Lucid Puppy 5.0.1 - 24 May 2010
Nooby
From 499 to 500 there were a few minor changes. If you want I can provide a delta file to convert your lupu-499.iso file to the lupu-500.iso file. Note: it will not do anything but change the iso.
Cheers

Thanks MickO but I never do Delta. I always do iso. I've already dl it but not tested it.
all due to my incredible and unchanging stupidity buying the wrong hardware.
Als I fail to following good advices in the software. I fail to get local radio going in Lupu4.99 so most likely that will be the case for me in Lupu5 too.
so don't make a delta for my sake.
What I don't like about every puppy? None of them can play music videos again and again automatically. Why is that? You always have to get up out of bed and go to the Puter on other side of room and hit play.
In Windows I can set WMP or VLC whatever to loop the chosen video clip over and over and over for hours. Good for any kind of music.
What was it about VLC that we don't have it in Quirky 1.00 or Lucid Puppy 5.0? Not that I favor that player at all. Just me curious?
Thanks indeed for caring about me.

I don't think taking lots of apps out is a good idea.
No two users seem to be able to agree on which browser to include as default so there is a lot to be said for giving people the choice. I have absolutely no problem with that. If I need to add a browser to Puppy so I can browse the Web, by definition I must have access to the Web or I wouldn't feel a need to download a browser so I can browse.
A browser is just about the only app that is useless without Web-access (and even then you could look at locally stored html files). Most of the other apps will work without internet access so why should people have to have internet access to download and then use them?
Puppy can't be all things to all people (though it does a pretty fair job). Is it to be a standalone Live-CD that can be carried around and used on any computer? If everything is to be downloaded you'll have to create save-files on all the machines Puppy is used on or wait for the download, assuming all your machines have fast internet access.
What about people on dial-up? Puppy is one of the few distros that caters for lots of ancient modems.
There's nothing intrinsically wrong with the TinyPC model but is that where we wish to be heading?
Just my two (pre-decimal) pence.

I have problems with my Desktop (a Medion MD8818 with sata drives) for a long time now.dawnsboy wrote:For what it is worth the first setup was on my netbook so I decided to install on my desktop. It won't even go there. It can't find my SATA hard drive and drops out of initial ram drive console. Hmm....
Well if this is the direction Puppy is headed in, good luck. I hope that it works out for you.
Some puppies detect correctly the drives, others don't.
I can have the sata drives to be recognized by starting with acpi=off.
But I hate that as I loose the ACPI functionality.

Re: Optional extras
Lupu has a hidden Seamonkey built I is what I have heard and I tested by writing seamonkey in the console/terminal and sure there it was and loaded up too.drongo wrote: If I need to add a browser to Puppy so I can browse the Web, by definition I must have access to the Web or I wouldn't feel a need to download a browser so I can browse.
So even if one don't choose any one still have one.

It's stupid to use inferior software for ideological reasons.

Re: Lucid Puppy 5.0 - 15 May 2010
Congrats! I've played with & then used Puppy since 2.XXX. versions 3.XXX amazed me. V 431 blew my socks off. Puppy 5.0 leaves me speechless.playdayz wrote:Puppy Lucid

Lucid Puppy 5.0 is available below.

My aim is for Lucid Puppy to become a no-brainer to use (ie, no need to read the manual!). Just turn on the PC, and off you go...we're not there yet,... --BKauler
I'm no expert. I do experiment with dozens of Linux Distros every year and I've installed & used Ubuntu, Xubuntu, SUZE, Knoppix, & others but beginning with Puppy 4.31, I settled on Puppy.
I still use Windows on the occasions when I have no choice but Puppy is my daily O/S. With 431, Puppylinus has been, in my opinion, the easiest O/S to boot, install & use--certainly easier and better in many ways than Windows.
Puppy 5.00 is clearly the easiest, most efficent O/S available. I was amazed with how quickly and flawlessly it installs to & boots from USB Stick & I am delighted with the choose your browser feature --a great touch!
I am also impressed by how well Puppy transfers from one laptop to another. When I got my Thinkpad T-60, my Puppy 431 USB sticks booted right up in my T-60. All I had to do is pick my screen resolution. To my delight, 431 correctly identified my graphics card & 15" 1400 x 1050 display! The new desktop graphics produces a blow away look on my display, even better than either Win Vista Ultimate or Win 7 do!
Before going any further with Win XP Home of Google Android netbook manufacturers should seriously consider Puppy 5.00
Puppy 5.00 --one great release.

Well I tried it shortly, some of my opinions:
Browser chooser is nice, I downloaded Chrome and it worked OK, I tested some pets like pidgin 2.6.6 by wolf_pup I think it's most popular - it needed 3 libxcb libs which are available for install in PPM and after that it loads and works fine.
Booting straight to desktop is nice but if you choose to set keyboard / resolution from first dialog it throws you back to prompt and start wizards
default detected radeon driver for my gfx worked OK, not optimal though but video was fast, flash worked and everything.
Overall it's a known puppy feeling thought I think default desk apereance could have nicer setup and default console fonts are not really nice - that's generally for woof builds I think.

first-run.sh - localization, englisch, german/deutsch
Hi,
1. modified first-run.sh for localization and added german/deutsch.
english is default, other language/mo-files must be in /usr/share/locale/xx/LC_MESSAGES
Attention: first-run.sh has out-commented the if-command for testing.
2. someone told, the changes in language and timezone would not be displayed: modified
Thanks for Puppy.

lupu success giving 1366x768
I have an acer laptop with the following specs:
Acer Aspire 5535-5452
AMD Athlon 64 X2 QL-64 (2.1 GHz)
15.6" 1366x768 display
"up to 1408 MB ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics"
3 GB DDR2
320 GB HD
Super-Multi DVD drive (reads and writes DVDs)
It came with Windows Vista. Vista has since been upgraded to Windows 7. The hard drive was partitioned into a 160GB C: drive and a 160GB data partition. I reformatted the data partition and installed Ubuntu 9.4 on it (since upgraded to 9.10). I dual-boot using grub as installed by Ubuntu.
I had issues getting the full native 1366x768 resolution on this laptop using puppy 4.31. Lucid Puppy 5.0 gave me the proper full native resolution automagically - THANKS!
I use WPA for wireless. I first tried to set that up using SNS, entered my password when asked, and it initially worked and got me connected. However after saving to a new save file and rebooting, no wireless, so I tried Dougal's wizard, and that both worked the first time and also worked after reboot.
I used the quickpet icon to install Chrome, which works fine.
Haven't tried much else yet, just so glad to have the video and wireless working.
Thanks again, playdayz and 01micko and anyone else involved in this new distro.

Lucid Puppy 5.0
I think its great! Congratulations to the design team on a beautiful and professional product. Booting from live disk here, and everything LUPU has worked as it should. I have added all my favorite pets and remastered using Dougal's Pupremaster, as modified by Panzerkopf.
That said, I do have graphics problems which include weirdly transparent menus, lines across the screen that look like spider webs and areas of the screen that are not refreshed. THESE PROBLEMS HAVE NOT BEEN UNIQUE TO LUPU-500. My guess is they have something to do with XORG not playing well with my SIS Mirage2 (760) graphics card. I have had these same problems starting with Ubuntu 9.10 and Mint 8, but not Mepis 8.4.96-b432 or previous versions of Ubuntu or Mint.

What app did Barry use to create that graphic showing the history of WOOF?

Combined with Lyricue it could be lots of fun!
