whats even more interesting is the size of the Main VLC 8.6h package, it went from 10MB to 7.6MB, It had some left over compiling extras and then I stripped all the libs, some of the large plugins, and the bin.
now is that incredible, when you think the previous version was a 24mb pet, and this one opens more formats I wish I could get it down to 5MB without any plugin loss ,lol

wma doesn't work
Hi,
I've got VLC 8.6 and Puppy 4.12 and MacPup 2.0 Foxy. But in neither doesn't seem to be able to play WMA files. When I click on a wma file, VLC will open, and it will even act like its playing, but no sound comes out.
Also I had heard that ffmpeg can convert wma files, but the one I have says that it is an unsupported codec. Even the Pawdioconverter software can't seem to convert it. Gxine cannot play wma either. Is there any decent player in Puppy that can play a wma (windows media audio) file? Or is there any converter that can change it to a more useable file?
Does vlc play ogg files? Does any other player in Puppy?
Thanks for your time.

Re: wma doesn't work
By default wma isn't used by any VLC players on Linux, I've read about it before, its basically illegal thanks to MS propriety. If its wma audio you want to play, xmms on puppy can play it, it comes with the plugin. Also for XMMS. Also Mplayer with the extra plugin pack plays wma also, I would go for xmms, amenyahu wrote:Hi,

if that one doesn't have the wma plugin, I'll make you a pet package with just the wma plugin as a addon.

different md5sum
Hi tuxxx,
Thanks for pointing that out. The only problem is that I download the xmms pet file and do a md5sum check on it, and the numbers are different. Instead of what I should get
"188560965aa19fed225bc1a7278edd14"
I get
"ed70dab1fbf2872f938f43bb3a307b13"
So normally that should mean that the program won't work, right? Should I still open it?

aaaa give it a shot if it don't work, you can't hurt anything with it anyways , and it can be uninstalled, maybe he updated it and forgot to change the md5.amenyahu wrote:Hi tuxxx,

crashes
Hi tux
I gave it a try. It opened first time. I tried a wma file. When I tried to open it in xmms, the program just disappeared. I tried it again, and the same thing happened. I tried an mp3 and it said that there was some problem with the output, so I changed that in "preferences" to libALSA and it worked with the mp3. I then looked at the codecs, and it said it had one for WMA. So I tried the wma file again and the program disappeared again (i.e., I think it crashed). Just to let you know, the WMA files was 12MB big and probably around an hour long. But the program should still be able to handle it, right?

It's only illegal (in certain countries) if redistributed in binary form. It's 100% legal to redistribute a WMA decoder in source code form, and for individuals to compile this for their own use.ttuuxxx wrote:By default wma isn't used by any VLC players on Linux, I've read about it before, its basically illegal thanks to MS propriety
MPlayer only requires an external win32 codec to decode "WindowsMediaAudio 9 Professional" audio files. The specific dll involved is wma9dmod.dll.ttuuxxx wrote:Mplayer with the extra plugin pack plays wma also
But most WMA files out there are "WindowsMediaAudio 9" and MPlayer can handle these just fine without win32 codecs, via its static ffmpeg library (ffwmav2).
The XMMS source code does not include a WMA plugin, it needs to be obtained separately (libwma.so). And very few (of the many) XMMS packages available on this site include this plugin. The version I contributed here includes it -ttuuxxx wrote:If its wma audio you want to play, xmms on puppy can play it, it comes with the plugin.
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=26528
This plugin is based on ffmpeg code, so it will handle WMA9, but not WMA9 Professional.
I believe that a better choice of audio player under Puppy 4.x's GTK2 libraries is Audacious.
Dougal's Audacious package here -
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=20942
includes WMA support. I don't know if this support includes WMA9 Professional.
Hmm strange....I thought of DRM but that usually only affects format conversion...I can play movies with wma soundtracks in vlc .. I avoid the format for music.
I do come across wmv files that give 'unrecognized format' in vlc but open in avidemux......format listed as wmv3 / wma so it seems that not all wmv/wma is the same just like not all doc files are the same so perhaps the problem lies with whatever software created the file(s).
just my 5 cents worth (=6.5 pence at last reckoning)

must be using a low bitrate...shouldn't be a problem but could be.WMA files was 12MB big and probably around an hour long

