How to have wireless working after reboot (puppy 2.12)
I'll put the following in Bold because some users seem to get confused fequently:
Rutilt DOES NOT save parameters for next boot
When I mention the Network wizard I mean the network wizard that is under the "Setup" menu.
Previous versions of Puppy also had two other entries "WAG" and a "Wireless wizard". Both have been preempted by the Network wizard
WAG: Does not save parameters for next boot. I took most of keenerd's WAG code and integrated with the network wizard.
Wireless wizard: It was a very old workaround to explain users how to go about wireless before the Network wizard included wireless.

Wow .. did some more testing and there you go .. it worked!
I think I always would load the ipw2200 driver and never click the save button. Then of course the iwconfig settings would never stick on reboot because the ipw2200 was not loading on boot, hence nothing to save the iwconfig settings to!
So I read the directions a little more clearly this time and clicked 'Save' after loading the driver. And all is perfect

Not a question to me that RutilT doesn't save the Wireless settings, point is that it seems that many of us end up going that route simply as a known way of getting a connection, when it doesn't happen auto from boot.
I think this occurs after messing up with the network wizard. I can certainly describe one way that I messed up the wiz & took me awhile to figure out how to fix it it.
If I saved the same parameters, or profile twice, this would result in the wiz crashing when I even clicked on that profile to load. The reason I clicked on save was with the intent of saving for an auto load wifi boot. If not done correctly this can result in 2 profiles with the same name & parameters that results in the net wiz crashing when just clicking on that profile.
Had to figure out how to delete the duplicate, to even load the original profile to even use the net wiz.
Keep in mind also that in attempting to use the net wiz, I've also messed with autoconnect & template; not really knowing what I was doing, but trying & saving many combinations in an attempt to connect (at the
beginning..anyway)..
Since I've figured out how to use the wiz..a bit, over time, i've had less probs with a connection, but to this point don't have any of my setups going direct to a wifi connection on boot.
No big deal though, quite happy to be able to connect..one way or another. I started with Puppy very recently & still know practically nothing about linux.

I don't remember having seen a report for this bad behaviour before. I will investigate.jonyo wrote:If I saved the same parameters, or profile twice, this would result in the wiz crashing when I even clicked on that profile to load.
Can you write the steps to recreate the crash. Step by step:
For example:
1. Open the wizard
2. Select the interface
3. Click on the wireless button
4. etc...

Let me explain what I have done so far and still have my wireless not starting up automatically:
click on ¨connect icon¨
click on ¨Connect to Internet by network interface¨
click on Load driver
choose ipw2200 from the list then OK
message:
The driver is already loaded
That does not mean it will actually work through!
After clicking OK¸ back on the main window if you see a new active interface
proceed to configure it.
click on OK
I see my wireless interface ¨eth1¨
click on it
click on Wireless
click on ¨MyNet¨ that has my wireless configuration
click on ¨Use This Profile¨
message ¨testing interface 1¨ ...
click on ¨Auto DHCP¨ and wait for a while
message: There may be a delay of up to 60 seconds while Puppy waits for the DHCP server to respond. Please wait patiently...
click on Back
click on Save
click on Exit
reboot the machine...
My wireless does not start
I have to start it clicking on Menu -> RutilT Wireless access gadget -> Profiles At this tab¸ I can see ¨My Net¨ profile¸ so I just click on it and choose ¨Apply¨. When I go to the first tab ¨Link status¨ I can see all my wireless data and it is working properly.
Maybe I am not doing the right thing.
Thanks again

kkpity .. you are doing the exact same thing as I had been doing for a year !!
There is a secret 'SAVE' button that pops up after you load ipw2200. Make sure you find that one first !!
No point saving wireless settings for your next boot unless you have the driver installed.
Did you read my previous post?

Have you installed the latest rc.network?
Does that mean that when you select your parameters it does not create the following files?
/etc/eth1mode
/etc/eth1wireless
If those files are not there, then you are right, it is not saving the parameters.
That was very "matter of fact".kkpity wrote:I already clicked on Save button, but I'm not able to get my configuration saved

I highly doubt that you have to uninstall the driver.kkpity wrote:Maybe I have to uninstall the driver, re-install again and click on Save button

Just did it on this lap. I have a saved profile called jon. In the wiz, if I manually enter another profile with the same name (jon) & save it, I end up with 2 boxes & profiles named jon. Once this is done, if I click on either one..wiz disappears. Auto-connect still works, or loads..ended up deleting the template one.

This is why I value testers. It would've never ocurred to me to create two profiles with the same name.jonyo wrote:I manually enter another profile with the same name (jon) & save it...
It does not matter if I think that it is absolutelly silly and conterintuitive to create two profiles with the same name, the fact is that even if done by mistake it causes an error.
When I fix it, it will be fixed by overwriting the other profile with the same name so, still scratching my head why would someone purposelly try to create two profiles with the same name.

I have no dirs like /etc/eth1mode and /etc/eth1wireless
The wizard tool created dir /etc/ethernetmodules.
I think I'm using an old version.
Anyway¸ I tried to use net-setup-2.15-1.pet (http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=99397) but I think my system does not support this extension. I'm using puppy 2.13
I prefer not to upgrade puppy. So... Is there a pretty new version (.pup) that I can use?
Is there a way to check what version I'm really using?
Thanks

Hello all,
This thread seems to have dropped off. I think there are still some of us with the original problem. I have done three installs in a month, at two different location (i.e.two different WIFI modems). I have yet to have the configuration load on boot, yes I click save both times. During boot the system scans for DHCP for 60 seconds. I always need to re-run the wizard after Puppy starts.
Anyone with any additional thoughts on this issue?
