There are a couple of known issues if you want to install Puppy to a USB media.
Unetbootin
Unetbootin can install to USB media direct from the Puppy ISO file. It copies isolinux.cfg from the ISO file to USB media and renames it to syslinux.cfg. However, you need to manually edit syslinux.cfg, change "pmedia=cd" to "pmedia=usbflash" (if Flash media) or "pmedia=usbhd" (if USB hard drive).
ext4
Most builds of Puppy, including Wary, are using syslinux version 3.x, which does not support ext4, as shinobar has reported:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=63350
So, for now do not place an ext4 filesystem on your USB media. I do plan to upgrade syslinux in Wary after the 5.0-final release.
Lucid Puppy 5.2 Official Release JAN 5 2011
For reference. These comments are from Barry's blog today.
Thank goodness for redundancy. Seriously, one of the design goals was to have alternate ways to get things done.Using Retrovol to get sound working, sound is muted again every reboot. However, used Alsa Wizard on the fourth reboot and sound is now persistent. On two reboots anyway.
The main box is an Athlon 2400 as I recall? I ask because on my Thinkpad P3 900MHz (very slow cd drive also) sound is muted about half the time when I boot fresh, and it works the other half--so I am thinking it is a speed issue.

The driver is working but there is no 'Setup / NVIDIA X Server Settings' item
in the Menu and we can't configure.
Edit:
added to .jwmrc to test the settings: all is working fine.
The Menu, which earlier "had the jitters" is now still with Preferred Mode = Maximum Performance (item PowerMizer)

Haven't got a look at 517 yet so I don't know what the default wall is, will do tonight.playdayz wrote:tubeguy, catdude, ???
Was it one of you who made the background that is default on Lupu-517? Any chance of adding a 5.2? Thanks.
Edit: It is an honor to mentioned in the same context as catdude.

IceWM errors on switching
IceWM from the PPM is still set to default to the Beach Sunrise backdrop image, which has been removed. If you use WM Switcher to switch to IceWM without choosing to keep the background constant, or picking one from the dropdown menus, IceWM gives a file not found message and displays a blank background. Any chance of including Beach Sunrise in the Pet? I found it very atmospheric.

Can some people give tasmod's's Psync 1.6 a workout please?

Can people also test shinobar's firstrun-1.5. Since it has a new startup routine we will probably not include it in the iso, due to insufficient time to test (and 1.4 has been working so well), but we will place it in PPM for those who might need it.

Universal Installer optical drive annoyance
Zhaan, my K6 machine, has two optical drives - a Hitachi GD-5000 DVD-ROM drive which is Secondary Master and sr0 in Puppy, and a Sony CRX100E CD-RW drive which is Secondary Slave and sr1 in Puppy. The DVD drive is configured in BIOS as the first boot device and is the drive I boot the LiveCD from.
When using the Universal Installer without first mounting the DVD drive, it asks for the CD to be moved to sr1 for reading the files. If I ignore this and continue the Installer sulks and demands to be pointed at the location of the files. It should automatically check both drives.

Booted Lupu 517 LiveCD on Zhaan (K6 2 500) with pfix=ram, did usual initial setup. Installed Xorg-High and the e2fsprogs.pet you posted. Frugal install of Lupu 517 to the ext3 partion and ran Grub4Dos Config. Shutdown -> Power off and created a new pupsave, saving it as a 512MB ext2 into the directory where I installed the 517 frugal. Said no to copy lupu-517.sfs and powered off once it had displayed "System Halted" and powered down the hard drive.
Power on, selected Lupu 517 frugal from Grub4Dos menu and waited while it booted cleanly into the Frugal of Lupu 517 without any problems. Shutdown -> Power Off and switch off when halted. Powered on again and it once again managed to boot up into a working Frugal of Lupu 517.
Looks like you've sorted it. Thanks for your help!

Updated full installation of lupu-516 on an ext4 partition to lupu-517. Updated a frugal installation of lupu-516 on an ext4 partition to lupu-517. New frugal installation on an ext3 and an ext4 partition of lupu-517. Added Trinity KDE to the ext3 installation.
All of the above work fine and to date no problems discovered.
Kudos,
Jim

On Merlin, the Pentium D machine, did a LiveCD boot of Lupu 517. Upgraded lupusave file I'd initially created in Lupu 515 and had previously upgraded and used with Lupu 516. No problems noticed other than there's still a short delay with the speaker icon showing muted before that clears and shows the normal state. Does sound initialisation wait for the wireless network connection to be established?
