How big is the partition /mnt/sdb1? You need to run the dd command somewhere with enough space to hold the image file.

/mnt/sdb1 is 16 gigabytes .... 533 does not fail with the same sized drive.

Rupp pointed oout that DD writes everything, including white space to the iso....so, with a 16 gig USB drive, you would run out of memory.

To test it, I used a 4 gig USB drive and things worked fine.

It's working well, there is a new nvidia driver out, also vlc 2.0.4 is
out.

When I add .desktop files for wine applications, the jwm menu entry for the app is not generated correctly. For example:

The command to execute the app is:

env WINEPREFIX= "/root/.wine" wine "c:\\PROG~FBU\\Bloobs\\Bloobs.exe"

When the jwm menu in regenerated, the following is created:

env WINEPREFIX= "/root/.wine" wine "c:PROG-FBUBloobsBloobs.exe"

The three sets of double back slashes in .desktop file should have been
converted to single back slashes in the jwm menu.

I assume this is a problem with fixmenus. This worked in slacko 5.3.3.

Berta boot manager recognizes sfs files created by dir2fs if made in Beta2

So much that is so good.

I installed the version with FF and 3.2.31.4 kernel. It booted to nv. This is an excellent solution as explained in the release notes. nv is very slow on my Athlon 2GHz, 2GB RAM. Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 machine - glxgears registers 36 fps, but I have a usable desktop.

I was also able to use my save file from slacko 5.3.3.2. X would not start initially because the nvidia driver was compiled with the 3.2.22 kernel, but I was able to gracefully revert to nv.

The nvidia 71.86.15 driver, which delivers spectacular performance with my system, would not compile, but the newest 173.14.35 (recommended) driver installed easily and registered ca. 3000 fps on glxgears.

FF worked with Flash, but was unacceptably slow. My stand alone Opera 12.02 was up to speed.

The major problem arose with VirtualBox. I was able to update the kernel, but attempts to start the un-operating system (Windows XP - as you may have guessed) hung. I tried a number of variants - installation with new save file, update to the newest version of VirtualBox 4.2.22 with the same negative result.

For me, this is a show stopper, because I need VBox for WordPerfect. A more general concern would be problems posed by continually updating the kernel. Applications that are compiled against the kernel need to be recompiled - a minor annoyance when it works, a major problem when it doesn't. I am also concerned that, at some point, our friends in the open-source and the commercial (e.g., nvidia, oracle) communities will throw in the towel and simply tell us: "When you have figured out where you want the goal posts, we will figure out how to kick a goal."

Perhaps a practical solution would be to offer a "safe kernel" and an experimental kernel. In any case, I will try out the 3.4.14 kernel and report back.

I haven't time to go back and make a "safe" kernel just for virtual-box. I have reports that it is failing. I believe it's an Oracle bug. But they probably don't care as it probably works ok on Oracle-Linux which, being a server os would ship with an older kernel, like Red Hat etc. Eventually they will fix it.

I will be bumping kernel versions once more. That is why I haven't compiled any drivers as yet.

I have 3.3.6.5 running OK on a Toshiba Satellite laptop. 3.3.6.0 ran fine on my ol' HP Mini, but 5.3.6.5 does not show LibreOffice. I re-downloaded the .sfs file, but loading and unloading the sfs has no apparent effect. No menu items, nothing in /opt.

The devx sfs is loaded. And everything else I have tried seems to be working as expected. I can mount the libre office sfs via ROX and look at the files. But they do not show up in the file system.

As for PAE, don't listen to the siren voices, mick. My guess is that the 99% of the planet still using the devil's OS probably have XP, (or even W98?) running on A700-A2200+ and PIII- P4(478) judging by the junk gifts still being offered and requests for F.I.A.T. (fix-it-again-tony for those not living in the USA). These are the target audience for Linux conversion. The cash-rich few can fix their own kit!

Glad that there is a PAE version...would be a real shame not to have one and penalize folks who have newer equipment.

Consider it a bonus if there is one. That was not the point I was making. No law against PAE - be my guest. Regulars like you are probably entirely capable of transcribing one for yourself without skewing the field or creating the wrong impression about Mr&Mrs Average.

Well.. we have both .. pae and non-pae so that we avoid these discussions . It's actually very little trouble maintaining both. Less than I thought anyway. And as far as bumping vers goes, I'm following LTS with both so it makes sense to bump .

As for virtualbox, I think it's an aufs (layered fs) bug. I'm about to try it in the full now. Compiled successfully but crashes every time in a frugal.

Tried the 3.4.14 kernel with PAE today. PAE was not a problem for my old friend: AMD Athlon 2 GHz, 2GB RAM. This is not always the case. The PAE version of Precise did not function well at all on this machine.

This version boots into nouveau (with the expected blank menus). A judicious application of nouveau_unload with save file and reboot solved the desktop problem. Vesa was loaded, but ran very slowly: glxgears 37 fps.

Upgrade to nvidia 71.86.15 failed. Upgrade to 173.14.35 succeeded with glxgears ca. 3000.

Opera (including flash player) worked out of the box. This is the latest release version 12.02, which I have been using for several weeks as a stand alone. There is one small problem that is definitely not a Slacko problem, but could use some attention if Opera is to be used as the default browser. Opera refuses to play ogg audio and video files from the Wikipedia per mouse click. I am working on this, but haven't found a solution yet. If anyone else knows how to do it, don't wait for me.

VirtualBox was a total disaster - both the latest 4.2.2 and 4.1.18 which performs flawlessly with the 3.2.22 kernel in Slacko 5.3.3.2. micko, thanks for pursuing this. It would be a relief to know that it ain't the kernel.

I like this old laptop, which is not proving capable of running Precise as things stand. A few years from now, I doubt it will matter though, since this machine, and ones like it, will probably have fallen apart by then... but not yet.

In the 4g FF version...

The exec line in mozilla-firefox.desktop of:

firefox %u

means that Firefox always gives an error message (www.%u.com not found) when run from the menu.

If run from the desktop icon it works fine because that has a different exec command in defaultbrowser

Removing the %u stops the problem.
