pup_event_frontend_d is responsible for that .

That should poll /sys/block or /sys/class/block for devices .

pup_event_frontend_d was rewritten some month ago : http://bkhome.org/blog2/?viewDetailed=00281
I spent all day today testing, so hopefully no bugs got through.

Searching http://bkhome.org/blog2/ for "pup_event" by content should bring some info.
It happens randomly! When I plug in a usb, when I have a window open and minimize it the drive icons are gone, when i just stare at the desktop, any time...

Testing 5.6.3

#123 Post by sszindian »

5.6.3

Overall, so far a nice distro... 'most' everything works (that I installed and tested) without a problem except for WiFi !!!!!

I have a AE1000 Linksys that uses the rt2800usb connection, it does not connect! Had the same problem with Wheezy prior to the 3.5.2.11 build but pemasu fixed that and it now works. Maybe someone could find out just what he did and apply a fix for Slacko, they appear to be similar.

SFR: Thanks to you, it's nice to see real pictures flying around on the xscreensaver Carousel instead of the blank screen.

Till the next slacko version, install the pet from here and reboot.

I had previously tried the Wheezy fix without success... so went back and reinstalled it again thinking I may have missed something, even rebooted, tried several of the various confg's even frisbee ones... 'No Success in Slacko."

Since the firmware section is a little bit "work in progress"...I did update my all-firmware section from git firmware. I just copied over with git firmware latest versions.

Not sure if it had any meaning. Anyway...this firmware was also copied over. I am not sure if there was any size difference, and if the firmware was different version. I did the job as mass swapping.

pemasu:

Tried swapping the rt2800usb.ko from Wheezy over to Slacko along with the other rt-usb modules (from 2800 up).

Wheezy rt2800usb.ko size was 44 - updated Feb 2013
Slacko rt2800usb.ko size was 52 - updated Nov 2013

Anyway it didn't work in fact Slacko now doesn't even recognize a wifi connection which it did before.

Will wait for the next update of Slacko and see what happens then?

You cannot swap the kernel .ko modules.
You can however swap the rtXYZ.bin 's in /lib/firmware . Or fetch them manually from /lib/modules/all-firmware/rt2870sta-fw/ if still there .

Thanks for that... All this is beyond my knowledge, I am just a 'Tester' trying to let the dev's know when I find something just doesn't work right. Someone with the able knowledge has to do the real fix'n !!! My thoughts are that when something is included in a puppy build, it should work right or else it shouldn't be in there!

@Sszindian: thanks for the feedback about xscreensaver - I'm glad it works for you, too!
___________

snapmergepuppy

Hmm, there's a problem with cp -a -u -f "$N" "$BASE/$N".
It seems that '-u | --update' option doesn't react on file attributes change.
IOW: if _only_ permissions and/or ownership of a file in pup_rw have been changed, such a file (actually - its attributes) won't be updated in pup_ro1.
(This concerns only files, dirs are being handled ok, btw.)

The least intrusive way I found is to use cp one more time, but with '--attributes-only' param:

Code: Select all

 if [ -L "$N" -o "$NEXTPASSTHRU" = "" ];then
#link, or first run of snapmergepuppy. no '-u' (update) option.
  cp -a -f "$N" "$BASE/$N"
 else
  cp -a -u -f "$N" "$BASE/$N" #v3.02
  cp -a --attributes-only -f "$N" "$BASE/$N"	# SFR: needed if only permissions/ownership have changed
 fi
Maybe there's a better way to fix this, IDK...

Greetings!

Sylpheed Manual

#131 Post by playdayz »

The Sylpheed-manual-faq-config.pet has manuals and faq in it.

This pet causes Sylpheed -> Help -> Manual to work. The help adds up to 700K or so and is not installed in Slacko, but this pet redirects to the online Help (for only 697 bytes!). This does only the Manual so far, but the same can be done with the FAQ if this tests out OK.

ATTN: Shinobar. The Japanese version of the Manual is online and the pet links to it but it does not display correctly. Do you know what if anything can be done?

WAIT:
To enable the Help in Sylpheed one must change Configuration -> Common Preferences -> Details -> External Commands -> Web browser to defaultbrowser '%s' Version 2 of the Sylpheed manual pet does that automatically. If you have already configured Sylpheed then use the first version and make the change in preferences manually because the pet replaces one of the Sylpheed config files--this is just testing, right?.

Double plus good for Indian. IMHO the testers are absolutely essential to the quality of Puppy. Testers ought to be proud of the contribution they make, because every problem they find would show up for a hundred or more users once released--well, I made up the number but there is a real number something like that, maybe even higher.

The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

Please update PSync to Version 2.9

#133 Post by rwishlaw »

For Slacko 5.7 please consider an update from PSync 2.8 to Version 2.9 available at

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... h&id=68056

The new 2.9 version corrects a problem in 2.8 which, for me, resulted in 8 hours added to to the clock at each reboot.

Micko I tested the new Alpha
and I am as you know an absolute noob
Sure I know more than some noobs but
I am like a noob in that I fail to know what
to do next and fail to find that in the software.

So don't take this as a criticism at all
I love that you are at it and give us new Slacko
to test.

Now to what I did not like.

I wanted to play an WMA file.
You chose to use Pmusic
and maybe that is a good choice for WMA
I have no idea but the very bad thing with Pmusic
is that it decide on it's own what to do
instead of asking me first I did not want it to make a database.
Pmusic started to list all the wma files and that locked up
the player for many minutes before it could play
the chose file. Yes I understand it is only when one
use it the first time. But as a noob one trust something
got very wrong and hit the panic button to get out of
the faulty software not knowing it is set up that way
.

So I hit ctrl+alt+Backspace to get to a fresh start
and writing xwin or something I fail to remember.

Would a complete noob even know how to get out of it?

And would they know how to set up Pmusic to skip
that Database collection of all my music files? I doubt that
because I have no idea where to do that despite being
hers since 2008.

I do understand why you chose FF17 instead of
the current release FF 26 that I use on Lupu.

The internet connection was tricky though.
I am not sure of if a noob would know how to do it.
But it worked when I had hit the right buttons
but more out of pure chance and pure luck
me not knowing if I did it right or wrong.

To mavrothal it worked very fast when I downloaded some
30 minutes ago. say 2minutes or at most 3 minutes
I live in Sweden maybe our lines are faster?

not an ideal solution though

Damn, Ziggy's doing really great job - very nice those new icons are! :)

Considering the latest changes in Woof (depreciation of ~/Startup/ and removing IceWM legacy stuff) I've done a quick test of some other WMs.
And yeah - empty tray in IceWM, Openbox and FluxBox (but my modified version of Peebee's LXDE/Compiz seems to be ok).
Additionaly lack of menu entries in IceWM (fixmenus throws icewm-xdgmenu: command not found).
Does it mean that all those packages need to be redone somehow to fit recent changes in Woof?

Thanks &
Greetings!

At this stage it's to be expected. It's a work in progress.

BTW, I did see your fix for the snapmerge and it is under consideration, plus the newer kernel in the 4g (non-PAE) has the patch for your wireless issue. (It wasn't fixed upstream at that time).

Short comment on 5.6.4 :
Have used the delta, replaced the 5.6.3.sfs on a USB vfat partition of 1GB
with the 5.6.4.sfs and it's vmlinuz and initrd.gz
and booted it and chose the old 5.6.3 save-file and everything went well so far .

Bootmanager went well to select the coretemp module : /etc/rc.d/MODULESCONFIG : ADDLIST=' coretemp '
