Puppy 4.2Beta Seamonkey Bugs & Fixes
Fault with CUPS ?
Installed printer - all worked nicely. Then noticed CPU usage was at 100 percent and staying there. I manually killed the process and CPU usage returned to normal. Process name usr/sbin/cupsd.
Machine, CPU 2.7 gig, 1 gig RAM. Runs Puppy 4.0, 4.1.1, 4.1.2 and now frugal install of 4.2beta.
Am currently downloading a torrent with transmission, emailing with thunderbird and surfing with Seamonkey. And using open office 3 sfs.
Prob when starting cups - forgot the login info and so started it up a second time to read the login info. Closed that window and went back to the original. Printer seemed to install ok but not there when I reopen open office...ok it is available in abiword and open office (why the delay I wonder?) but not printing...message...Epson Stylus Color 740 - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.3Idle - "/usr/lib/cups/filter/pstoraster failed"
update - happened again after opening printer wizard and using printer management to restart the job - which failed to print again.
Otherwise all running well!!

seamonkey mail and news
@ttuuxx - were you intending to do a .pet for seamonkey mail/news for the repo to complement the beautiful job you did of the browser?? please...grovel grovel!
Since hiawatha is out of 4.2 now, I thought I would make a preconfigured .sfs and .pet of PuppyLinux Hiawatha/Mysql/PHP to make a PLHMP rather than a Linux Apache Mysql PHP - LAMP package. Hiawatha does all that Apache does but with a fraction of the resources (the puppy way) and is less insecure. Should throw in phpMyAdmin and PPLOG too or maybe prit's PHP copy.

G'day,
I'd like to second Growler's request for an improved Seamonkey Mail for 4.2.
For me, Seamonkey is a Mail program that just happens to have a html editor and browser tacked on.
It took me a while to replace the Mail-less Monkey in the Alpha3 with 1.1.14.
A revised Seamonkey 1.1.14 pet would do.

guys if we included seamonkey mail, we would loose around 2MB compressed, man that would be a lot of programs, I could compile one, but it would be best for a repo thing, Really Claws mail is more superior than Seamonkey mail due to the fact its updated regularly, it has a lot of nice plugins and its about 1/4 the size. If you want a html editor install it has more features than composer, its the only one left being still deveoped, composer and NVU both have stopped updates and Komopzer is the one which took over.

Re: seamonkey mail and news
Don't let me stop you creating the sfs, but Hiawatha and PPLOG are not really out of 4.2 ... I just removed them temporarily to see how tight I could get the beta1 and just didn't slip them back in before releasing.growler wrote:Since hiawatha is out of 4.2 now, ...[snip]... Now that ttuuxxx has found us some extra space, and is working to find us more by recompiling progs left, right and centre, I'd expect there's even less reason than before to drop the combo, so they will be there in Beta2/RC1.

There are some reasons:
- Barry made impressive lean packages
- older version are just smaller in some cases
- Barry packaged just the part he needs out of a bigger package
These things are hard to handle (for me), especially in case of packages for the live-cd.
So i got some actual packages i've not uploaded yet for size reasons (e.g. bdb, iptables). i also have to test an actual gparted, and want to look into the actual sqlite3.
So there will definitely be more packages from my part.
To have a realistic view at the greens and blacks and reds in distrowatch, please look at their number one: http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=ubuntu
by the way: what about http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/gnome/sources/ ... 4.7.tar.gz

i don't think that this is a very helpful statement in a community project...ttuuxxx wrote:... since it looks like were the only package providers of current software...aragon wrote:@ttuuxxx
yes, i think you're right, a little more green would help. but there is as always the size restriction. If you remember the libsamplerate-problem (100 kb v. 0.12 <=> 1 mb actual version).http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=puppy
sure something we can't update like Glibc or probably xinelib, well we could but I would have to reboot and start fresh and it could take a bit of time and testing to get it right. Wish Barry had configure notes on it
amyways of all the packages we've provided only cups will be the latest. Some of those packages are in the forum but not on the repo ,uuuummmm WhoDo are you going to compare and add some? It would look better for us to have a bit of green and not all black like DSL, lol
anyways I'll do a few.

