Markups added by me:
wanderer wrote:the main pieces are
1. kernal
2. ramdrive which can be used as /
3. and /user which on puppy is an sfs file
additional apps can be added as sfs files
like devx and zdrv files
to keep the core small
If so, you should read on the thread:
A vote for a modular use of Puppy Linux and keeping an eye wide opened to what is/will happen over there.
I'm currently packaging (and sorting stuff out) a full featured package-setup exactly for the use on ideas like keeping the core small, using SFS Modules, RoxApps and RunScripts to download a SFS, load a SFS and executing its application immediately. It comes with 20 applications, 5 sub-tools and currently not counted useful scripts for the use on building SFS from directories, PET files, DEB files, combinations of PET and DEB files etc..pp. plus many more.
Just for your interest...
More information later in the above named thread.

ok everyone
since we are going to build this from parts
the first thing we will need
is a decent kernel
it has to have all the basic modules in it
or in the ramdrive
to load up and find the file systems
the second thing we need
is a ramdrive
it needs everything
to run a complete command line system
e3 and a shell
i like busybox ash
it small and self contained
i'll upload one i built a few years ago
to show everyone
the third thing we need
is a basic x image
i have one with xvesa
but many monitors now need xorg also
in this image we will put
jwm xvrvt rox and emelfm
the basic apps for x
to this image we will add
dhcpd
dillo
firefox
mplayer
and whatever
we can plug things into ce1.iso
and use a lot of the standard apps it already has
but of course we can plug in newer versions
i'm starting on this now
and will keep you guys updated on my progress
look into this if you can
and post your thoughts
happy hunting

I've added a few programs from puppy package manager,
vlc,gnome-mplayer,lxterminal,guvcview, and kshisen, they all work fine
but are old versions.
I compiled some newer stuff without problems too.
This ce1x3 is working okay the way it is, seems very stable.
It will be interesting to see later versions but in the meantime this
one is the puppy that I'll use on this laptop
Thanks

fantastic Billtoo
thanks for your work
we will just play with ce1x3
until we build another
more up to date one
i'll remove ce1x1
because it needs a zdrv
and we want to keep
as much in one file as possible

there is a zdrv

maybe that will help a little

I think that's the baby file omission, which has to be added back in for some monitors.

Hi wanderer,
Hats off to you for your brave effort.
We have already a puppy based on Debian Wheezy. Please, have a look at this thread:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=80546. Pemasu, who built that puppy, had issues too, as Woof wasn't quite Debian ready and he's already done a lot of work and bug fixing there. BTW, he also happens to be the only guy who builds Debian puppies. Your personal effort deserves nothing but praise, however, for a community Woof/Debian project to succeed, it is imperative to have pemasu on board. As for 'pupdesk flag', that you've been referred to, have a look here:

No, but I noticed that Barry separated it out as an SFS to cut down the size of the iso (in the smaller package)
3. More drivers in 'zdrv'
Extra kernel modules, printer, scanner, camera drivers, and browser plugins, now moved out to the 'zdrv' SFS file. There is a special monitor, that if you try to perform any operation that requires those drivers, a message pops up telling to install the zdrv, with a button to download it.

thanks for the reminder
i am aware of pemasu's woof wheezy
and have examined it
it is of course far more advanced
than the one i made
i probably should have asked for his help
before i ran woof
but i was unfamiliar with the complexities
and just assumed woof would automatically
let you run the latest version
i'm happy i ran it though
because i found out the basics
and i will be prepared the next time i run woof
i still think it is useful to look at the iso we made
to learn about its structure
but i will contact pemasu right away
to get advice on our next build
thanks

or ask pemasu if we can just look at his iso
i will leave a request for his help
on his thread today

In my opinion any puppy that uses the pupdesk flag is straying into in dangerous territory. It should be avoided at all costs in a distro that seeks to be useful to newcomers.

Hi wanderer,
first up a great first up effort and I encourage you to keep up the good work.
Machine AMD Sempron 3000+ 1Gig ram Compaq Presario SR1300AN
Boots up nicely into desktop. Sound and Video working.
I can confirm that pets don't install and .debs do and from package manager.
Noticed Pmusic doesn't play mp3. Installed Aqualung + Deps and it did.
Installed Gxine from debs in PPM installed and video mp4 played fine icluding Fullscreen.
Again Wanderer keep the faith as Micko would say.
