Wary 0.3 (030) feedback
Thank you, Barry!
Wary-030 was very easy to install to an old laptop (AMD 1700 MHz, 512 MB). After that, it was somewhat unprecedented to see the mplayer to play a variety of video and music formats (flv, wmv, etc.) without any fine tuning. Adjusting the volume, however, is laborious. Every reboot resets Retrovol, and you have to find the correct settings once again.
Regards, X

It's worse than that - it doesn't seem to detect any nV card nor on-board nV chips, ancient and modern, lcd or crt.Wary 0.3 cannot detect my graphics card properly. It's an old nvidia gforce mx4000.
Finally got sight of it on an old(?) A1500+ with a discrete ATI 128Pro. Not a lot of help having all those useful notes with a blank screen!
This is a mission-critical omission which, presumably will be fixed quickly in a v 0.3.1 or w.h.y.
Would be very helpful to trim a lot of fat, too, if this is aimed at 'older' kit. 50M .iso was set as a max for credit card CDs, but there's another limit around ~80M(?)( for 8cm CDs which I think are more common in Asia(?). They are also readily available in Europe but grossly over-priced.
Hello musher0
The following procedure works for me (i have done it several times)
Manual frugal install booting with pfix=ram.
so i installed the NVIDIA-173.14.25-k2.6.27.47.pet that i had compiled, and everything squared up nicely.
If you succeed in getting the nv driver to work
you might want to try the NVIDIA-96.43.16-k2.6.27.47.pet that i posted here: NVIDIA Drivers for kernel 2.6.27.47 (wary-030)
the package also includes glxgears

I also had issues getting my card recognised (FX5200)musher0 wrote:Hm...

No luck at all bringing up the familiar Puppy desktop screen, even if I choose the vesa driver.
Strange...
The following procedure works for me (i have done it several times)
Manual frugal install booting with pfix=ram.
- Selected UK and clicked OK
Selected en_GB and clicked OK
Selected Europe/London and clicked OK
Chose the default Local and hit Enter
Selected Probe > 1680x1050x24 > Test > TEST_X_NOW
that failed (showing an 'Out Of Range' message) so i did Ctrl+Alt+Backspace
Selected Tweak > nv > OK > 1680x1050x24 > Test > TEST_X_NOW
This worked, so i once again did Ctrl+Alt+Backspace
Selected Finished and arrived at the desktop.

I tried Wary 0.3.0 on three PCs, with mixed results:
1) An old desktop with a Celeron 633 and 512Mb RAM. Kernel panic after 'Loading initrd.gz' and before 'Loading drivers needed to access disk drives'. This PC works fine with Quirky Retro 1.2 (I'm using it now), and mostly OK with Quirky 1.2 and Wary 0.2.0 (neither shuts down completely). Ethernet connection, I haven't tried the analog modem for years.
2) An old laptop, an IBM Thinkpad 1200 with a Celeron 500 and 192Mb RAM. This is the target system, as far as I'm concerned. The built-in analog modem was not detected (Wary 0.2.0 sees it as an Intel 82440MX AC'97 and loads kernel module Intel ICH Modem). The wireless card was not detected (Wary 0.2.0 sees it as a RaLink RT2561/RT61 rev B 802.11g and loads kernel module rt61pci). The boot sequence produces an error after i8042-probe which reads '/sbin/pup_event_backend_modprobe: abnormal exit' which does not cause a failure of booting up. Shutdown stalls after printing the message 'Wary is shutting down'. On first boot (no save file yet) pressing Crtl-Alt-Del gets me another 'Wary is shutting down message', followed by the Save-To-File dialogue. Later boots (once the save file exists) don't respond at all.
3) A 2-year-old laptop, Acer Aspire 5315, everything works fine. In fact, all recent versions of Puppy work, as do Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Debian, LinuxPCOS, Slax - everything I've tried. Dare I say Vista too? This must be very much vanilla hardware: Pentium 560 @2.13GHz, 2Gb RAM, Atheros AR242x 802.11abg (kernel module ath5k), Intel 82801H (ICH8 family) HD Audio (kernel module HDA Intel). No analog modem.

@catdude.
I have wary 0.3 running now.
The only differences with your instructions were that I clicked on "choose" and then typed "nvidia".
That triggered the VESA driver and I was able to get to the desktop. From there I installed your NVIDIA-96.43.16-k2.6.27.47.pet.
I re-initialized X-ORG, pushed the display a bit to the right using the appropriate monitor buttons, and everything was fine.
Many thanks for your help.

There seems to be a problem with wary's default ROX 2.9 showing iconized windows. I get none after selecting the appropriate options.
I got the same results with my compilation of ROX 2.10, which displays iconized windows correctly in all workspaces in ToutouLinux and MyWolfe 0.8. (But not if you tick "individual" workspaces.)
Back to Wary 0.3, I suppose the problem lies half with ROX and half with Wary? Maybe some libs are missing? In any case, it's not a terribly big problem, since the iconized window are shown in the jwm bar, but still, it would be nice to have them show on the screen.