small disaster
Hi guys,
I am very thankful for your help. But I'll tell you what happened.
1) I tried out audacious to see if it would work on my other computer (still Puppy, but Pup 4.1). Although it attempted to install, it gave a long list of dependencies that were not available, and it never knew where to find them. So, of course, when I clicked on "Audacious" nothing happened.
2) Mplayer was a bigger problem. I installed it in the same computer. It seemed to install more fully than Audacious since it never complained once about lacking dependencies. But when I clicked on it, two blank windows appeared, one black and one white. Then ALL of Puppy froze. The mouse could move, but clicking on anything made no difference. I don't know Puppy has a variant of Windows "ctrl+alt+delete", but that never worked. So I rebooted. And I tried Mplayer again. Again, those two windows appeared and everything froze apart from the mouse. Again, I knew of no keyboard shortcuts that could help, so I rebooted, planning to uninstall it. But then, at the very beginning of Puppy's booting, when it comes to loading kernel modules (normally the word "usb" would follow and everything else would flow to the end), problems occurred and Puppy would even load to its windows. I tried again, but it still wouldn't boot to the end. I tried again and waited, and it said that it had failed and I was to try xorgwizard and then type in xwin, which I did, and it still failed. The words I remember seeing where "stale NFS handle" there was a word there I forgot. But it wouldn't budge. So I did a clean boot into RAM and deleted the old pup_save file and the other one, I think it's the basic sfs and 2fs files.
So Mplayer ran me totally off the road.
I know you won't take offence at me writing that, since you know no offence was meant. But I have no idea what happened, and I'll have to do a frugal install of Puppy again. Maybe I should upgrade to Puppy 4.12, although I haven't met any differences between Puppy 4.1 and 4.12 that would make me change.
I also tried BMP, but it too crashed to nothingness like its xmms predecessor.
If I cannot get a wma file to play, then is there any ANY way at all for me to convert, or to get a codec for ffmpeg to convert it to a useable format? If I could get a converter or a robust enough player, then I could possibly be prepared for future wma files.

found a way
Just by accident, I found the means to play the wma files I have. I had originally just tried each individual media player in Puppy Package Manager. That means I would try one, and then it wouldn't work, so I uninstall it and try another. But for some reason I tried putting them all on my system at the same time. I found that Xine worked with the wma files. So I uninstalled all the others, and left xine on its own. But when I tried to play wma again, it failed. So I tried installing the mplayer_full_codec one that was still in Puppy Package Manager. And it appears that xine uses the same codecs as mplayer.
So to conclude, it seems like Xine with Mplayer_codecs works with wma files.
Thanks for your time and help.

correction
it appears that it's just mplayer_full_codecs is the key, not necessarily xine. With just mplayer-full-codecs installed, gxine reads the wma fine. I wonder if this means that ffmpeg now has more power.
ttuuxxx: I want your skins!!
I've had the early version (8.6engv5) that you put together, ttuuxxx, on one of my pupflux installs I've got and it works great! Nice job!
But I want your skins! I tried first to download the skins from a vlc site, I put them in the /usr/share/vlc/skins2 folder, but I can get vlc to use skins2 (I open vlc then click on settings, then skins2) ; it crashes every time.
I'm trying for the third time to download your pet of the 42 skins, but I can't get it to go...admittedly, my conection isn't the best in the world, but it is pretty good.
Is there another place to download your pet of the skins? Can I get the correct skins from some other place? Am I putting them in the wrong folder? I get a segmentation fault everytime with no further explanation...

that got it...I started vlc like regular, then changed the skin that I wanted via preferences, then restarted vlc with the settings you suggested, mikeb. That caused it to start in skins2 using the one that I had picked.
For the record, I did get ttuuxxx's skins downloaded, then ran the pet, but I don't know where it put everything. The skins I used were ones that I had put there (as far as I know, unless the pet overwrote 'em).
thanks again...

Re: ttuuxxx: I want your skins!!
I don't have vlc installed at the moment due to I'm mostly compiling applications for puppy 4.2 and need my system clean, due to other programs being compiled might use some of vlc dependencies, ok to get the skins working you need to enable the skins first in the preferences, off hand its near the GUI sections, it says enable skins. you tick that and then skins work, they will be listed where you click skins2, but don't click that, you need to click on the skin of choice in the menu once its enabled, Also the only downfall with the skins is that for some reason you can drag and drop on VLC when it has a skin, you have to open it via the menu or add some mimes with vlc as default, would also work.steve_s wrote:I've had the early version (8.6engv5) that you put together, ttuuxxx, on one of my pupflux installs I've got and it works great! Also if you install the small skin package
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... h&id=12043
If I recall right it will show you where to put the skins, and also It might actually set up VLC so it uses skins by default. Give it a shot and report back please.