Bonjour,
Localization of Puppy :
I want to say that there are some scripts already localized and could be included in 4.20.
- connect-wizard in addition to the network-wizard by Dougal
- chooselocale
- xorgwizard
and xwin (as they are complementary) but it seems there are issues in xwin
- remasterpup2 There is still one issue on remasterpup2 as it can't create the custom-puppy.iso on ntfs partition.
One note about ROX-Filer : missing files for localization
Cordialement

A number of these are being provided in the background by coolpup. Until you pointed out the DW package list comparison I had no idea where he was going to decide what to package next!ttuuxxx wrote:WhoDo are you going to compare and add some? Look for many of these to appear in Beta2 for the first time. A feature lock doesn't mean a package update lock (unless it breaks something in my pre-beta testing).

I have downloaded the localized scripts from your links, except xwin and remasterpup2 for the very reasons you outlined in your post. I'd rather not include problematic changes in Beta2 if there is any risk they could break something.
There will be no more than 2 Beta's at most, quickly followed by the first RC. I am conscious that we need to get the next version out before the end of March - an Easter gift for Puppyland. Any later and we risk losing the impact of the new features to other developments such as woof. The writing is already on the wall, IMHO.

Is the printing on the wall yet? I still can't print with Beta1, and I see that some other people couldn't either. All fixed for Beta2? Yes?!WhoDo wrote:The writing is already on the wall, IMHO.
By the way, does the 0pkgs_db package for Puppy 4.2 exist yet? If so, thanks in advance for letting me know where to find it!

As for 0pkgs_db-420, it won't exist until I create it. I won't create it until the package list is finalised (each package, even updates, introduces new files for the .files in the packages directory). Even when the package list is finalised, I won't create it until I find out how Barry does that quickly and easily. I refuse to manually edit hundreds of package files. I've got enough to do. When I do create it, as promised earlier, you will be the first to know.

Bug Fix?
/usr/sbin/cups_shell
These lines need to be changed to 5.2 instead of 5.0
mkdir -p /usr/share/cups/model/gutenprint/5.0
cups-genppd.5.0
rm -rf /usr/share/cups/model/gutenprint/5.0/*
The ppd files are not being generated when the user chooses to install a new printer.
FWIW I never did like this. It really slows down the load time of the cups interface.

Thanks seeker for the reminder I was going to change that when I packaged up the latest gutenprint, I even did mention that in the release notes, But it slipped my mind. I'll change it very soon.seeker wrote:Bug Fix?

WhoDo
I came across a cups xfce frontend, do we have the space for it? maybe 1.5MB I haven't completely compiled it yet, so it could be smaller, but thats a good guess. It would act more like the big distros printer installs. Also it would be nice to see what packages are being provided by coolpup for 2 reasons, So I don't waste my time compiling the same thing twice, Plus for security reasons the packages should be exposed to the general public where they could be looked at eternally. Not to say he's doing anything wrong, but Its just a bit different not posting them here for people to tryout and test first.

I know I'm not part of the group working on this version, very nice so far by the way, but I did try set up printing. I have an old Vectra PIII 1 GHz with 256Mb ram in my garage that I use for streaming music from the net via wireless. This beta2 was easy to get my wireless going and subsequently it was an easy task to find and install the HP all in one I have on my home network.WhoDo wrote: Printing in Beta2? I hope so. That said, though it was easy to find and looked as if everything was set up correctly I did not try to test print due to getting called away from the testing so I'll give that a go later today and report back.
Great job so far gang.

Not ATM we don't. I'll see how things progress for Beta2. My current build is exactly 100Mb, so I'm looking for at least 500Kb+ to get below the target. It would be an option for the next CE though.ttuuxxx wrote:I came across a cups xfce frontend, do we have the space for it? maybe 1.5MB I haven't completely compiled it yet, so it could be smaller, but thats a good guess. I agree with your logic but what can I do? I certainly don't think there are any security concerns but I do agree about time wasting and testing and I think it would be good if all of the repackagers could get together and allocate tasks among themselves. I'm downloading the same update sometimes 2 or 3 times from different sources and then I have to make comparisons to decide which version to include. Usually size wins but if it doesn't I'll go with the one provided to me first.ttuuxxx wrote:Also it would be nice to see what packages are being provided by coolpup for 2 reasons, So I don't waste my time compiling the same thing twice, Plus for security reasons the packages should be exposed to the general public where they could be looked at eternally. Well thats easy, make a folder on your account at puppylinux.ca and name it anything you want, upload his files in one folder, place a link at page one in your release notes, Then all we have to do is go to page one and easily find the link, have a look and then we try the packages and decide well thats good, saves me from compiling them. etc.WhoDo wrote:
