OK Nathan, I am trying to attach the dmesg.out file. If I can't, I will email it.
The modprobes worked for the firewire! I have captured my first bit of dv. :D
I tried a flash install, but nothing gets saved to the save file on the flash drive at the end of the session, which is getting to be a bit of a pain.Any ideas on this one? After reboot, kino had gone and the dv file I had in /root had gone. Still, at least it's nice to know firewire can be made to work.
Have not managed to get the wireless to work though. Tried the wizard and modprobe. The driver shows up in the wizard but I get the "unable to find an alive interface" message when I test the connection. Tried reloading the driver, but no joy. It always works fine in puppy. Maybe the dmesg output will tell you something?
Cheers, Mike

Well let's hope that it does. Not to make light of things, but you're the only one having these sorts of problems right now, and it's getting to be a major pain in the %$&.

As for the ipw3945 driver apparently requires a bit of firmware, which I'm downloading right now. I'm not entirely sure how to get this whole thing working, but I'm confident this puts me on the right track. I'll send it off to you soon if I can figure out exactly what to send, and we'll see from there.

Wait a minute, this comes with the kernel too? So the files should already be there. Try this, do a "modprobe ieee80211" and then try bringing up the interface. There are a few other modules in the package too, looks like they're needed for wep encryption on the interface. Does this thing work in Puppy, just using the network wizard?

Hi Nathan,

Below I have included my dmesg from the first boot. (The sda1 partition was formatted with FAT which I then reformatted ext3 before rebooting).

For the via-rhine ethernet coming up at only 10mbps, the machine has no internal CDROM so I'll have to hook one up temporarily to try another distro. I will also verify that the cat5 cable gives 100mbps when connected to another machine, ie. it may not be software at all.

I'll let you know as soon as there's news.
Simon.

Using the Grafpup "devx_004.sfs" module

#146 Post by grndoor »

Thank you for making the "devx_004.sfs" module accessible.

I have a Hard Disk installation of the latest Grafpup iso.

How do I mount and extract the contents of the "devx" module so that it can be copied to the HD installation.

Barry's "devx_xxx.sfs" modules can be mounted with a simple:

"mount -o loop devx_xxx.sfs tmp_dir" command, but that doesn't work here.

I mounted it with a mount -o loop command just like in puppy. Nathan mentioned a neat way earlier in this thread. It'll take 2 commands:

mount -o loop devx_xxx.sfs /initrd/graf_ro4
mount-FULL -o remount,append:/initrd/graf_ro4 /

There's one difference here between Puppy and Grafpup that is stuffing this up. In Grafpup with the new kernel, squashfs is built as a module, which means you will have to specify that it is a squashfs when you mount it so that the module can be loaded. It's already loaded when running from live cd or usb, but not with a full hard drive install, so it won't recognize the filesystem. So here's the command -

Code: Select all

mount -o loop -t squashfs devx_004.sfs tmp_directory
The code Jason mentioned, with the "remount, append", would merge the mountpoint into the main filesystem using aufs, provided / was an aufs filesystem. But it isn't one when we're talking about a full hard drive installation. The best way to get the files onto your hard drive then is to mount devx as mentioned and manually copy them over, at least until there is a better method in place.

I remember seeing a blurb about a squashfs installer somewhere on this forum, which does the copy for you, but I don't remember any details. I'm going to hunt for it sometime soon and if it works well perhaps add it to the iso or hack the code into the universal installer. If it doesn't look very elegent I may just write something similar myself.

I think that the universal installer should at least offer to merge in files from any squashfile extensions it finds, and this little feature is something I've been thinking about for a while but just never put into writing anywhere. I'm going to add it to the bug tracker now so I'll have a harder time forgetting.

Hi Nathan, sorry for causing so much trouble, I know you have lots to think about at the moment. The thing is, laptops now outsell desktops, so they appear to be the future, and Dell probably sell more than anyone. AND Vista is such a bag of nails more users are going to be driven towards linux but only if they actually hear about it. Maybe Dells are a problem? I doubt it, but maybe things will improve when they start putting linux on them, and then linux will start to become more widely known about. I tried running the alpha4 live cd on my dads hitachi and it picked up the wifi no probs with an ipw2200. My friend has just got a new dell 1504 so I will see if I can test it on that. He probably won't want me messing his partitions up though! Might be able to persuade him to try a frugal install. I would love to hear if anyone else is having sata / wifi problems.

I tried modprobe ieee80211 but that did not help. If I do a scan, it finds the router fine, but testing the connection, it comes back with unable to connect to an alive network. When using puppy, the wifi has always come straight up, so does that point to something in the new kernel? But then, I have never had grafpup working with the wifi, and the new kernel is only in alpha4 so it seems that puppy has something that grafpup has missing? Would a dmesg of puppy help?

