one thing, could you or someone suggest a "good and great motto" (or a good
source for such) in English to replace Victor Hugo's French phrase at the terminal
prompt? I think it would easy enough to change with the "replaceit" utility.

About the desktop: you will notice that any Puppy displays the desktop correctly only
after the "FIRST RUN" parameters have been filled. It's simply more noticeable on
this Pup, so I'll try to tone that down.

Have you tried the "compass" ("boussole") menu? (Top right icon, not quite in the
corner). Was it useful?

Hello again gc.

About your iso burn:
I suspect that /mnt/Laptop/ is NOT a local drive? That could be it.

To properly burn an iso, the iso has to be on a partition on the same machine as
the DVD burner. If the iso is not on a local partition, milliseconds take their toll.

I mean if the CD/DVD buffer is not filled in a certain amount of time (counted in
milliseconds), it won' t burn anything. (My understanding; science may explain it
differently.)

I use this line in a terminal all the time:

Code: Select all

growisofs -dvd-compat -Z /dev/sr0=/mnt/local_drive/File_Name_of_My.iso
and it works.

Among many other causes for a bad CD/DVD burn:
* a bad disc (too old, unreliable brand, or too many re-writes on that RW);
-- If it's a pre-used DVDRW, put the disc in the tray, wait for it to end spinning,
and type in a terminal:

Code: Select all

dvd+rw-format -lead-out /dev/sr0
If that's not the right command to refresh your disc, the dvd+rw-format utility will offer
two other choices for you to try. If it is, it will simply obey the command and reformat
the disc.

If the disc is really bad, it will issue a message such as "This disc is not a DVD or
Blue-Ray media" (not verbatim).

If it's a completely new RW disc, it needs an initial formatting. If such is the case, the
utility will tell you as well and perform it.

OR

* a bad iso (due to a faulty download, perhaps?)
-- To know if the iso file is valid, try double-clicking on it (mounting it). If it fails, it's
bad. Very simple. And then unfortunately, you have to get another copy.

I hope this helps. BFN.

Thx. Your methods circumvented the issue I had. Seems that Zigbert's PBurn is not affected in the same way. It has always worked for me no matter where the file existed, physically.

I'll continue to test other features of the system.

File searches are very fast in this system!

You might want to try this.

The system should have booted to the FirstRUN utility. There you can set a few of your localization needs. If you reset the Hostname to one you like, it will restart your desktop with most attributes set.

Hope this helps

Hi jlst.

Thanks for the feedback.

Glad you like the interface. Also glad that it boots to your desktop; I have to type
'xwin' at every boot on my computer.

Yes, it starts out with my French-Canadian parameters, but you can easily change
them to your keyboard and country: use the initial set-up panel to advantage. It's
no different than when other Puppies starts with Australian or US settings.

About the keyboard, if your settings don't seem to be recognized, there's a
qc.sh script in /root/Startup (symlinked to /root/my-applications/bin). It forces X to
accept the French-French or the French-Canadian keyboard. It was originally
written by French member Médor a few years ago, but I adapted it to my "fr-
legacy" keyboard.

Recently I adapted it some more so it limits itself to French keyboards, but with a
structure open to other keyboard maps. If you have a problem with keyboard
recognition, perhaps you can insert a line in that script to "force" recognition of your
national keyboard. Just a thought.

@all
I spent the day "separating the languages" in conky, the jwm menu, other related
stuff. Nothing big, only a lot of attention to details. I should be able to upload a
corrective *.pet archive tomorrow.

Hello all.

Here is the "better-language-separation" pet I was talking about.

Once this package is installed -- as a regular pet --, English-speakers should have
an entirely English jwm menu, an entirely English conky, and so on. Same in
reverse for the French language.

I have also included in this pet a replacement for osmo in the form of a gnumeric
template for "Getting Things Done" (GTD), the famous organizing system.

I got that template from its author, David Fisco, a rather well-known Gentoo
developer, back in the day when the micro-business thread was active, 3-4 years
ago. The former osmo icon should change to a "GTD" icon on the desktop.

(Just to be clear: David Fisco is only the programmer of a GTD workbook.
David Allen is the author of the Getting Things Done (GTD) methodology.)

Thanks for testing. Your feedback is always appreciated.

BFN.

Edit:
I uploaded a new better-language-separation archive. In it, I added a "pinstall.sh" script
in the pet archive, so that the old scripts for conky and the ROX-panel at the right are
moved out of the way. Sorry for the previous inconvenience.

Once you have installed this corrective pet, go back to the initial black console with Ctrl-
Alt-Backspace and type "xwin <Enter>" for the changes to take effect. Thanks.

Hello again.

It's really easy now to change the motto used for the terminal prompt. There's a little
text file in /root called .phrases-EN. Open it and follow the instructions.

