Netsurf is not working very well and JWM is flaky
Do not use anything but a powered hub if possible

Arch is noticeably faster than Debian
I also got LXDE working - seemed OK but I immediately tried JWM
and that has me convinced that Puppi can be fast. Hooray.

Do you know where the jwm config file is kept (if available?)

Good! The thing is, does it render the widgets correctly? This was one of the big showstoppers in my armv7 compile on the Mele A1000, as I reported in my blog:

JWM config files in $HOME (your home directory, /root if running as root, or /home/Ed if running as user Ed) will override whatever is in /etc.

I see you've compiled vala for raspi. That will be very handy for the kids as it is heavily influenced by C♯ and already supported in Puppy.

Hi guys! I have been following this thread with interest for some time. I got tired of waiting for my R_pi (delivery not expected for another 3-4 weeks) and decided to wander into the raspberry thicket where y'all are playing. But since I am pretty much an amateur beginning noobie (yes I know, redundancy) things are very confusing.

I am using Qemu 0.14.0 within Ubuntu 11.10 and have R_pi up and running (Debian6-19-04-2012, zImage_3.1.9). I can compile, "gcc hello_world.c" => a file which "file hello_world" identifies as an arm file.

I have done a sudo apt-get install (my network seems to running O.K.) of jwm, rox-filer, and rxvt. I can call each of these from the command line and they seem to do their thing (more or less).

When I do "startx" in the R_pi terminal I get the LXDE enviornment with LXTerminal, Midori, PCManFM plus a number of other applications.

When I do a "sudo xinit /usr/bin/jwm" in the R_pi terminal, I get an empty JWM screen. When I click on the JWM button in the left lower corner of the screen, I get all of the same menus (and active programs) that were in the LXDE desktop!

Question: How do I get "startx" to bring up the JWM enviornment rather than LXDE, and get rxvt and rox-filer as options in the menus rather than the applications that are default in LXDE?

Question #2: Y'all seem to be moving briskly on the arm platform as well as Debian. And you seem to compiling a lot of the applications. Does Arch not have a repository of pre-compiled stuff that you can download from?

Question #3: How do I change the screen resolution to something like 1024 x 768?

I got my Raspbberry some days ago, installed Debian and Arch and I'm trying to get more familiar with it. It's a hard way because I've never tested Arch before and my small experience with Debian was years ago.

The sound problem seems to be solved. The patch itself doesn't work in Arch (I think, it's for Debian) but the modprobe command does.

In Arch I installed deadbeef and run "modprobe snd_bmc2835" in a terminal. It works .

I have been trying to set up a printer in Qemu/Debian/R_pi. In Midori I tried to go to http://localhost:631 but got an error saying "the page http:localhost:631 cannot be loaded" (the browser went to www.murga-linux.com without problem).

I added chromium-browser to R_pi, and it could not find localhost:631 either. So I checked (with Synaptic Package Manager) and CUPS is not in the Debian6 image provided by R_pi, so I added it with Synaptic.

CUPS could not find my networked HP 6500a inkjet so I went thru the setup pages using the connection "Socket://xxxxxxxxx:9100" that my Eeepc connecttion uses in Puppy Lucid 5.25. But so far it is not working.

Has anyone tried CUPS using Qemu or the real R_PI?

I would like to help out with Puppi project is there anything I can test or work on yet?

@Lobster why not add scrot to list of packages you could then take screenshots then upload them....

Stuck Arch on sd card, fired up updated added X plus openbox but keyboard and mouse refused to work..

Going to load up from scratch and test out your guide

First update of arch I go hwdata conflicts, like a muppet I removed them to allow install to carry on [-f did not work].

Think I will try jwm via guide see if I have any more luck

I am going through the jwm setup using Arch again.

Step 3 has been updated
- the pacman program has to be updated

Arch is a rolling release - constantly updated .
Update command can take a while - took about 20 minutes on broadband

pacman -S pacman
pacman -Syu

there are also some procedures based around xinit/xstart
to prepare JWM that I have not documented and frankly am not sure how to implement

. . . hopefully Mark will have a Raspberry Pi shortly and can help out with info

Decided to edit configs rc.conf, locales, mirrorlist

Switched mirrors to Germany based ones and got a load of different updates

Now get a better looking console display

Tried to get openbox to run but needed xorg loaded first

Managed to get X running but system locked up while installing firefox. ..so called it a day

Odd thing with lspci was not able to get any output

Did add a swapfile I know you are not meant to use one with sd card but I could not stand the pain of waiting for packages to load.

This of course could be solved if running from ram...