No Mike, pester me all you want because I want it to work for everybody. Seriously.

I'm uploading a new version of the firmware for this card, because the version in zdrv is out of date. That may be where the problem lies. Please try it after booting with "pfix=ram" so we can see if it's going to fix things or not without having any extraneous files from a failed attempt in the way.

As for sata, we have it working for some so at least that's progress. I want to get your wireless working and then we'll concentrate on getting sata working for you too.

Unfortunatley I don't want to read the 11 pages of this topic to find out how near the final release is ....

What would be your guestimate for the release of 2.xx .... or is it still at alpha stage ?

Thanks

If nothing blows up in my face then beta is out the door early next week. After that I plan on pushing the final through within about two weeks of the beta release.

Grafpup "jre_004.sfs" & "devx_004.sfs" modules

#154 Post by grndoor »

The "jre_004.sfs" module ( dated 20 Apr 2007 ) is currently inaccessible.

The "devx_004.sfs" module ( dated 27 Mar 2007 ) appears to be "faulty".

1) The command:

"mount -o loop -t squashfs devx_004.sfs tmp_directory"

fails with the message:

"mount: Mounting /devx_004.sfs on /tmp_directory failed: Invalid argument"

2) The command:

"unsquashfs -ls devx_004.sfs"

which should list the module contents, fails with the message:

"Can't find a SQUASHFS superblock on devx_004.sfs"

The primary Grafpup ".sfs" files "graf_004.sfs" and "zdrv_004.sfs" can both be
mounted successfully using either of the above two commands.

Right on both counts. Not sure how or when but the devx file managed to get corrupted on the server. I'm uploading a good copy now, although it will need updated soon to reflect some changes that have been made in the kernel config and libraries. The Java squashfile is not official until the beta gets released, but I fixed the permissions so you can download it now if you like. If you do, then you will have to add the bin a library directories to the search path. Insert this code into /etc/profile, just after the mozilla section.

Code: Select all

if [ -e /opt/jre ];then
 PATH=/opt/jre/bin:$PATH
 LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/opt/jre/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH

I've been messing around with cdrskin a bit more today and I figured I'd see if I could get it to work with graveman. Graveman uses some various scanbus commands to find the drives to use. I couldn't get either of my drives recognized by default so I decided to work on a script called "cdrecord" to fix that problem. This will need to be used in place of the cdrecord symlink to cdrskin. Of course there's still the issue to make the cd drives world writeable first but that could easily be resolved in a startup script. The only problem would be for external burners that might not be plugged in during the boot up process. This script allowed graveman to see my drives but I didn't try to burn anything yet. I'm guessing that shouldn't be an issue.

Here's the script:

Nathan, I tried the firmware download, but still "unable to connect to a wireless network" in the wizard.
In case I missed something, this is what I did:
Downloaded with puppy to a spare partition.
Started grafpup with pfix=ram
copied tar.gz file to /root.
Clicked to expand. selected all.
modprobe ipw3945
modprobe ieee80211
tried the wizard.
Have I missed anything?
I see it has been downloaded 5 times already. Anyone else got problems?

OK the 10mpbs issue with via-rhine is resolved - it was my fault.

The network cable to the VIA motherboard was routed from the wallplate through a VoIP phone, with a repeater port on the back. That repeater port is only 10Mbps. I think I knew that when I installed it, but you know how you forget these things over time!

Going direct to the wallplate gives me full 100Mbps, no issue.

The SATA drives can now be mounted by Pmount. I put them in /etc/fstab, don't know if this is required or optional.

So all of my issues are sorted and I can go on and create my server. I am going to be running the open source program 'motion' for cctv motion detection. It's a nice application, only generates images and films when movement occurs.
(I will of course test the beta with my h/w when it's issued as well).

Cheers, Simon.

MIke - the firmware package has to be installed. Either use pkgtool or gpkgtool and install it with the local install button.

Code: Select all

pkgtool -install ipw3945_firmware-1.14.2
This command shoulod be run from in the same directory the package is in, and you should be root when you run it. If I understand correctly you just expanded the tarball in /root and left it there.

Simon - awesome news, that's the sort of thing I've been wanting to hear! There should be no need to put the entries in fstab, but no harm in doing so either.

I'm interested in the "motion" program you mentioned, but I've had no luck searching for it. Sounds like something a lot of people might find useful.

You've done a fine job Nathan, thanks.

Motion can be found at: http://www.lavrsen.dk/twiki/bin/view/Motion/WebHome

It is also on sourceforge I believe, hosting the latest version. I make contributions of patches to motion every now and then.
