Many people use this extra option in Debian, Ubuntu and every linux using live-boot
or casper (including DD). You can boot even the main squashfs module using only
initrd.img and vmlinuz on your computer.
Another form of netboot by downloading a squashfs image from a given url.
The fetch method copies the image to ram and the httpfs method uses fuse and httpfs2
to mount the image in place. Copying to ram requires more memory and might take a long
time for large images. However, it is more likely to work correctly because it does not
require networking afterwards and the system operates faster once booted because it does
not require to contact the server anymore.
Read about httpfs= and fetch= parameters.
I find fetch= as more useful. It does download the main module in RAM each boot,
but the system runs very fast after that. Still you can use persistent
save file, folder, partition or cpio.tar.gz archive.
Updating the main module is not a problem this way, because last
version will be loaded each boot from anyone booting from the same url.

Neat!
Had to use the IP rather than domain name, and can also use a iso. Using just vmlinuz and initrd.img, 2 min 20 seconds to download 1.3GB Debian Gnome iso from the Debian web site.

Just neat? Here is the place to say WOW... fantastic... ten steps ahead of google...
Netboot is great option provided by Mr Baumann and Debian live team and it is included in every Debian based live system the last ten years. It is available from the start in DebianDog, MintPup, XenialDog. I had to make some fixes to keep this option working in older live-boot-2 (initrd1.img) for DD-Wheezy and DD-Jessie, because I find it very useful.
Nice to read netboot works with iso image. I didn't know that. Thanks.
BTW there is netboot parameter ftpfs= missing from most documentation. It should use fuse and curlftpfs to mount the module without downloading (similar to httpfs=), but I didn't test this option myself.

Hi saintless !

Nice to hear from you again and to see you are also still alive and kicking !
Your profound knowledge is missed somehow on this thread .Your disappearance left some gap behind .

I never give the hierarchy of expressions much thought. Just vary them so not to be repetitive.

Not even sure about the hierarchical order of emo's either, for instance how might the following be ranked?

I was gonna say this, but thankfully now I don't have to  . It just seems to me time would be better devoted to other things in the development of any future DD.

Hi Backi!

Nope, Fred has robbed us of all the fun and made the DDs too darn stable and running too smoothly. There's no problems to FIX! How could he do that to us??? :( :( :( :( :( :( LOL.

So, to create headaches and virtual nightmares for myself, I am constantly doing woof-CE builds, but tweaking the building process by trying to add stuff left and right, and also remove stuff I know I probably shouldn't be removing (like ROX, boy, talk about yer' nightmare on Elm Street, try removing ROX and then doing a woof-CE build with modifications you've made in the scripts. Holy friggin' crap....lol!!!)

So, until Fred makes something that we fiddler junkies can mess with again, that ain't perfect, I don't know how else to deal with our addiction. We are strung out...

Comment of a movie critic (regarding the movie "The Hound of the Baskervilles" )
Odd that Hammer Horror films end this brilliant adaptation with cosy tea and muffins instead of Holmes calling "Quick, Watson, the needle!", for his cocaine shot.

Being rather sensitive, rufwoof? :)
Everyone can compare your posts and the subjects for your reactions. My opinion is above.
What comes as a surprise for me is how little know about Debian long time DD users and developers.

Edit: My intention to post here was to show you how good live-boot (and casper) really is. Anything you can think of is already there a long time ago. Focussing on alien boot scripts is the biggest weakness of the project. Sorry if my post sounds offensive to someone.

Always log in as "myuser" and always ask for password?

Hi all,

I don't doubt somebody has already asked this, and/or maybe this is the wrong thread to ask it, but I've created a new user with "sudo" privileges. Let's call him "myuser".

Now I know Puppy (and Puppy-esque) OS's operate in "root", but in Xenialdog's case, is it possible to boot up in "myuser" and to be required to supply the password for "myuser" every time at boot up and in terminal? (And if so, how?)

I know that you can create different save files, etc.. to simulate users in Pups and Dogs, but Xenialdog comes with the "Add new user" option right in the menu, so I figure that you can create multiple users and, by the same logic, boot up the OS as those users by default, instead of root.

Thx..

