If any one wants to try I'll post the file. It's at /etc/rc.d/rc.update. Plonk the attached file into /etc/rc.d after decompressing. rebuild your main sfs and your away, can do a sane full install. There's no cheating unless you mount the full install, plonk in the file, chroot into the full install, then run depmod...OR wait a week or so for beta 3  .
Downloaded your fix -
Booted to original live cd non PAE version
Copied fix to /etc/rc.d/
Remastered
Booted new live cd
Full Install to ext4 partition

Works like a charm.

I am in my early 80's. Playing with puppies occupies a lot of my time and helps keep me active and alert.

Thank you for your time and talent. Your contributions to puppyland are much appreciated.

Billtoo,

Wondering why you are getting such a high memory use reading in Htop?
On initial boot I usually see a figure of around 50-70 MB for memory usage.
I see you have a system up time of 3 days.
I wonder if programs are staying loaded in memory after shutting down and the memory is not being returned for use.
Maybe a problem?

Without knowing anything about what's just been running, what programs are installed, what sfs are loaded or anything else, any comment is pure speculation.

I think I found the answer in "How Puppy Works".
Actually, a technical detail here. "Flush" is not quite the right word. Ideally, I would have liked to do that, save everything down to the persistent storage layer, then the top layer would be empty thus giving you a completely empty ramdisk. However, when I tried to do that, unionfs crashed. So, the compromise is that the contents of the top layer is copied down to the next layer -- that is officially supported by unionfs.
it does mean however, that the ramdisk never gets really flushed, so if you download lots of stuff, or install a big package, you can fill it up. To get around this problem, Puppy has a background program (a daemon) that will warn if RAM space is getting low. Perchance you do run low on RAM, the cure is simple: reboot.
So I guess a reboot every now and then is needed on low ram systems.

To narrow things down, can you try to load the libreoffice sfs from the bootmanager please?

Menu>System>Schedule>Bootmanager
Interesting. LibreOffice 3.6 now shows up.

I did the initial add from the boot manager. I had grown the save file and installed LibreOffice by copy from the mounted sfs.

To test, I renamed /opt/libreoffice3.6, re-added the sfs load via the boot manager, rebooted, and found /opt/libreoffice3.6 .

I dunno. Perhaps the boot manager only works on Mondays?

Thanks much,
-Mike

Probably an intermittent aufs bug, the most annoying ones as they are difficult to track down.

If it occurs again then we will need some logs so we can make a bug report to the aufs developer. I'm sure he'd want to know about it. Running dmesg will probably show what went wrong and /tmp/xerrs.log will often show failures of userspace programs.

No-pae full install results:

The msi netbook did not need the rc.d fix.

Created a cd remaster with the fix for the Pent. M
laptops.

On first boot and full install they still booted to a frozen
desktop.

Tried my usual all-purpose full install fix:
boot the cd again and rerun the full install choosing
"upgrade" instead of "wipe".
After reboot I could tell it was going to work because the
"load modules pcmcia" long count had disappeared.

Success.

A few quirks about the 3.xx kernel Puppies.

1."hard-info- sensors" doesn't give any temperature
readings.
I use cpu-temp pet to keep track of temps.

2. Htop with 2.xx kernels showed load averages below
1 while watching youtube videos.
Htop with 3.xx kernels shows load average of up to 3
under same conditions.
The temps and cpu use are the same with either kernel?

01micko wrote:get_libreoffice now supports installing on a USB stick if you have large RAM. tlchost, this may interest you. It builds a sane 3.6.2 sfs.
Yep....found another USB drive and it does work...but the drive needs to have a linux partition.

Noticed that after a reboot when the sfs is loaded in, the default applications changer does not see libreoffice, nor the firefox sfs I made.

Filesystem on the stick does not come into play. It builds in RAM if you have enough, else aborts. You need to run

Code: Select all

/pinstall.sh
That will make libreoffice default for writer, calc, draw and impress (but the mime for impress fails, I'll get to that), Then it shows in default changer.

Thanks

If anyone needs LibreOffice-3.6.2_en-US.sfs it's http://puppylinux.bugs3.com/ here.

Use at your own risk.

no-pae on msi netbook:

Was forced to delete the Slacko full install partition
after finding it was interfering with the adjacent Lucid
partition.

Lucid had lost the ability to shut down or reboot and to find
or make wireless connections.
Lucid working fine again after Slacko removed.

5.4 beta2 seems to be working nicely on this old Toshiba A200 laptop. Live CD with 3fs save file on my data partition. Some of the earlier versions gave me trubble, but this one is good so far.

After 5.3.3 broke down for me some months ago I reverted to lupo, trying some of the slacko and precise alphas/trial versions from time to time. This one seems good. Nice and snappy compared to lupo.

Slacko beta2 k3.2.31 [opera, NO PAE]
Manual frugal install to USB flash drive. (Formatted ext3)
Save to partition on USB flash drive.
Not saving to file but entire partition.

Having several problems with this method of saving.

After rebooting using save.

1. At shutdown stops at screen showing:

login: root (automatic login)
login: root login on tty1
#

2. Click on save icon on desktop
below message pops up and that is it.
No save action performed and message stays.
waited 20 min. way past normal time for save to work.

Again this is using option to save to partition not a file.
Precise Puppy seems to be having simular issues if the info helps.

Just trying to get streaming radio (http://iiradio.iinet.net.au:8051) to work in Audacious. It worked in lupo - maybe I'll look to see what worked there.
