I reinstalled VLC using a .pet from a different post in this thread and it installed and works (although it did give me an error message at the end of the install).

I also have no success accessing the site I listed above with VLC so maybe the server is down.

Thanks for your help!

I tried it again tonight and the site is working. Interestingly, the morse code plays equally well in VLC and the gxine plugin.

Thanks again, everybody!

It needs a password.................................................................. Did it occur to no one that if it requires a password, maybe we might then need that password? To download it? Hmm? Grrrrrr

I installed the pet and the default pet from the first post but still have gxine trying to stream in firefox. I selected 'default player' in the the firefox applications rather than gxine but still no joy. Is there a mozilla/firefox plugin somewhere in the install that I can drag to the firefox plugins folder?
Or something more obvious that I haven't done maybe.
Thanks
Much much better than gxine by the way at .mov files. Smooth and good audio. Haven't tried anything else yet.

OK just found this:-

http://linuxappfinder.com/package/mozilla-plugin-vlc

Should I install one of these and if so which one?

Thanks

I doubt the VLC pet comes with the plugin, as a) it's a bit crap and b) most people wouldn't use it.

However, I wouldn't bother downloading a plugin since the plugin needs to be recognised by the main player and it won't unless both the player and the plugin have been configured to work together.

What's wrong with the Xine player? Does it not stream? You can copy a URL and paste it into VLC to play a stream, but if you desperately need a VLC player in Firefox that isn't much help :P

well, nothings actually wrong with it as a streaming player but it doesn't perform so well with video on my hd. A bit choppy and has sound issues with some files. .mov in particular. Thats why I tried vlc as my mainplayer and as it works so well I thought it would be nice to use it for streaming. But if the plugin is so iffy I won't bother! :D

You would probably need to play with file associations in the firefox download preferences......also if there is a gxine plugin in present that would override...check 'about:plugins' .
I basically set vlc to open every time when the download dialog pops up...works for most.
Otherwise addons like mediaplayerconnectiviity are helpful......whatever the method the result is playing in the standalone player as embedding is not a common option with vlc (works better standalone anyway)

This VLC package by far is better than gxine, If you read the whole VLC thread it uses less resources, searches dvd faster, It has more features etc. I wouldn't listen to sikpuppy responses, He is way off.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/446 you can use for streaming on Firefox.

I was talking about the plugin that ships with a complete build of VLC. It's crap. I was also talking about the possibility of just downloading the plugin from the internet, which probably wouldn't work. I was not talking about the performance of VLC as a standalone player (and I think the poster got that).

The Firefox addon above is way better that Gxines plugin, it lets you select which player for what format, So VLC can be used for video streams, and if a codeC is missing for a particular format then you can specify Mplayer or Gxine to play it and also you can have your audio being played by Bmp/xmms etc.

Erm, so does that Mozilla plugin use the VLC Mozilla plugin...or does it embed the player itself? Because if it does, that's fine, but I was actually talking about the VLC plugin (i.e. --enable-mozilla-plugin or whatever) which I feel, in my humble opinion, is crap.

Gxine's is better than the plugin that ships with VLC, it may not be as good as the one you linked to. I would not know about that :P

That addon posted above controls the players you select, It doesn't use any other plugins, like the default gxine or vlc, its a complete replacement.

ttuuxxx is the winner!
I did try playing with settings as mikeb suggested but only achieved a "plugin required" message in the space where my video should have been (it was .wmv btw.) Clicking on that took me to WMP 11 download page surprise surprise which was extremely useful.

Ttuuxxx you seem to know something about this plugin, does it also act as some kind of video downlloader like flashget or unplugged?

Hi diaeresis

I'm not sure about that, Its been sometime since I've used that plugin, butttttttttttt you can use flashgot with multiget to download files, That is usually the best combo, because multiget can download mutithreads connections, Like 8X the speed, Its harder on the servers, but many people do it anyways.
You can find multiget in the software section of the forum.

Nah you are all off track.... :D
Assosciation changes work for direct links not embedded content (think shoutcast)
The vlc plugin is only useful for pages written to use the vlc pluging...hardly any exist....it does NOT work for stuff like embedded content for WMP.

To pick out the links of embedded content you either right click go into page info, media tab and find the embed link and use that to play.(or download :) )...or.... get something like media player connectivity which does it automatically...look link...
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/446

gxine plugin is ONLY for gxine.

Mozplugger is made for mplayer but 'could' be modded for vlc...bit messy

Me iz the webtv king :D ..if its playable i will play it.