Yes indeed ......this is true ...for example in my case being just a bloody amateur ....and there are many more like me.
What i really appreciate is that guys like you and all the other ones, with a broader knowledge , have created such awesome projects like Minpup Deb/Xenial Dog and so on ...make their knowledge public and share their creativity to make life easy and fun for everyone....also to express one self`s creativity and intelligence .
There is a lot to learn and it can be fun.Everyone does profit from working and learning together,

There is no such thing as perfect linux OS. Writing the same nonsense again and again doesn't help anyone but the opposite.
If you find this or any other linux perfect, this means you are too lazy to test properly. Same goes for Fred - not enough testing and too often changing the code leading to endless new bugs is his weakness from the start.
Ask your self am I the only one who left this project and why other very valuable contributors/developers don't post in the dog threads anymore. And why new people testing the spins have troubles almost always (especially after remastering the system).

Hi frourio,

Yes, XenialDog has full multi-user support, here are a few options:
Assuming you boot with systemd (as it is by default)
The file to edit is '/etc/systemd/system/getty.target.wants/getty@tty1.service' , so as root do in terminal:

Code: Select all

leafpad /etc/systemd/system/getty.target.wants/getty@tty1.service
Find the line ExecStart=-/sbin/agetty --noclear -a root %I $TERM
- For autologin as "myuser" change it to:

Code: Select all

ExecStart=-/sbin/agetty --noclear -a myuser %I $TERM
- For NO autologin, make it:

Code: Select all

ExecStart=-/sbin/agetty --noclear %I $TERM
Then you can login manually from console at reboot.

Also without changing above mentioned file, you can login as "myuser" after you booted to root account (as set default)
From Menu > Logout > Exit X
Then you get to console and type:

Code: Select all

login
Press Enter
And type your username and password (press Enter everytime you typed something)
Note that this way it's not a true multi-user setup because you can easily get back to login as root without typing password by doing:
From Menu > Logout > Exit X
On console type:

Code: Select all

exit
Then

Code: Select all

startx
And you are in root account again

Never said perfect...and if .....just somehow ironic (not cynic) in a "funny" sense......I dont want to challenge fred for anything .I see it as some type of "open community project " .....just for fun .
Did never want dive deep down into Linux (maybe i should have ) but happens just as a side effect.
I am just a laymen not aware of what makes the finer differences ..... you probably are ...
Maybe i do underestimate your necessary serious approach .But i appreciate it .

The only thing i can contribute is to give feedback as a user.Trying to entertain and motivate and help other people as far as i can.
But you gave me something to think about.
So come on Toni... don`t hesitate ,jump on and join the party... show us some real Linux Magic......

Regarding :

Maybe you are right .
I myself feeling just as a guest here ,never intended to become affected by "inside politics"....it is not my business to judge about personal animosities i even dont know about .
But your view of things is always welcome to me .....even if it seems to sound not "nice " .

O.K Toni......have a nice day.....
Blessings from Germany .

I'm using Debian Jessie and have three accounts set up. The standard root which I only ever use at the command line level (typically to run apt-get update;apt-get upgrade); The standard account that can sudo that I use for personal documentation and files work; And a restricted account that is assigned to a restricted shell (so can't for instance can't even cd in a terminal) ... that I use for all internet activity (firefox, skype, kodi ...etc.). I've also set the permissions around that restricted users folder so as to prevent it accessing other data folders, other than a single SHARED folder that I use to port files between users.

I have it set up to boot to the restricted userid as I tend to use that the most (browsing the web etc), and just Ctrl-Alt-Fn and login as required to other userid's.

So if a virus breaks out of the browser during a single session, say ransomware, then it also has to break through privilege escalation or otherwise be extremely contained.

Similar to Puppy 'run as spot', but in a true multi-user manner (standard pup's don't support multi-user).

Fred's detailed how to set access up for XenialDog. In my case of using Debian and lightdm I have a entry in /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf of

autologin-user=ff

so that at bootup it autologins into the gui of the restricted userid (ff in my case).

Saying sorry doesn't help.

What might help is that the next, let's say, 100 messages you would send are E-X-T-R-A friendly.
We've seen enough "unfriendliness" from you in the past, that's hard to just "forget" (for me at least).