It's so easy that your real problem is rather: finding a good motto or proverb!

Similarly, if you wish to change the words in the conky panel, there's a little file
called .conky-2l...-EN in /root. Re-work that one. Changing this one is more
complicated, since you need to know the conky codes a bit.

musher0, I just tested again, well I actually made manual changes to reach the desktop, but I didn't say that before hahaha..

I just tried xorgwizard, I chose the correct driver, but the system freezed after showing the message that it works.

I already told this many times, these 2 settings in /etc/X11/xorg.conf-auto-pc really do not help sometimes...

Code: Select all

	HorizSync 35-81
	VertRefresh 59-76
xorg is wise enough to choose working values for those settings. I always have those 2 commented out:

Code: Select all

#	HorizSync 35-81
#	VertRefresh 59-76
---

It looks like my script might not be needed anymore (but i'm not sure), I also have a more advanced version that I haven't published, you can safely delete setup-netsound and setup_network_sound for the next build.

I added some changes to 10alsa, so you might want to check woof-ce, although I'm not sure if my changes will ever be merged:

https://github.com/puppylinux-woof-CE/woof-CE/pull/738

The Multiple Sound Card Wizard keeps popping up every startup

Thank you very much, jlst.

I'll include your changes to the org.conf in the next build.

I'll do a couple of tests with and without your setup scripts, to make sure.

I'll also look up your "10alsa" in the github shortly. The Multiple Sound Card Wizard
popping up at each startup boot is an annoyance, isn't it?

Hello.

In case someone ever needs an "emergency" pupsave for our alpha DPup, here's one!

Not that anyone should need it, the pupsave creation works fine in this Pup, -- so it's
probably useless, and hopefully it will never be used --, but I'm a little paranoid and
over-protective by nature! ;)

Unzip it twice in any partition, and you get a 512 Mb ready-made wheezysave pupsave
file usable on the next boot of this alpha DPup. Use only if you're stuck.

Hello all.

Can anybody confirm that this dpw-alpha1 pup cannot save its session to CD or DVD?

I tried and I failed, but the results of only one person don't count!

If it turns out that it can't save to CD/DVD, what do you suggest we do?
1) Reinstate the function or
2) leave it be?

Thanks in advance for your tests and answers.

Hello all.

FYI:
I asked here a general question
-- that affects the development of this particular alpha.

Hello people.

Here is the latest stable openssl, openssl-1.0.2f, as an sfs that our favorite pooch :) ,
dpw-3.14.56.1, should recognize and load automatically at boot:
https://www.adrive.com/public/bnkRT5/op ... 4.56.1.sfs

You should put this sfs in the same folder as your pupsave. I decided in favor of an sfs
format because this utility is rather big. As an sfs, it does not weigh down the pupsave.

If you need this security utility in *.pet archive format instead, or as an sfs for another
Puppy, please see here.

Hello again, people.

I mentioned templates earlier. You can save yourself a lot of time using them. Many of
them are free. It the formatting is not too involved, abiword should be able to load them
and then you can make the necessary edits for your needs.

Here's a good place to start your search for docx templates.

Hello again!

I promise that this will my last broadcast of the day! :)

A couple of people have PM'd me to report a bug with the mouse pad on their
portables. We will eventually visit that issue. In the meantime, may I suggest that you
try the following:

I have tested dpw on an HP Invent portable and yes, the mouse pad seemed dead.
However, when I plugged in a usb mouse, it worked fine.

So maybe try our alpha pooch with a real usb mouse for now?

@jlst:

Concerning the last part of your message here, about the sound card:

not using your script leaves the "sound card" and the "sound device" on, so when you
play music, the sound gets echoed from one to the other, which is not pleasant.

I'll leave your script in for now.

Hello all.

Our Alpha Pooch has a new devx, here:

This devx updates the previous one to include the headers, etc., provided in file
libc6-dev_2.13-38+deb7u9_i386.deb, dated Dec. 23, 2015, from:
http://ftp.debian.org/debian/pool/main/e/eglibc. So this update is quite recent.

I added to it the Tiny C Compiler, which has a very good reputation for test-
compiling short C programs. It compiles +/- 10 times faster than gcc, apparently.
I am not a C programmer myself, but given the positive reports about it, I thought
it might help some people.

Please put the previous devx in a safe place, don't throw it away yet -- until this
update is tested a few times, and we have a couple of test reports. I know it's
unusual to ask Puppyists to test a devx, but if you can, it'll be greatly appreciated.

I did test it myself, compiling urxvt-9.19 yesterday evening, and this urxvt works
fine: I've been using it all day today.

But as I said before, a test by one person doesn't mean much. With two tests,
you get at least an idea of the package's behavior. The more tests, the better, of
course, but If at minimum two tests show similar results, you're on safer grounds
to say anything about the performance of the package.

Thanks in advance. BFN.