Here's what I did to wary 0.3 until now, poor thing!
First, the credits:
The mostly black background is cropped from an older picture by Joss-Linn Gagné. I couldn't retrace the original URL, but you'll find lots more of her photographs here: http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=%22joss ... n%C3%A9%22
I added conky from conky-1.7.1.1pet, at http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... t=lastpost
Second, the how-to:
The jwm panel was made to disappear, and I added a ROX panel at the bottom. There, I put the right hand side icons to free some space for the conky panel, and Puppy's "office suite" line of icons (the 2nd line of icons at the top left). I think that this sort of maintains the desktop occupation ratio.
To make the jwm bar appear, I bring the cursor to the bottom of the screen. It shows on top of the ROX bar. To make it disappear and see the ROX panel again, right-click on any free space on the desktop... twice!

Just my two cents worth of desktop design ideas!
BFN.

PS. 1) Original size of picture is 1280x1024.
PS 2) I put this as conky.sh in the Startup dir. (Don't forget to make it executable.)

Sony PCG-TR2AP, no HD, 1gb RAM, Intel graphics, 915 resolution issue.....
Bless you, Barry.....! I have been having issues getting video to work right with Lucid Pup. Booted Wary 0.3 from CD, selected 'choose' -> Intel driver and everything worked right out of the box. The sfs files I used with 431 are detected and load at boot.
My complements to the Chef.....!

That thread is over 6 months old. Are there updates of which you are aware?musher0 wrote: I added conky from conky-1.7.1.1pet, at http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... t=lastpost
Also, did you try the thermal code and some of the other code e.g. the news headlines? Kinda cool the way one guy tucked that all in together.

Wary 0.3.0 on Athlon900+FIC-VIA board
This is a full install on an EXT4 partition. It also has a 256MB swap. Wary recognizes and works all the hardware, S3-Trio 64MB video, on-board VIA sound (not even a need to configure ALSA), ADMtek NC100 ethernet, Agere-Lucent analog modem (no final test as I have no dialup provider), USB, a couple of oddball optical drives. Hotmail seems to use a lot of processor time, especially while loading ad material. I plan to test printing and scanning tonight.

Ok, that was on the 10th, today is the 14th, no reboot and it's still running fine! I've found the happy kernel for this box , just need to get sound..01micko wrote: No kernel except for the really retro ones have been happy on this machine. Usually they run fine but if the machine is left idle for a couple of hours I come back to a blank screen lock-up. (have tried with different video cards, this one, an old Riva and and an S3 pci card). The old 2.6.18 kernels seem to work well with this box. We'll see how this one goes.
Cheers and thanks for Wary.

I posted earlier that my internal wifi worked with Wary 0.3 but i was wrong!, i had my usb dongle plugged in .
So to put matters right i delved into why it did not work on this and other woof builds and i found the answer.
Two .pets are needed that seem to be missing from woof builds, they are wireless-tools-29.pet
pcmciautils-014-3.pet
After install and a reboot the internal wifi is recognised and connects.
Now to get the sd card slot working .

Bug in CUPS
Scanning works fine with a Canon LIDE scanner. These are the most trouble-free units I've run into.
There is a bug in CUPS. When you first open CUPS (from the menu or the desktop "setup" icon) it asks you if you want to add a printer. If you click "yes" it tries to open two web pages simultaneously and Seamonkey won't do it. It returns an error message stating that Seamonkey is already running and not responding, then it opens the help page in /usr/share/doc, and never gets to the CUPS web interface. As a workaround, read /usr/share/doc/cups_shell.htm (or print it on another machine if you have one), and tell the opening dialog box "no". Seamonkey goes directly to the web interface, click the "administration" tab and "add printer". No brain strain unless it's late Sunday night and you're thinking about work tomorrow.
If that's the worst thing that happens with this distro I'll take it!

Problem for Atheros Fast Ethernet Network Driver @ Asus eeeP
The Intel Internal Graphic Card on my eeePC 900 was be recognized & setupped fine.
Other problem under eeePC 900.
1. Ethernet atl2 module find not and Net fall (Ethernet by Atheros Fast Ethernet Network Driver). Existing atl1 module fail after load attempt... But the WiFi module ath5k (Support for 5xxx series of Atheros 802.11 wireless LAN cards) loaded and worked fine.
2. Battery capacity under eeePC 900 recognized as 1% (but I have 100% of it!) -- analogically the module who uses on Lupu 5x! See screenshot for detail.
UPD ...and I find problem for displaying icons tumbnails by ROX folders... See 2th screenshot please.
(I remember now, analogically problem has a Puppy distro like upup-47x, if it's not my dejavu...)

GO: Toshiba Tecra 8000; NO GO: VMware
GO: I waited for this wary for a long time. Now, my 256MB Toshiba Tecra 8000 is happy with 030. Once configured, Wifi autoconnects after reboot. I forced to load the required sound modules at boot time, thus sound is OK, too. Video streams are played fast. Skype, Zoiper, Opera, Chromium, Firefox (Minefield 3.7a6pre) are all OK. Thanks, Barry.
My only concern is that pwidgets does not run, but I am sure there will be a pet available for Wary soon.
NO GO: It is strange that Wary versions do not run under VMware. None of them. I could not succeed with tweaking xorg.conf.
All Quirkies are compatible with VMware, however (including pwidgets - note that I use only the Weather widget).
