not a bug

Found my problem with secure connections to DuckDuckGo. The clock was off by a year, 2018. Apparently, psync will not correct this. Laptop could use a new battery for NVRAM.

Slacko64-6.9.9.8(k.9.30 build)

Slacko64-6.9.9.8

Tried an 'UPDATE' to previous version of Slacko64... It did not go well, lots of left-overs from previous version and PPM didn't function properly... A fresh load with 6.9.9.8 seemed to work well with minimal testing and I didn't create a savefile as yet (down the road plans) then a fresh go at it. Have to scrap the UPDATE and start again.

I don't recommend an UPDATE, do a NEW install!

Slacko64 6.9.9.8 K4.9.30

First boot desktop.

This is the first desktop a new user will see.

Has no icons on desktop.

Repeat issue:
There is no icon for the trash.
Trash needs a desktop icon to work correctly.
Needed for drag and drop.
needed for icon right click menu that gives options for trash
XLock needs a desktop icon to get full usage of lock feature.
Using it from the menu works, but who wants to click in a menu to lock the screen, when a desktop icon is just right there to click.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

This may be a bug in LibreOffice.

Does this In any program of LibreOffice.

Example:
LibreOffice Writer.

Click on help->Libreoffice help F1

It goes to this web link:
https://help.libreoffice.org/index.php? ... _id3149178
This basically explains the help menu buttons.

Click F1 the key for help.
It goes to this web link:
https://help.libreoffice.org/index.php? ... _id3147244
This seems like the actual help.

Click on help->Libreoffice help
indicates clicking on it or clicking F1 should go to help.
They seem to go to different links.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

What iso are you running - I can't reproduce it here now.
I've seen this before, but didn't catch the relationship to pTheme. If I could reproduce it, I guess it would be doable to fix.
Hi zigbert, it's happening with the slacko-6.9.9.8-k3.16-4G-FF-ABI.iso in ally's archive.org mirror link above right now for me on a fresh boot using it's default theme, or anything with stardust_bright_mouse. Here's a video to show how to reproduce (sorry for the length, be sure to watch the part starting at 4:55 too though for a funny surprise :) )

https://my.pcloud.com/publink/show?code ... Ai2zXLUGK7

I think when the battery is empty it should show the plugged in icon instead, because an empty battery means the laptop shouldn't even be running but my laptop doesn't have a battery, so perhaps a better fix would just be to get rid of blank.svg in powerapplet_tray.pet and direct it to something like a 32x32 connect.svg instead with a new name, but it also seems to be some bizarre ptheme + specific theme issue because it doesn't display "blank.svg" when opening those windows without it.
So, it's not pTheme after all...

Who is in charge of powerapplet_tray. - It should absolutely not mess with the icons in /usr/share/pixmaps/puppy. They are there for a reason...

One way to fix this from the pTheme side is to rename blank.svg to eg. null.svg in /usr/share/themes/Stardust_bright_mouse/gtk-2.0/gtkrc. This is an easy fix, but I have not the complete picture if blank.svg is in use by other apps. Blank is meant to be 'Blank'

Thanks for your comprehensive investigation.

Thanks zigbert. I made a new powerapplet_tray pet. All I did was replace blank.svg with nobattery.svg in it's source, and it removes the "blank.svg" from pixmaps if found too. And now if powerapplet can't detect your battery charge it will be a lot more obvious from the nobattery icon (see pic). :D This resolved the powerapplet_tray / stardust_bright_mouse blank.svg conflict.

What is an elegant solution for this issue?

Sure, I can find out if you have 'intel' graphics but it is not a 'one-size-fits-all' solution. (Hmm.. probably if we were relying on udev instead of 'xorgwizard-automatic' to set up X then we would be ok...).

Compiling a database of chips that work with the 'fix' will be very tedious and very 'hit and miss'.

I'm open to ideas... anyone? Maybe I should add a script to do this and issue instructions in the release notes to execute this script if you have problems with 'Intel HD Graphics'?

Maybe you affected guys should post some logs. (/var/log/Xorg0.log maybe).
@o1micko, don't know how to have solved this but it seems to be really excellent for me (and my intel poulsbo graphics).

I have just dd-ed 64bit-4.9.30 version to a USB pendrive
and booted with
drm_kms_helper.edid_firmware=edid/1920x1080.bin (and 1680x1050).

modesetting driver is automatically chosen
framebuffer driver is also working very well accelerated.

resolutions could be changed.
Very interesting: it works without gpudriver.conf in X11/xorg.conf.d

Thanks very much

Booting without kernel parameter
drm_kms_helper.edid_firmware

slacko has drm_kms_helper

slacko is finding the correct gpu driver gma500

slacko is finding the correct module gma500-gfx.ko

but "unknown symbol in module or unknown parameter"

guess this could be edid.firmware=edid/withxheight.bin ???

Hope this helps

wallpaper and desktops?

#133 Post by prehistoric »

This is probably a question answered elsewhere, for which a link would do, but could someone explain why using Nathan's wallpaper setter puts the new background elsewhere, and why clicking on the background switches back and forth to a desktop not shown on the panel? Am I dealing with pTheme? Should there still be a menu entry for the wallpaper setter by itself?

Computer has a Nvidia GTX 970 graphics card.

Initial first boot:

Slacko 6.9.9.8 K4.4.70 (32bit version).
Boots to desktop.
No problems.

Slacko64 6.9.9.8 K4.9.30 (64bit version).
Boots to black screen.
Use option nouveau.modeset=0
Now boots to desktop, no problem.
Resolution setup is not correct, but works.
32bit Slacko version resolution is correct.

Both are using nouveau driver.

Why????
What is different in graphics boot control??

You would have to ask the kernel devs as I don't have the answer. Linux is starting to get sucky.. especially when there are regressions in a mainline 'LTS' kernel

As for your trash debacle.. as Sailor said you can change theme but I see your point from a noob perspective. I'll consider asdding the 'trash' icon. As for 'lock screen' it is also available from the logout gui so I'm not adding that. Fair compromise?

----

@ziggy , Sailor I have rebuilt the battery indicator and moved the icons elsewhere. I'll do the same for netmon_wce.

----

@all

RC2 is now up at ibiblio and main post updated. Thanks to ally for the interim. :)

I have never tried 3.16 (or 32 bit).
But I have tried all combinations of generic driver and resolution
in xorgwizard of command line.
Modesetting and framebuffer driver work very well accelerated:
glxgears: 260 FPS (same as with Fatdog64)

Thanks a lot for all your hard work.
I'm a non-expert.
I put some of the files in an ext3 directory on the secondary spinning drive in the E6410 laptop, and did a grub4dosconfig.
Rebooted to a desktop of this new slacko.
Good!
Will report later what happens without adrv. without fdrv.
Or is it known?

UPDATE:

Booted fine without adrv or fdrv.
Did sfs_load of iron-58.0.3050.0-i386.sfs
It works.

I'm trying to figure out how I got into that state. I can say I was having trouble with WiFi, and may have rerun the first-time script, which generated a new puppypc name.

That would be a nicer explanation than having a non-deterministic problem more likely on slow machines.
