I found the locales from a debian site that might just work for this version due to its the same release number. So that might be the fix you needed?
Tell me how it went
The success, thanks!

request:vlc with v4l/v4l2 support

#123 Post by ferikenagy »

Big request:...can somebody recompile for puppy, vlc with support for input from: v4l & v4l2 ENABLED?
This should permit vlc to capture video data (&sound) from analog TV cards, webcams too.
With streaming output to LAN enabled, it could transform puppy with the solely use of vlc, in a small web stream server over local net not only for prerecorded video files, but for live broadcast of analog TV or webcam.
Unfortunately this is missing from current 0.86h vlc pet.

vlc with v4l

thanks mikeb for the link....I have installed puppy301 to be slackware compatible and download your link...but there are some missing libraries :
# ldd /usr/bin/vlc

and I presume that vlc would not work under root in puppy....it must be hacked to be functional in puppy.......the best solution should be a new pet package with v4l & v4l2 enabeled...

VLC is now working fine on my laptop, as well as gxine.

It seems tht xorg has a bug where it sometimes misreads the video driver and writes a wrong value in xorg.conf

The solution to VLC and gxine was a simple as changing a "16" to a "24" in two places.

ferikenagy....late christmas pressy.....extract what you need from here

http://indogo.org/vlc_dependancies.tar.gz

there's the goom libraries in there too :)
and I presume that vlc would not work under root in puppy.
the 0.8.6 series will run as root as is

The MPlayer package I contributed here includes V4L/V4L2 input support -
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=26511
(plus many other features)

This is the MPlayer version that MU includes in his various Puppy derivatives. MU has written various posts explaining how to get webcams working with MPlayer. Of particular note; it's important to configure MPlayer to use the correct input, v4l or v4l2, depending on which webcam driver is in use (gspca, pwc, uvc etc).

Is this version of MPlayer a complete replacement for gxine, xine, and VLC or an adjunct to them, please?

Complete replacement.
It's nothing new ... it was posted almost a year ago.

Each of the media player applications mentioned here has its relative merits. Xine and VLC handle DVD menus better than MPlayer. VLC has marginally less CPU usage than the other two ... under certain conditions. By the same token, MPlayer wins the CPU usage stakes under certain conditions, too - when running the "XvMC" output.

vlc with v4l in puppy

#132 Post by ferikenagy »

thank you mikeb...I have reinstalled in puppy 301 vlc from your link:
http://repository.slacky.eu/slackware-1 ... lc/0.8.6c/ and put the missing dependencies also from your link:http://indogo.org/vlc_dependancies.tar.gz
and I tried vlc under root user and spot user too (for spot I have to make rw /dev/video0 and /dev/dsp0)...but it behaves very strange. It lunch ok for a very short time (I can see the TV program for a second), then quit with an error message:"Floating point exception"
under "root" it says:

# vlc v4l:/dev/video0:norm=pal:frequency=727250:size=640x480:channel=0
VLC media player 0.8.6c Janus
starting VLC root wrapper... using UID 0 (root)
***************************************
* Running VLC as root is discouraged. *
***************************************

It is potentially dangerous, and might not even work properly.
(.:4514): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_widget_set_size_request: assertion `width >= -1' failed
Floating point exception
#

under "spot" it says:
# vlc v4l:/dev/video0:norm=pal:frequency=727250:size=640x480:channel=0
VLC media player 0.8.6c Janus
(.:4327): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_widget_set_size_request: assertion `width >= -1' failed
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:831:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to create IPC semaphore
Floating point exception

> so I am back again...

also thanks for "tempestuous", for his link for better puppy 'mplayer'.For testing my TV card I used mplayer. But now I am trying not only to use TV card for local viewing, but to stream it over my local network. If it work it seems to me the simplest solution, of using only vlc for viewing , but also as an streaming server.I do not try to make sophisticated things like 'mythbuntu' or to install 'ffserver',it is far beyond my purpose and to complicated for my skill.I have tested vlc9.4 under ubuntu 8.10 with webcam (v4l2://) and tried to stream over network an movie file, and it was ok, so I really want to make vlc to work under puppy too (to work as an LAN stream server for TV card and webcam)
I have an old AMD 700Mhz with 256MB RAM which now is my LAN printer server (CUPS) with only puppy4.12 is ok, I can wake this machine over LAN (wake on LAN is functioning) and I can shut it down over LAN with tightVNC , and it has an old analog TV card so it is the perfect candidate to be an video server too under puppy, if I managed to get a really functional vlc with v4l/v4l2 enabel.

ferikenagy ...ugh...wxwidgets compatability problem...

vlc 0.8.6 from slackware works ok in later 2.xx puppies and was also tested and working ok in puppy 4.xx......Tests in puppy 3.xx were not very successful...related to the gtk version it seems...sorry was a while ago we tried this.
Don't worry about 'slackware compatabiolity' it's pretty meaningless in this context and is actually about the install system rather than binary compatabilty.

vlc v4l partialy solved!

#134 Post by ferikenagy »

on puppy 412, installed vlc 8.6h pet, and extracted from slackware package (8.6c,or 8.6h,or8.6i) the missing v4l module:
/usr/lib/vlc/access/libv4l_plugin.so
....and finaly it works!
I could stream over my local LAN , from puppy, images from my old analog TV card, and view them on my laptop.....
Now about the dark side: it seems that this module v4l for 8.6h is very limited and full of bugs, because it won't function only on very low resolution (320x240) ,on greater resolution exit with some sort of 'croma err'...bug, documented on net.
Not only is limited on on resolution, but also is limited on frame rate, instead of 25 frames/s it has aprox. 1 or 2 frames / second When I stream a movie file from HardDisk, everything is ok,so it is obvious it is the module........I hope a newer version of vlc will solve this problems....

vlc & v4l almost working

#135 Post by ferikenagy »

I installed the vlc 0.9.2 strip down version mentioned earlier on this thread. As I was expected it was solved the bug that prevent to see the v4l2 interface on greater pixel size, now it works with 720x576 for example.
The second bug was still there, the frames drop to 1-2/second and it looks like some buffer problem, the vlc when input from v4l2:// eats a lot of ram and swap and of corse 95% CPU time. it is true that my hardware is low : AMD duron 700Mhz, RAM=256kb swap=512kb, but it eats so much resources only on v4l2:// (95% CPU), when playing from file it eats aprox 40%, so I presume it is some kind of bug in it.
I could not try the vlc 098a version (from slackware) , I could not make it run...so I shall stop the test until somebody with good compile skill & time will provide an up to date version of vlc for puppy, or maybe in upcoming 'woof' if compatibility with ubuntu will work.

Seems that the slackware 0.8.6 vlc won't work on puppy 4.1.2......used to work on 4.0 x...this is mainly due to wxwidgets not happy with this weeks gtk2 libs.
but.......plugins from those packages DO work in combination with ttuuxxx's pet...eg I had goom running by using the plugin from slack....

You could maybe try out the 0.9.x packages from slackware...you never know..they use qt4 by the way rather than wxwidgets.

The vlc 0.8.6h I made works in all 4.0+ series even 4.2, edoc had other system related issues that was interfering with all media players in general, its now fixed and his Gxine + VLC are working. :)
