The only way to load this one would be with the external floppy drive,
pcmia {if that can be done ta all and I bought a card}, or perhaps the serial port. I am going to try and hook up a serial to usb adapter and if that does not work I will take it to the house and try serial to serial.
If that won't work the Ethernet card is only 12.00 delivered and if I get it running I need one anyway. Anyone got a small pcmia card they would trade for a newer one? Actually it is brand new! I bought it several years ago to use in an old compaq and I had a really good week and bought a Gateway Tablet so it has gathered dust ever since.

Frank I thought I'd outlined how I got around the (current) inability of Puppy to load properly from a pcmcia cd-rom drive in this thread ("Install basic Puppy on a computer with 16 Mb RAM"http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=48214) - but I see that it isn't really highlighted well there. It is do-able with the grub floppy that rcrsn51 put together, but a drive transplant is probably your better option for that IBM of yours. Good Luck!

It was my fault I did not see it. After spending half a day trying to figure this out I was a bit frustrated.
I am going to try the transplant but considering I cannot even access the bios I may be wasting my time.

Puplite updated to 5.0, this is a big update, with 2 kernel versions.
(the default puppy 4 kernel, and the wary 5.1 kernel)

Puplite the wary5 version I just downloaded seems to work as expected here. Have not tested other than browsing.

Ha ha typical of me to intall Firefox when I could ahve used a firefox.sfs on the hdd instead. Now the boot manager ask if I should load the sfs at boot. But it is already installed in the savefile I guess.

May I ask an embarrassing question. Puplite is a more elaborated version than Barebone is it not. You have spent a lot of time to decide on what to include and not while Barebone is just a barebone?

You have the sfs installer and a lot of other things included from scratch? A richer puppy? Just trying to get what is what. neither praise nor criticism because I fail to get what I am using. But the presentation on first post is very assuring. So much work done. Feels good to know that you thought it through that thoroughly.

I used the nosmp just in case. Wary usually need it. Anyway thanks for providing it.

Correct.... this quote is from the "Puplite readme":

Puplite is intended to be a very easy "plug & play" operating system, which requires few resources and little knowledge or effort to setup, while allowing users to customise the system easily to their liking.

Puplite is a smaller, lighter, less resource-intensive derivative of Puppy Linux 4, with the 2.6.25.16 kernel. It is more "up to date" than Puppy 4, with many fixes, improvements, upgrades and added features.

Also, if you are trying Puplite, try the "Firedog" browser. It is very nooby friendly, I think!

To give a clearer example of what Puplite is about:

It is intended to be a usable all round desktop PC linux, that will work on most PCs, even older ones:

- I kept the ISO size as small as possible, without losing important features
- I replaced many apps with smaller alternatives (samba-tng is one example)
- I included many CLI (terminal) apps as default (elinks, moc, etc)
- I added/updated many tiny apps for added features (bashpodder, flash-get, vlc-gtk)
- I made it as user friendly as possible (startups, pupsave-config, firstrun, PupControl, etc)

.. and so on.. basically I wanted a small, fast, easy Puppy with lots of apps and features...

Just a note, in case anyone actually uses this, the wary version of puplite 5 (k2.6.32.28 ) needs the standard puppy 4 devx file, but in sfs4 format! SFS files can be easily converted by right clicking on them.

Try Ctrl+Q (the quit command for VLC)

Puplite uses VLC (no gui) when you double click, or you can right click on most video files and choose the VLC-GTK interface.
Or, when a video is playing, double click to exit fullscreen.

Note, many .flv files will not work in Puplite. But some will.

The devx file is only needed for compiling programs from source code. It is a seperate thing entirely.

Yes, it's easy. Download the devx for puppy 4. Then when it is downloaded, right-click on it and choose 'Convert SFS'.

Then when it is converted, right click on the new file (devx-sfs4) and choose 'Load SFS'.

What would be a good browser if Firedog is too much for the system? 486 20 megs ram. I like e-links but the last time i tried it I could not get Google to work in it. If I have to go with an email program that downloads the mails I need one that does not insist on downloading all the mail the first time.

Dillo is very light... Elinks still works for me, I use it more and more..
Also H3v (i think thats the name), if you got tcl/tk installed...

As for very light email clients, maybe 'elmo' or 'alpine'...

Just a quick note - 5.0 wary kernel - mouse works correctly. The reverse middle wheel bugged me in 4,0 and I never came close to figuring out a way to fix it.

The devx file is used for compiling apps (building them from source). The k2.6.32.28 version only supports sfs4 files. So the standard puppy 4 devx sfs (link also in first post) needs to be converted to sfs4 - but ONLY for users of puplite k2.6.32.28.

This is easy. Download it. Then right click on it, choose 'Convert SFS' and choose the folder you want to use, then after conversion, look in that folder and you will have the new devx, in sfs4 format.

You can right click on the new one and choose 'Load SFS' to load it.

They are. After you install the "Puppy 5 Compatibility". Just go to "Menu->System->Puppy 5 Compatibility" and install it.

BUT - it is not entirely recommended - if you absolutely want to use lots of Puppy 5 apps, then probably best to use Puppy 5!

Glad you like it. The wary kernel version is a bit of a mongrel, but it works quite well, I think.
Glad the bug is gone for you, as I have no idea how it got in there!!
